Four species are omitted as they need to be described in the context of a revision (three Cheilosia and a Palpada species) and three other species (one Neoascia and two Xylota) will be described by F. Christian Thompson in a planned publication. Six of the new species have been recognised for decades and were treated by J. Richard Vockeroth in unpublished notes or by Thompson in his unpublished but widely distributed "A conspectus of the flower flies (Diptera: Syrphidae) of the Nearctic Region". Five of the 11 species were discovered during the preparation of the Field Guide. Eight of the 11 have DNA barcodes available that support the morphology. HOVERFLY NUMBER 29 NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2000 ISSN 1358-5029 On the first page of Hoverfly Newsletter No. 17 (November 1993) I wrote of the dilemma recorders are faced with in situations where a very common species and a rarity are sufficiently similar that they cannot easily be distinguished without capture (and in some cases without killing the insect). Do we capture innumerable specimens of ubiquitous species, when by not doing so we might risk missing a rarity? A related problem occurs when advances in knowledge show that a taxon that has been regarded as a single species can be split into more than one, particularly if the original taxon was common. The discovery a few years ago that what we knew as Platycheirus peltatus and Platycheirus clypeatus in fact included other species is an example. No doubt all readers are familiar with the methods of identifying the three species of Syrphus hitherto recognised as British; although all three are common, Syrphus is not the most straightforward of genera to identify to species, but at least the female of S. ribesii with its almost totally yellow hind femora is readily distinguishable in the field. I am sure I am not alone in having sent in numerous S. ribesii records based on females examined alive in the field, but not caught. In Dipterists Digest Vol. 6 No.2 (1999) Martin Speight has drawn our attention to the likely occurrence of another species, Syrphus rectus, in Britain. He reports that the female of this species is not distinguishable from that of S. ribesii using the keys for the genus that are current in the UK, and that while the females can be separated on the basis of wing microtrichia, the males of S. -

Ferro Living trees are all alike, every decaying tree decays in its own way. —with apologies to Tolstoy Abstract The final decay stage of wood, termed veteris wood, is a dynamic habitat that harbors high biodiversity and numerous species of conservation concern and is vital for keystone and economically important species. Veteris wood is characterized by chemical and structural degradation, including absence of bark, oval bole shape, and invasion by roots, and includes red rot, mudguts, and sufficiently decayed wood in living trees and veteran trees. Veteris wood may represent up to 50% of the volume of woody debris in forests and can persist from decades to centuries. Economically important and keystone species such as the black bear [Ursus americanus (Pallas)] and pileated woodpecker [Dryocopus pileatus (L.)] are directly impacted by veteris wood. Nearly every order of insect contains members dependent on veteris wood, including species of conservation concern such as Lucanus cervus (L) (Lucanidae) and Osmoderma eremita (Scopoli) (Scarabaeidae). Due to the extreme time needed for formation, veteris wood may be of particular conservation concern. Veteris wood is ideal for research because invertebrates within it can be collected immediately after sampling. Imaging techniques such as Lidar, photogram- metry, and sound tomography allow for modeling the interior and exterior aspects of woody debris, including veteran trees, and, if coupled with faunal surveys, would make veteris wood and veteran trees some of the best understood keystone habitats. Highland Biodiversity Action Plan 2010
HIGHLAND BAP March 2010 Foreword Facal-toisich This Biodiversity Action Plan has been drawn up by Highland Council on behalf of the Highland Biodiversity Partnership. The Partnership is made up of representatives of around 30 local groups and organisations committed to understanding, safeguarding, restoring and celebrating biodiversity within Highland. Our purpose is to provide guidance and support to the existing network of Local Biodiversity Groups, and to make progress on the key strategic biodiversity issues in the Highlands. It is this last point that we hope to address through this Plan. The Plan lists the key issues that have been brought to our attention since the Partnership started in 2005, and proposes a range of future actions or projects that we’d like to undertake in the next three years. We have made progress on nine of the ten strategic issues that were identified in the 2006 Highland BAP. This Plan proposes 24 new projects, each with simple, measurable targets and an identifiable lead partner. It is perhaps fitting that this Plan is being launched in 2010, the International Year of Biodiversity and understandably, a desire to raise awareness building on all the good work undertaken to date features strongly in it. We are of course bound by limits on the budget and resources that our partners can muster in these difficult times, but nonetheless we are confident that we can achieve a lot by working together and planning ahead.
