DOI: <https://doi.org/10.5565/rev/ analisi.3424> Abstract Yes, Minister is a series that has been part of the collective imagination of citizens in many English-speaking countries since the 1980s, in which disinformation is frequently used or mentioned by its main characters. Its enormous impact has been long-lasting, and in recent years it has gained special prominence on YouTube. The objectives of this paper are the following: a) to quantify the presence of fragments of the series Yes, Minister on YouTube, including their titles, the episodes to which they belong, their duration and the number of views and comments; and b) to analyse the processes, strategies and mechanisms of disinfor- mation in these fragments. To this end, we first described the fragments with more than 200,000 views, of which there were forty. After this analysis, we chose the videos with more than 400,000 views and, in those, analysed the processes, strategies and mechanisms of dis- information. There were twenty-two such documents and they contained as many as 125 samples of disinformation: mostly associated with the process of concealment, followed by blurring and, thirdly, invention. -

The Many Faces of the University
The many faces of the university Wonkhe and Shakespeare Martineau The many faces of the university 1 Over the last year, Shakespeare Martineau and Wonkhe have held discussions about the changing roles universities play in relation to their students, from educator to employment consultant, policeman to parent. We decided this was something worth reflecting on further and the result is this collection of essays, produced by authors from across the higher education sector. The collection explores the forces within and around universities that necessitate change, and, importantly, how the sector should respond to the challenges and opportunities presented by them. 2 The many faces of the university WONKHE and Shakespeare Martineau Foreword Universities have many roles, and they play them simultaneously in a complex and interwoven existence with students, academics, communities and each other. This essay collection, produced by Wonkhe and Shakespeare Martineau, untangles strands from this web of connections to help understand better how these roles manifest. This has been an enjoyable project, and one which has challenged our authors – all Contents from the world of UK higher education - to think in different ways about the changing roles that universities play today. The House met at half-past Eleven o’clock Jane Ellison: The challenge of being serious about prevention is one for the entire health and social care PRAYERS system. We acknowledge that, like many parts of government, public health grants have had to absorb some of the fiscal challenge. We are dealing with the [MR SPEAKER in the Chair] problems we inherited at the beginning of the coalition Government. Despite that, local authorities will receive £16 billion in public health grants alone over the spending review period, but that is not the only way we invest in Oral Answers to Questions prevention. Yes, Prime Minister
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Department of English 2017/2018 Ana Peran A Pragmatic Analysis of Humor Mechanisms in Yes, Prime Minister Master’s Thesis Advisor: Marina Grubišić, PhD May 2018 Abstract The TV series Yes, Prime Minister1 is a well known British sitcom that has been present on British television as well as TV stations abroad for decades, and is familiar to the Croatian audience as well. Although the show deals with politics, it is still very relatable to audiences worldwide. Its particular and recognizable humor and memorable characters make it easier for the audience to connect with the show. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the humor mechanisms in the show - and there is indeed a great number of ways in which it amuses the audience, whether through puns, riddles, sarcasm, doublespeak or any other way of playing with language. The analysis of the dialogues will serve to showcase how the three main characters play with the language in a clever and often confusing manner. Grice’s Cooperative Principle with the accompanying maxims, as well as conversational implicatures will be introduced in order to conduct a pragmatic analysis that will show how, although demonstrating frequent violations of these maxims, these violations do not take away from the humorous effect of the lines in the show. The humorous effect is achieved mainly by using various humor mechanisms which only serve to emphasize the quality of the dialogues and the fundamental principle of cooperation among participants in spoken exchange -

The Young(-Ish) Have Spoken. What Now? – Oxpol

Benito Müller / July 6, 2017 / 384 7 S H A R E S When Teresa May announced her snap election last April, she not only ruined my Roman holiday, but also made me cringe about having written a blog in the immediate aftermath of the Brexit referendum in which I had encouraged just that, namely: “Go with Dignity – Call a Snap Election!” Why? By then I had accepted the prevailing wisdom that the Conservatives would win a landslide victory, providing them with a three-gure majority in the Commons. This would have given her the popular mandate to push through Brexit in the ‘hardest’ possible form, thus nullifying any chance for a second ‘in-out’ referendum on the outcome of the Article 50 negotiations, which I had by then advocated in “The Will of the People: A Primer in Direct Democracy.” The ‘youth-quake’ The main fallout of last July’s referendum for me personally was that it managed to create yet another division – on top of the geographic and socio-economic divides – by pitting the younger generation against their elders. An article in The Independent asked the pertinent question: “Young people – if you’re so upset by the outcome of the EU referendum, then why didn’t you get out and vote?” Indeed, my worry was that without the opportunity to seek redress, the younger generation would be further alienated from politics, at serious cost for all of us. -
A Viable Israel and a Secure Palestine: Textual Intervention in a British Public Debate *

The example is taken from a discussion on the BBC’s Question Time programme during the Israeli attack on Gaza around the start of 2009. It attempts to show that the perspective of the speakers in this data is firmly Israeli. That is, regardless of explicit opinions of right and wrongs, of where the blame is laid and what should be done - crudely, of which ‘side’ a speaker professes to be on - it is to Israel (and not Palestine) that British contributors to the debate presume moral proximity. This alignment entails ‘natural’ rights (and responsibilities) for the Israelis but rights which can only be ‘granted’ to Palestinians (who are absolved from responsibilities). It is also argued that this alignment - which is described as a discursive deictic centre - is to be regretted. A viable Israel and a secure Palestine: Textual intervention in a British public debate * 1 Introduction In one episode of the BBC satirical comedy, Yes, Prime Minister , Sir Geoffrey Hastings, the Head of MI5, the British Secret Service, informs the Prime Minister, Jim Hacker, that a recently deceased former Head of the Service has left papers indicating that during the fifties and sixties he was passing secrets to the Russians.
