3 Welcome

Welcome from Our Gala Co-Chairs & Executive Director

On behalf of the 1990 Institute, we are delighted to welcome you to our inaugural Symposium and 27th Annual Gala, our biggest event of the year.

We are honored to have you with us tonight as we celebrate our IGNITE Award Honorees and the Institute’s grassroots work in deepening cross-cultural understanding with students, teachers and young professionals.

This year, we broadened our programming with a Symposium that features panel discussions on topical issues across the broad landscape of modern . We believe our Gala & Symposium’s spectacular lineup with over 16 speakers, special guests and honorees will take you beyond the headlines, offer fresh insights into China's economy and consumer trends, and encourage substantive dialogue.

Our IGNITE Award honorees are individuals who have made significant contributions to furthering understanding between the U.S. and China, and to helping shape new perceptions of China, the Chinese, and Chinese culture.

Given one of our key programs is focused in increasing the teaching of modern China in school curriculums and leveraging digital media, it is fitting that we are honoring three influential, China-based media executives -- Victor Koo of Alibaba, Liz Schimel of Condé Nast China and WPP China CEO Bessie Lee -- who are not only shaping the future of their industries but also helping lead China’s economic globalization, and investing heavily in education to help nurture the development of local talent needed in China's rapidly evolving marketing and digital landscape.

We hope their personal journeys and diverse accomplishments will inspire many of you on many levels. Media, of course, holds a privileged place in social communication and can wield extensive influence on public opinion, cultural norms and values, and the popular imagination.

Our IGNITE culinary honoree, Belinda Leong, of the wildly popular b. Patisserie, has not only set a new standard in artisan, French-inspired pastries-- she’s also created a new Chinese New Year tradition of black sesame kouign amanns, among others -- Chinese-inspired seasonal creations we wait all year-round for.

Rising culinary star Kathy Fang, who grew up in the kitchen of House of Nanking, is also one to watch. She’s building upon her “Chopped Champion” titles, growing media fan-base, and continually honing her signature Cantonese-inspired multicultural cuisine at Fang Restaurant. 4 The 1990 Institute's mission is to deepen cross-cultural understanding between our two countries and to foster more U.S.-China savvy generations. Our event today brings together our community and raises the much-needed funding for our U.S.-China programs for students, teachers, women entrepreneurs, young professionals and all the other groups we reach.

2017 is a key growth year for the Institute, as we are focused on:

• Elevating our flagship education program, CHINA NOW | For Teachers, through formal educational partnerships, by seeking endorsement from the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and taking a pilot group of teachers for a 2018 study tour to China.

• Bringing in more speakers from China, like with this year’s Gala and Symposium, to enhance all of our programs – including our Speaker Series, Youth Voices on China, and Sinoscenti -- our new initiative aimed at U.S.- China Women Executives & Entrepreneurs.

• Serving more teachers, younger generations and millennials through digital platforms.

• Launching our first Teachers & Students Fund to help subsidize fees for this community to attend our events.

Our bold goal this year is to raise over $1 million in fundraising to support our growth plans.

We are grateful to both the J. T. Tai Foundation and Beatrice M.H. Young Foundations for being our supporting pillars.

As always, we thank our Executive Committee, staff and volunteers for their dedication and tireless efforts to make tonight a success. Last but certainly not least, we thank all of you and all of our supporters who helped make tonight possible.

Our work is more important NOW than ever, and we look forward to growing our vibrant and vital community with you. Enjoy the evening!

Warmest regards,

Sandra Pan Brian A. Wong Monica A. Lee Chair, Board Member, Executive Director, 1990 Institute 1990 Institute 1990 Institute Gala Co-Chair Gala Co-Chair Gala Co-Producer

34 1990 Institute Executive Director

Monica A. Lee

Executive Director, 1990 Institute

Monica Lee is a tech entrepreneur and investor who now also enjoys the role of social entrepreneur. She accepted the 1990 Institute’s Executive Director position in 2015, after joining its board in 2014 to assist board members Joan Chen, Tonia Hsieh and others launch the Youth Voices on China national video contest – the Institute’s first digital media learning initiative. Today, the Youth Voices contest has involved over 500 students across 11 states, 30 teachers and 90 different schools.

At the Institute, Monica leads the team by developing the vision, strategy and resources to make learning about modern China a key priority for current and future generations of Americans, especially students, teachers, and young professionals. Why does this personally matter? Simply, what others think about China and Chinese culture impacts all Asian Americans.

As an entrepreneur with a background in grassroots marketing, sales, business development and fundraising, Monica joined the early teams of eBay competitor CityAuction (acquired by Ticketmaster-Citysearch/IAC), and Social Finance (SoFi), a student loan refinancing venture, among other startups. SoFi received a record $1 billion in funding from SoftBank, fueling its expansion to personal loans, mortgages, wealth management and life insurance. Monica advised and invested in Perfect Coffee (acquired by Blue Bottle), whose proprietary ͞freshnesstechnologies͟ is changing the way specialty coffee is brewed and distributed.

A graduate of Harvard College and MIT’s Sloan School of Management, Monica began her career at Chemical Bank and then joined the US- Japan New Ventures arm of a Japanese telecom firm. She also did two stints at Charter Venture Capital, handling early stage investments in the Internet, data security and enterprise software sectors, including Match.com (acquired by TMCS/IAC), Widevine (Google) and Whitelight Systems (Sybase). Charter also invested in CityAuction.

Monica also serves on the board of the Harvard Asian American Alumni Alliance, where she has helped co-produce their Global Alumni Summit and launch the inaugural ELEVATE Pitch Contest. A tireless tour de force who enjoys bringing people together, Monica also founded both a 4000+ member Silicon Valley professional group and a 2000+ member surf community that gathered regularly over a variety of cultural and social events, fundraisers and networking opportunities.

35 Why Our Grassroots Work Is More Important Than Ever:

The U.S.-China relationship is the world’s most important bilateral relationship today, which is critical to global peace, stability, and economic prosperity.

Today, China has developed a sophisticated, nuanced understanding of the United States, but America’s knowledge of China, in contrast, is not on par. Our broader goal is to inspire more Americans to learn more about modern China, and address these gaps and challenges:

1. The Secondary School Curriculum Gap:

• Fewer than 0.2% of our 132,000 U.S. primary and secondary schools teach Mandarin to its 50 million students.

• Today, approximately 200,000 K- 12 students are learning Mandarin in the United States, according to US-China Strong.

• Few schools cover modern China in their social studies curriculum – that is, content after the Cultural Revolution and Mao’s 1976 death.

2. The Education Abroad Imbalance:

• 523,700 students from China studied abroad in the U.S. in 2015.

• The U.S. State Department only recently reached its goal of having 100,000 Americans studying in China over a four-year period, 2010-2015.

36 3. Misperceptions & Unfavorable Attitudes Towards China:

• According to a 2015 Pew Research survey, only 38% of Americans have a favorable view towards China.

• Per a recent Committee of 100 survey, nearly all participating Asian Americans felt that “their lives could be adversely affected if there was a serious showdown between the U.S. and China.”

4. The Global Workforce Gap:

• In today’s global business environment, there is a shortage of China-savvy talent, but there is a growing market for businesses engaging with China.
