  • The Effect of Augmented Reality Use on Achievement, Misconception and Course Engagement*
CONTEMPORARY EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, 2018, 9(3), 297-314 https://doi.org/10.30935/cet.444119 The Effect of Augmented Reality Use on Achievement, Misconception and Course Engagement* Mustafa Sirakaya Ahi Evran University, Turkey Ebru Kilic Cakmak Gazi University, Turkey Submitted: 05.03.2018 Accepted: 12.06.2018 Published: 16.07.2018 Abstract Augmented reality is defined as a technology in which real world and virtual objects are combined with a simultaneous interaction. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of augmented reality use on students' achievement, misconception and course engagement. A (matched) quasi-experimental research design with both pretest and posttest control groups was used in the study. The sample of the study consisted of 118 seventh grade students receiving education in six different classes. The students in the experimental group took their lessons with an augmented reality learning material, while the students in the control group continued using their traditional course materials. An achievement test, a misconception test and the student course engagement questionnaire were used as data collection tools. As a result of a 7-week implementation, this study found that augmented reality technology increased the achievement level of students and eliminated their misconceptions. However, the study also found that augmented reality technology did not affect the course engagement of students. Keywords: Augmented reality; Achievement; Misconception; Course engagement; Secondary school students; Astronomy education Introduction The use of technology is recognized as an important part of education. It is recommended as a solution in enabling effective learning at schools (Seferoglu, 2009). Studies showed that the use of technology in education increases the achievement levels of students, offers a meaningful learning tool by attracting students' attention to course content, and makes the learning process active and effective (Sumadio & Rambli, 2010).

  • Turkey's Population Dynamıcs As a Candidate Country for EU
International Journal of Economics and Financial Issues Vol. 1, No. 4, 2011, pp.180-198 ISSN: 2146-4138 www.econjournals.com Turkey’s Population Dynamıcs As A Candidate Country For EU Membership* Harun Uçak Nigde University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Nigde/Turkey. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT: Literally, it has been accepted that one of the major obstacles to Turkey’s EU membership is in population term. There has not been any enlargement process as large as Turkey’s population as a single state in EU history before. The enlargement in 2004 which includes 10 states involved 74 million people as whole member states while Turkey’s population is 72 million inhabitants in 2007 data which is only lower than Germany’s population in all EU member states. Thus, Turkey's accession would be different from previous enlargements because of the combined impact of high population. This study compares the population dynamics, working conditions, minimum wage rates and main macroeconomic indicators between Turkey and EU member states. Turkey has young generations compared to EU countries. In the comparison of age groups proportion in total population, 0-19 age group %21,9 in EU 27 and %36,5 in Turkey, 20-39 age group is %28 in EU 27 and %34,3 in Turkey, 40-59 age group is %27,9 in EU and %20,9 in Turkey, 60 and above age group is %22,1 in EU and %9,5 in Turkey. Thus, population dynamics of Turkey could make a contribution to offsetting the ageing of EU 27 societies if the membership would occur in the future.

FACTIONS AND FAVORITES AT THE COURTS OF SULTAN AHMED I (r. 1603-17) AND HIS IMMEDIATE PREDECESSORS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Günhan Börekçi Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Professor Jane Hathaway, Chair Professor Howard Crane Professor Stephen F. Dale Copyright by Günhan Börekçi 2010 All rights reserved ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the changing dynamics of power and patronage relations at the Ottoman sultan’s court in Istanbul between the 1570s and the 1610s. This was a crucial period that many scholars today consider the beginning of a long era of “crisis and transformation” in the dynastic, political, socio-economic, military and administrative structures of the early modern Ottoman Empire. The present study focuses on the politics of factionalism and favoritism at the higher echelons of the Ottoman ruling elite who were situated in and around Topkapı Palace, which served as both the sultan’s royal residence and the seat of his imperial government. It is an effort to shed light on the political problems of this period through the prism of the paramount ruling figure, the sultan, by illustrating how the Ottoman rulers of this era, namely, Murad III (r. 1574-95), Mehmed III (r. 1595-1603) and Ahmed I (r. 1603-17), repositioned themselves in practical politics vis-à-vis alternative foci of power and networks of patronage, and how they projected power in the context of a factional politics that was intertwined with the exigencies of prolonged wars and incessant military rebellions.

  • The Balance of Power of Turkey in Central Asia
Could Turkey Be a Dominant Regional Power?: The Rise of Turkey as a Country of Middle-East and Europe Bülend Aydın Ertekin* Abstract According to the common idea, “the economic power determines the political power." By this general principle, when we look at the powerful states, we see that these states (countries) have, at the same time, the powerful political effect on the other actors. In this paper, some trade and economic data of Turkey are shown in order to localize its place in the World rankings. By this purpose, this paper argues the fact that Turkey which, being one of the countries belonging G-20, has tried since 1991 to play a big role in its bilateral relations in Caucasia, Central Asia and Middle East (CCAME). However, when the data of international business of Turkey and those of each one of the countries of Central Asia treated in the contents of research are studied, it is seen very clearly that the influence of Turkey in Central Asia is not very dominant or does not create a dominating effect over the economic plan in spite of the existence of the diplomatic effects, visa facilities and the visits based upon the cultural level and mutu- ally testified. Without any doubt, although nobody can deny the existence and the probability of the gradual growth of Turkey’s relations in CCAME’s countries, Turkey, whose face is turned mainly towards the occident and the large majority of trade made within the European countries, tries to be an influential actor in the determined areas.
