It is against this background that this Combined Periodic Report seeks to highlight the measures adopted in the implementation of the rights enshrined in the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) since 1994, identify the progress made as well as the constraints encountered. During the period under review (1994-2018), The Republic of The Gambia has had to contend with a very checkered history in the bid to fulfill its obligation to promote and protect human rights. Admittedly, numerous challenges had to be overcome in the effective realization of the promotion and protection of these rights. The Ministry of Justice takes this opportunity to express its appreciation to the distinguished Commissioners of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights and hope that the distinguished experts will appreciate the progress made so far, the determinations being made to overcome the highlighted challenges and continue to support The Gambia’s obligation to sustain the promotion and protection of human and peoples’ rights in the overall interest of all Gambians.

Senegal and Gambia Yacht Cruise Program Dakar-Dakar DAY PLACE PROGRAM 1 Dakar (Senegal ) Late afternoon embarkation at 14:00-18:00. After dinner, we set sail southward towards the Saloum River Delta. Overnight at sea, south along the coast. This morning we reach the Sine – Saloum Delta in Senegal, an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and also an Djiffere (Senegal) - Important Birding Area, as designated by Birdlife International and natural habitat for many bird species but 2 Banjul (G ambia) also such aquatic animals as marine turtles, dolphins, West African manatees and crocodiles. Our Joal Fadiout optional excursion starts at the fishing village of Djiffere from where we reach the village of Joal Fadiouth, set on an island of clam shells that also are used in local buildings and crafts. In the afternoon, we leave Senegal and the Saloum Delta and sail south to Gambia to reach Banjul, the capital of Gambia and gateway to the 700- mile Gambia River. The morning in Banjul will give you the opportunity to take the optional 1/2 day excursions offered to Bakau Banjul: Abuko Nature with its crocodile "katchikaly", its Botanic Garden and a short Banjul Tour. Mid-afternoon, we leave Banjul 3 Reserves - Tendaba and sail upstream to Tendaba. We reach Tendaba late into the evening. (Gambia) From the ship we take motor pirogues in order to reach Tendaba, located on the South Bank in the Lower River Division, our starting point of our Tendaba morning optional excursion. It is a small fishing village of mainly Muslim faith with approximately 600 inhabitants whose main occupation is fishing.

Folorunso Department of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Ibadan, Ibadan 200284, Nigeria; [email protected] Abstract: This paper addresses the impacts of globalization on cultural heritage conservation in sub-Saharan Africa. The homogenization and commodiﬁcation of Indigenous cultures as a result of globalization and it’s impacts on the devaluation of heritage sites and cultural properties is discussed within a Nigerian context. Additionally, the ongoing global demand for African art objects continues to fuel the looting and destruction of archaeological and historical sites, negatively impacting the well- being of local communities and their relationships to their cultural heritage. Global organizations and institutions such as UNESCO, the World Bank, and other institutions have been important stakeholders in the protection of cultural heritage worldwide. This paper assesses the efﬁcacy of the policies and interventions implemented by these organizations and institutions within Africa and makes suggestions on how to advance the protection of African cultural heritage within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Despite its small size and population, it was able to establish itself as a func- tioning parliamentary democracy, a status it retained for nearly 30 years. The Gambia thus avoided the common fate of other African countries, which soon fell under authoritarian single-party rule or experienced military coups. In addi- tion, its enviable political stability, together with modest economic success, enabled it to avoid remaining under British domination or being absorbed by its larger French-speaking neighbor, Senegal. 15 Strange spaces of mediated memory The complicating influence of Roots on heritage tourism in The Gambia, West Africa Jason Grek-Martin Introduction Early in the spring of 1750, in the village of Juffure, four days up-river from the coast of The Gambia, West Africa, a man-child was born to Omoro and Binta Kinte. – Alex Haley, Roots (1979) So begins Roots: The Saga of an American Family (1976), one of the most culturally significant literary works of the 20th century. The product of 12 years of research on three continents, Roots was more than a novel. For author Alex Haley, the book was a work of “faction” ( Delmont, 2016 ), a genealogical narrative that blended documented facts with fictional details to tell the compelling story of his maternal ancestors’ multigenerational struggles with slavery and its aftermath. Much of the narrative focuses on Kunta Kinte, whose birth is recorded in the first line of Roots and whom Haley would identify by book’s end as his own great, great, great, great grandfa- ther. Haley’s opening line also irrevocably bound Africa’s smallest mainland nation to the Roots phenomenon. By devoting the book’s first 32 chapters to a detailed depiction of young Kunta Kinte’s life in Juffure, Haley ensured that Roots readers had an extended imaginative encounter with an actual village in an actual West African nation. As a result, visitors to The Gambia have long been encouraged to follow in Haley’s footsteps and visit the real Juffure in order to experience first-hand the fabled land of Roots .

It was developed under the aegis of the Republic of The Gambia and the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment ( MOTIE ). The strategy benefited from the contributions of sector stakeholders and youth associations, who played an important role in the consul- tative process. This roadmap was designed with the technical assistance of the International Trade Centre ( ITC ) within the framework the Youth Empowerment Project ( YEP ) and funded by the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa. This document reflects the ambitions of the public and private stakeholders who defined the enhancements and future orientations for the sector in view of develop- ing economic opportunities for the youth in the tourism sector.
