His performance is very difficult to define. In many ways it's very reminiscent of Patrick McGoohan's performance in the original TV series, but if you actually study it and break it down, as I have done – endlessly – it's very much its own thing. Anything But Your Traditional StoryBy Matthew KresalWhen I first listened to The Stones Of Venice I admit I wasn't hugely impressed with it. However as I've been going back and listening to the firsts season of audio stories for the eighth Doctor from Big Finish I was surprised to discover that it was a much better story this time round. Not only that but I came to really enjoy and appreciate this classically inspired tale of Venice's final hours, a cult worshiping a dead woman, amphibious gondoliers, an ageless duke and his lost love.Paul McGann and India Fisher given nice performances as the Doctor and Charley. This was the first story they recorded together (although it's the third in proper story order) and the chemistry between them is fantastic to listen to. McGann's performance is interesting as this was his first outing as the Doctor since the 1996 TV movie and there echoes of that performance to be heard in this story (such as this Doctor's ability to pick up on the pasts of other characters almost instantly).

  • Prisoner Sayings’
‘PRISONER SAYINGS’ There are plenty of phrases heard in The Prisoner, plus others which are quite apt. Here are the ones heard or seen in episodes, plus more suggestions: Above the law (Once Upon a Time): someone who thinks the law does not apply to him or her, or a person claiming immunity from prosecution. According to Hoyle (Free For All): following the rules or established procedure. Edmond Hoyle in 1742 published a handbook on the card game Whist. His book became a metaphor for abiding by all rules. Back to square one (unused): doing something over again, as with a board game, requiring a player to return to the starting point. That's the way the ball bounces (unused): originating in the USA in the middle of the last century, meaning the unpredictability of the direction in which a ball will bounce in a game such as football. Beyond the pale (Once Upon A Time): outside the bounds of something, such as decency or accepted behaviour. Derived from the Latin palus, meaning stake, such as that which would be used in forming a fence, hence 'beyond the boundary'. Brainwashing (unused): To 'clean out' unwanted data from a person's mind, controlling their thinking and ideas. The condition is brought about either by physiological or physical torture, or perhaps disorientation and even forms of coercion. Cat got your tongue? (unused): a suggestion is that the 19th century punishment whip "cat-o'-nine-tails" would silence a victim through fear, another claim is that the domestic pet's habit of staring quietly would cause an onlooker to fall silent pondering what the cat might be thinking.

WEEK Spearhead from Space Thursday 17th October, 8pm, Seminar Room, Corpus Christi College To kick off the academic year we’re watching the first episode with the Third Doctor, in which he fights a plastic-controlling alien which will no 1 doubt be familiar to most Freshers that grew up on the new series. For a bit of context, the Doctor has been sent to and trapped on Earth by his own kind as a punishment. Newly regenerated, he is found by UNIT during a somewhat suspicious meteorite shower. Along with Liz Shaw and the Brigadier, the Doctor must work to thwart this would-be colonising alien. Quiz of Rassilon Sunday 20th October, 7pm, Sebright Arms, Coate St., London This monthly quiz, based in a London pub, is usually centred around a few particular Doctor Who episodes, which WhoSoc members marathon during the day on Sunday (or occasionally the day before too if there’s lots to cover) before travelling up to London with life-size Eccleston in tow to battle it out in the quiz against other Doctor Who fans from across the country. This time around, the stories featured will be those from Series 9 of so-called “Nu-Who” and the epic Colin Baker saga The Trial of a Time Lord, with a round specifically focussing on Peri, one of his companions. All are welcome to join us for the quiz up in London, or just pop along for the marathon (we understand that many of you freshers might have a matriculation to suffer through!).
