Very much in the style of classic RTS games such as Dune 2, KKND and Command & Conquer, this is an enjoyable little game which doesn't score many points for being original, but does get a few for simply being well done. It's got a wide range of units, some interesting missions and solid AI, and has the ability to be played in real-time or as a turn-based strategy game, akin to Battle Isle. The basic goal of the game is to colonize planets, and this involves exploring them, taking control of their resources and of course, blowing up anyone who tries to take them away. You have a wide range of units, air, land and sea, to make use of in your endeavors, which can be upgraded to improve their abilities, and which give the game some very interesting tactical possibilities. You also have eight different factions to choose from, each with their own detailed backstories, and which offer even more variety, and you can play through an extensive campaign or make up your own custom missions. MAX is actually one of the better RTS games out there, but one which has probably passed a lot of gamers by. This may be due to its rather unappealing visuals, which are pretty bland and lacking in detail, but if you look harder, you'll find a deep, complex and very rewarding experience. This is one game which really requires some serious tactical thought if you're going to win, with the range of units and factions adding in even more. If you add in the clear and intuitive interface you have a fine bit of old-school strategy fun. Good real time strategy game. It is a real time strategy game which has a unique touch to it in terms of ordering the units and in terms of managing the base. The weaknesses and the abilities of the units are quite diverse and add great depth to the gameplay. All the players in the game can have the same buildings and the units but they have their differing stats due to the difference in the clan. Depending on the preferences, you can build units, defense turrets, spy units, water or land and so on. The ability to upgrade and customize the buildings and the units has also been incorporated in the game and these features really make the gameplay move to a whole new level. So in terms of strategy and the gameplay, the game has a very broad spectrum. Now if we consider the graphics, the variety of the color combination coupled with some very good animation and textures make it a very attractive game. The AI has been made very competitive to give you a tough time and to make the game interesting even if you play it alone. Overall the game has a good variety of some great elements like seen in Reunion. Download Space M+A+X. Manage the build-up and operation of a space station in this management/business simulation. Space MAX is one of the more interesting games of this genre, which flooded the German market in the late 80's and early 90's-- and one of the best of its kind. A quality game into the last detail, and after all it's much more fun to manage a NASA space-station instead of a wineyard as seen in Winzer . Not as strategy-oriented as Interplay's Buzz Aldrin's Race into Space , as the emphasis here is on simulation. Overall, probably one of the best space station simulations ever made-- much better than Accolade's Apollo 18 and more realistic than Karl Buiter's classic Earth Orbit Stations , althought arguably not as playable. Review By HOTUD. Captures and Snapshots. Comments and reviews. AEN 2018-09-23 3 points. One of the best, or maybe the best game on MS-DOS! Write a comment. We may have multiple downloads for few games when different versions are available. Also, we try to upload manuals and extra documentations when possible. If the manual is missing and you own the original manual, please contact us! M.A.X. 2 Download (1998 Strategy Game) M.A.X. 2 offered little that was new at the time of its release. It is a standard collect the resources, build the units, send them after the enemy affair. It is a well-designed and fun game, but compared to other games such as Total Annihilation and Starcraft, it has a stale flavor. Most of the unit types are fairly standard for real-time strategy games, there are a few alien units that have different abilities, but for the most part, the alien units are made different by coloring them green and giving them different names. There are some innovations, like spycams which allow you to monitor certain map locations or units. The main thing that sets this game apart from other real-time strategy games is the ability to pause the game and still issue orders to units, or even to play completely turn-based. Turn-based play is somewhat slow and dull compared to real-time mode and does not offer the strategic options of other turn-based games. Real-time mode makes for a much faster game, and with the ability to pause the game and still build units and. The unit artwork is particularly ugly and distinguishing the different unit types can be difficult. The option to have unit names printed above units goes some way to negating this, but the screen can start to look cluttered. The multiplayer support is good, and victory conditions can be customized, allowing for things like capture the flag. A simple to use scenario editor is included, but unfortunately it does not allow the player to build their own maps. M.A.X. 2 suffers from a general blandness. There are no cut-scenes between missions and there is no real storyline, you are essentially just told to go out there and destroy the enemy. It is a game worth checking out if you are a real fan of the genre, but there are better games available. Graphics: Unit artwork is poor. Sound: Nothing special. Enjoyment: Fun if you like real-time strategy games, but lacks innovation. Replay Value: Scenario editor allows players to create their own missions. M.A.X.2 is the latest in real-time and turn-based strategy games. An interesting mix between the Final Fantasy series and the Command & Conquer series, M.A.X.2 provides the best of both combat models, dynamic unit morale, and an impressive catalog of units. I read the manual that came with M.A.X.2 very carefully and was not able to find a coherent story, but rather tidbits of a story that are mentioned whenever appropriate. The book provided enough information for the player to know that there is a federation of alien races called Concord, humans are attempting to become Concord members by merging their DNA with the DNA of Concord races, and there is an enemy race called the Sheevat. M.A.X.2 uses the standard, easy to use, InstallShield system, and does not require the player to configure it for individual systems. M.A.X.2 includes some minor improvements over features of other games in its genre. M.A.X.2 provides the player with a "SpyCam" for booking locations on the main map and displaying them in a secondary window at variable levels of zoom. M.A.X.2's artificial intelligence engine is well designed and comparable to Blizzard Entertainment's StarCraft. The graphics in M.A.X.2 are just under the borderline of its genre averages. The effect graphics (explosions, building construction, etc.) in StarCraft (released in 1997) far surpass M.A.X.2's claim. The terrain graphics in M.A.X.2 are fairly comparable to those in StarCraft and the Command & Conquer series by Westwood Studios, however.

Beyond WarCraft in Space by Bert Shen Science, Technology, and Society 145 March 15, 2003 The Firebat prodded the bones with his flamethrower. “It ain’t one of us. Don’t look like no Zerg scum either. Protoss don’t have giant nostrils like this thing. What the heck is it, Jim?” Raynor took a closer look. “I’ve read about this ancient species. It’s an Orc.” “Don’t look like no pork to me, Lieutenant.” Raynor continued, “They’re extinct now, but they were eerily similar to us, almost like our forefathers. Long time ago, this place was called Azeroth and it was filled with elves, dwarves, trolls, and ogres. The Orcs tried to exterminate the humans, just like the Zerg are trying to do to us now.” “So they’re just like the Zerg? Just as ugly I bet.” “Their melees were similar,” continued Raynor, “but on a much smaller scale compared to ours. I’ve studied some of their battles, and the victor was always the one who could amass the most units and storm the other side’s base. Time after time, the side with the strongest ground forces won. It was formulaic, no strategy.” “Not like our battles,” interrupted a Marine. “We’ve got to balance our attacks and send in the right types of units. They didn’t have to deal with cloaking, burrowing, or the air combat we’ve got to deal with either.” “That’s right,” said the Lieutenant, “We’ve got to deal with a greater number of units at a time and we’re faster, smoother, and more coordinated than they once were.” “Still sounds all the same to me,” said the Firebat.

! i For my father, who didn’t let getting blown up slow him down. ii "#$ I would like to thank all the people who made this thesis possible. There are simply too many to name them all here. However there are a number of people who deserve special mention. Without these individuals’ support and advice I would have never reached this point. Firstly, I’d like to thank my supervisors. Over the course of my candidature I have been guided by three supervisors: Chris Chesher, Gay Hawkins and Ross Harley. This thesis is unmistakably a product of the unique talents of all three. With the crucial formative help of Chris, the astute theoretical insights of Gay, and the encouragement and motivation of Ross, I have had an amazing team supporting me over the years. This thesis would also not have been possible without the incredible support of my family. I am very fortunate to have a family with so much knowledge and experience for me to draw on. From considerable conceptual advice to countless hours of proofreading, this has been a family effort. I also want to make special mention of all those people who took the visual load off me with this thesis. Researching and writing a PhD is undoubtedly a difficult task for anyone who attempts it, but with my visual impairment it would have been near impossible if it was not for all the help and support I received. Whenever my vision failed me I knew I had somewhere to turn. From the anonymous volunteer who recorded Discipline and Punish to tape for me, to my army of proofreaders, every single person who stepped up when I was struggling was instrumental in my being able to complete this thesis.

  • Ideologies of the Neo-Oriental in World of Warcraft
RENDERING THE OTHER: IDEOLOGIES OF THE NEO-ORIENTAL IN WORLD OF WARCRAFT James C. Vlisides A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2013 Committee: Radhika Gajjala, Chair Robert Sloane © 2013 James C Vlisides All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Considering video games as sites of semiotic play, I argue that video games are a commodity that inscribes the consumer into various subject positions that often participate in the replication of ideology in simulated spaces. Applying Louis Althusser, Edward Said, and many other pertinent scholars, I consider World of Warcraft, the world’s largest online video game, and what our digital production and consumption of this gamic space says about our identities and place in a larger cultural ideological framework. It is with this understanding that I see ideology in video games as both an illusion that informs our understanding of the world, as well as an allusion to our very real subject positionings within the real world. Focusing first on the capitalist fairytale that is recreated in the virtual economy and gaming ludology, I briefly discuss “gold farming” and how this real world aspect of WoW bridges the Oriental ideology in both real and virtual spaces, as both spaces benefit from this process. Focusing specifically on the recent World of Warcraft expansion, Mists of Pandaria, I argue that by making Pandaria and the Pandaren race so stereotypically Asian, so bluntly Othered, and so vividly exotic merely encapsulates the idea that diversity, difference and especially the East are all now more easily consumed by a world entrenched in such a clash of ideology and clash of cultures, where all facets of identity and play have been transformed into consumable products in the virtual world as potently as they also have in the real world.
