The Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema
The Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema Ekky Imanjaya Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies December 2016 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract Classic Indonesian exploitation films (originally produced, distributed, and exhibited in the New Order’s Indonesia from 1979 to 1995) are commonly negligible in both national and transnational cinema contexts, in the discourses of film criticism, journalism, and studies. Nonetheless, in the 2000s, there has been a global interest in re-circulating and consuming this kind of films. The films are internationally considered as “cult movies” and celebrated by global fans. This thesis will focus on the cultural traffic of the films, from late 1970s to early 2010s, from Indonesia to other countries. By analyzing the global flows of the films I will argue that despite the marginal status of the films, classic Indonesian exploitation films become the center of a taste battle among a variety of interest groups and agencies. The process will include challenging the official history of Indonesian cinema by investigating the framework of cultural traffic as well as politics of taste, and highlighting the significance of exploitation and B-films, paving the way into some findings that recommend accommodating the movies in serious discourses on cinema, nationally and globally. -
Ghost-Movies in Southeast Asia and Beyond. Narratives, Cultural
DORISEA-Workshop Ghost-Movies in Southeast Asia and beyond. Narratives, cultural contexts, audiences October 3-6, 2012 University of Goettingen, Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology Convenor: Peter J. Braeunlein Abstracts Post-war Thai Cinema and the Supernatural: Style and Reception Context Mary Ainslie (Kuala Lumpur) Film studies of the last decade can be characterised by escalating scholarly interest in the diverse film forms of Far East Asian nations. In particular, such focus often turns to the ways in which the horror film can provide a culturally specific picture of a nation that offers insight into the internal conflicts and traumas faced by its citizens. Considering such research, the proposed paper will explore the lower-class ‘16mm era’ film form of 1950s and 60s Thailand, a series of mass-produced live-dubbed films that drew heavily upon the supernatural animist belief systems that organised Thai rural village life and deployed a film style appropriate to this context. Through textual analysis combined with anthropological and historical research, this essay will explore the ways in which films such as Mae-Nak-Prakanong (1959 dir. Rangsir Tasanapayak), Nguu-Phii (1966 dir. Rat Saet-Thaa-Phak-Dee), Phii-Saht-Sen-Haa (1969 dir. Pan-Kam) and Nang-Prai-Taa-Nii (1967 dir. Nakarin) deploy such discourses in relation to a dramatic wider context of social upheaval and the changes enacted upon rural lower-class viewers during this era, much of which was specifically connected to the post-war influx of American culture into Thailand. Finally it will indicate that the influence of this lower-class film style is still evident in the contemporary New Thai industry, illustrating that even in this global era of multiplex blockbusters such audiences and their beliefs and practices are still prominent and remain relevant within Thai society. -

'Sundelbolong' As a Mode of Femininity
chapter 4 ‘Sundelbolong’ as a Mode of Femininity Analysis of Popular Ghost Movies in Indonesia Maren Wilger Introduction: Hantu Sundelbolong Indonesian folklore is populated by various kind of ghosts or hantu.1 While they used to haunt the living through ghost stories (cerita hantu), in contempo- rary culture they are presented in multifaceted ways on the silver screen to tell modern ghost stories, and part of the discourse of modernization.2 In this chapter, I start with a short description of the nature of ‘Sundel- bolong’, one of the many vengeful female spirits in Indonesian lore, before providing a brief introduction to the political and cinematic background of 1 Hantu: ‘Spirit’, ‘specter’ (Heuken, 2009: 181). In general terms, ‘hantu’ contains more than the European/Western understanding of ‘spirit’ or the German ‘Geist’. The term hantu is also used to describe possession by demons and presents good and evil supernatural beings. It appears to be insufficient to use Western classifications, such as ‘undead’, ‘spirit’ or ‘vam- pire’ for Southeast Asian beings, since the categories of hantu are much more fluid than the Western ones. While an undead entity in the Western hemisphere is statically characterized as being completely apart from the living—as being dead—, cerita hantu contain the idea that those beings can be tamed and transformed back into a living and human form again. Indeed, hantu Sundelbolong can be transformed back into a human when a knife is driven through her neck. It seems like hantu have greater physical potency and effect the living more than Western spirits, the undead or vampires do. -

The Translation of Indonesia Myth Characters on the English Wikipedia
THE TRANSLATION OF INDONESIA MYTH CHARACTERS ON THE ENGLISH WIKIPEDIA Marisa Puteri Sekar Ayu Santosa Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia [email protected] ABSTRACT The English language Wikipedia is in both terms of the number of articles and amount of content, the largest encyclopedia ever written. Since it has an enormous amount of information and ease of access through the internet, Wikipedia is often used as the first destination for the general public when they wish to find specific information or learn about particular topic. One of the biggest issues in Wikipedia is making information available in almost all languages. English Wikipedia is often using another language as the source language for translation activities aimed to enhance the quality of the multilingual Wikipedia, one of the examples is Indonesian. In this research, the researcher was interested in observing Indonesian myth characters on the English Wikipedia by investigating the kind of translation techniques that English-Wikipedia used and the way of Wikipedia translated the cultural terms. This research used comparative descriptive method which compares the source text (Indonesia Wikipedia) and the target text (English Wikipedia). The Indonesian myths characters that the researcher wanted to analyze were: Sundel Bolong, Pocong, Jenglot, Wewe Gombel, Kuntilanak, Tuyul, Nyai Roro Kidul, and Babi Ngepet by using translation techniques from Molina and Albir (2002. The result of the study, it could be shown that there were 9 types of translation techniques which are used, they were: amplification (addition), borrowing, compensation, discursive creation, established equivalence, literal translation, modulation, reduction (omission), and transposition. Moreover, the translated text was more informative than the source text, since it was impossible to literally translating the cultural terms. -

Hantu Pontianak Daripada Pendekatan Agama Dan Sosiobudaya Di Indonesia
Kata kunci: Hantu; pontianak; agama; sosiobudaya; Indonesia ABSTRACT Beliefs in supernatural beings such as ghosts and demons have long existed in societies around the world, except the Indonesian community. Every tribe in Indonesia has a belief in ghosts and demons according to their local culture and religion. -

The Politics of Religion in Sisworo Gautama Putra's and Joko Anwar's
DOI: 10.9744/kata.21.1.24-32 ISSN 1411-2639 (Print), ISSN 2302-6294 (Online) OPEN ACCESS http://kata.petra.ac.id The Politics of Religion in Sisworo Gautama Putra’s and Joko Anwar’s Pengabdi Setan Anton Sutandio Maranatha Christian University, INDONESIA e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT This research compares two films, the original Pengabdi Setan and its remake, in the context of politics of religion to show how the two films depict the issue of religion at two different eras based on the released years of the two films. The display of religion in the two films is viewed as an allegorical representation as well as critical responses to the socio-political situation of the two eras. Separated by almost four decades, Joko Anwar‟s nostalgic remake and the original film subtly converse with each other, share distinctive similarities yet also polarized differences that underlie their endeavor to allegorically bring back and relive public memory of certain national trauma; that is repression during the New Order regime and marginalization of the minority in contemporary Indonesia. By focusing on the films‟ cinematography and mise-en- scene, this research attempts to locate those allegorical moments within the depiction of religious practice that challenge, criticize or accentuate the dominant ideology of their respective eras. Keywords: Allegorical moment; religion; national trauma; politicization. INTRODUCTION films, he can achieve his mission to introduce Indonesia mystical culture. Suzanna, the Indonesian “On its first day of release, 91.070 people have met horror icon, partly achieved her status through Putra‟s mother,” Joko Anwar wrote in his instagram on 29 films such as Sundel Bolong, Nyi Blorong, Telaga September 2017. -
BAB II TINJAUAN PUSTAKA 2.1 Film Sebagai Komunikasi Massa
BAB II TINJAUAN PUSTAKA 2.1 Film Sebagai Komunikasi Massa Komunikasi Massa berasal dari pengembangan kata Media of Mass Communication (media komunikasi massa). Lewat saluran mana? Kepada siapa? Apa efeknya?.
