Bramwell 2011 Abstract Personal names are a human universal, but systems of naming vary across cultures. While a person’s name identifies them immediately with a particular cultural background, this aspect of identity is rarely researched in a systematic way. This thesis examines naming patterns as a product of the society in which they are used. Personal names have been studied within separate disciplines, but to date there has been little intersection between them. This study marries approaches from anthropology and linguistic research to provide a more comprehensive approach to name-study. Specifically, this is a cross-cultural study of the naming practices of several diverse communities in Scotland, United Kingdom.

Meredith Dreyfuss HCS 4910 Senior Capstone Project Instructor: Dr. Chase Clow Reader: Robert Bradford Name Fluidity and its Effect on Ashkenazi Genealogical Research It is commonly believed that genealogical research has become easier and more popular than ever before, and with more and more records being digitized and available over the internet, the ability to research family history can be done by anyone with an interest and a computer. Where one might have had to travel to the places that housed the records that trace family life, now many of those records are online, with the data store growing all the time. Similarly, relatively inexpensive DNA testing is bringing family background and history to the masses. However, while science and technology have revolutionized genealogical research, it can still be very difficult to research one’s family history. Specifically, for Ashkenazi Jews, those from Central and Eastern Europe, there is a history of name changes, both given and surname, which makes the search for one’s ancestors a difficult challenge.

That which we call a rose By any other word would smell as sweet. —William Shakespeare1 With all respect to Mr. Shakespeare, names matter. One‘s name is closely associated with self-identity, and serves the practical function of identification by friends, family, businesses, and the government. People generally are closely tied to their names, shown in part by the great consideration many parents give in naming their children. Names are often changed to reflect different life events or statuses— such as a marrying woman adopting the last name of her new husband. For a long time, marriage has signaled a joining of two (or more) people for the foreseeable future.

  • Sacramental Records Best Practices
Best Practices for Sacramental Record Keeping RCAB Archive Department I. Entering Records Each parish must keep a separate register for each sacrament: baptisms, confirmations, marriages, and deaths. First communion and sick calls are optional, but advisable. Records should be entered into the appropriate register, in chronological order, as soon as possible following the celebration of a sacrament. Records should be in print (not cursive), in either blue or black ink waterproof ink, and as neatly as possible. Please enter as much information as can be obtained, try not to leave any fields blank. For baptisms, please place a small “M” or “F” in parentheses in the bottom-right corner of the “Name” field to clarify the sex of each child. II. Issuing Certificates Baptisms There is a short form and a long form for baptismal certificates. Short Form Since there can be sensitive information in baptismal records (birth parents, adoption information, etc.), the short form omits fields such as parent and sponsor names, and is therefore the only form which can be provided directly to an individual who requests it. The short form should be used for the following: • For an individual requesting a copy of his/her own record to keep for themselves. • Government identification needs: o ex. To add/amend name on a birth certificate, prove a marriage for social security benefits, renew driver’s license or passport, etc. • Dual-citizenship applications. Long Form The long form certificate should only be used for official Church purposes. These should never be issued directly to an individual, but should be mailed to the pastor or administrator at the parish where it is required.

  • Basic Explanation of Polish Surname Endings RAYMOND JASTRZAB·FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2021· the POLISH NAME
Basic Explanation of Polish Surname Endings RAYMOND JASTRZAB·FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2021· THE POLISH NAME Polish names have two main elements: the imię, the first name, or given name; and the nazwisko, the last name, family name (surname). The usage of personal names in Poland is generally governed by civil law, church law, personal taste and family custom. The law requires a given name (imię) to indicate the person's gender. Almost all Polish female names end in a vowel -a, and most male names end in a consonant or a vowel other than a. There are, however, a few male names that end in a, which are very old and uncommon, such as Barnaba, Bonawentura, Boryna, Jarema, Kosma, Kuba (a diminutive of Jakub) and Saba. Maria is a female name that can be used also as a middle (second) name for males. Since the High Middle Ages, Polish-sounding surnames ending with the masculine - ski suffix (including -cki and -dzki, and the corresponding feminine suffix -ska/- https://www.facebook.com/notes/eastern-europe-genealogy-research-community/basic-explanation- of-polish-surname-endings/1090999978046463/ April 4, 2021 cka/-dzka), were associated with the nobility (Polish szlachta), which alone, in the early years, had such suffix distinctions. However, they are widely popular today. Minor regional spelling differences also exist depending on whether the surname originated in Polish, Czechor Slovak (-sky/-ský). THE Imię (given name) A child in Poland is usually given one or two names; Polish registry offices do not register more than two. Among Catholics, who form the vast majority of the population, it is customary to adopt the name of a saint as an informal, third given name at confirmation, however, this does not have any legal effect.
