PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

THE The Magazine Of Genesis Sci-Fi October 2013 The Magazine Of Genesis Sci-Fi September 2013 Hello, one and all, welcome back to Genesis. First of all, I would like to thank Paul Belsey for last Chairman: month’s programme, and it was so good to see some old Paul Russell favourites not seen in a long time. This month sees the return of Matt as programme editor and quiz master. Now, Vice Chairman this month I have already seen a copy of the programme; David Offen-James unlike last month; and know it is up to Matt’s usual high standard of illustrious innovation (We’re also showing the Treasurer: original Star Trek episode Spock’s Brain - Ed). The choices Matthew Greet for the film vote are somewhat different, but what else would we expect from Matt? Events Secretary: Paul Belsey Now I am “semi” retired, and by this I mean working longer and harder than I ever did when in full time Membership employment, it was with some surprise that I looked at Secretary: my calendar and noticed it was already October! Now of Louise Stanley cause this is probably not news to you, but I thought ‘oh my goodness, where has the year gone to?’ The drawing of Honorary President: the evenings, the fact that I am now going to work in the Jeremy Bulloch dark (often returning in the dark as well) could, of course been construed as clues, but as I have often remarked Website: before I can sometimes be ‘not the sharpest tool in the www.genesis-sf.org.uk box’.

It is in many ways an eye-opener par- ticularly in its linkage of theater to other performance genres.” Ngu˜ gı˜ wa Thiong’o, University of California “Richard Schechner has defined the parameters of con- temporary performance with an originality and insight that make him indispensable to contemporary theatrical thought. For many years, both scholars and artists have been inspired by his unique and powerful perspective.” Richard Foreman “Schechner has a place in every theater history textbook for his ground-breaking work in environmental theater in the 1960s and 1970s and for his vision in helping to found the discipline of performance studies.” Rebecca Schneider “Richard Schechner is the master teacher and the master conversant on the transformative power of performance to both performer and spectator, at its deepest level. Whilst the debut of an audio-exclusive companion is now a far more regular occ- urrence than it once was, its still always a cause for tremendous excitement, particularly when the listener doesnt actually know who the new companion is going to turn out to be. Situation Vacant takes the inspired approach of presenting the listener with four aspirant assistants for the Doctor, each played by an actor or actress of the same sort of calibre as outgoing foil Sheridan Smith, and each vying for the role of companion with good sense. of humour for adventures in the Fourth and Fifth Dimensions. No time (or space) wasters please I understand that this conceit was the brainchild of Big Finish founder Jason Haigh-Ellery, who drunkenly posited the idea of doing what he called Companion Idol four different companions in four different episodes, with Big Finish subscribers voting to decide which character would stay on for the season. This impractical idea was then developed by script editor Alan Barnes and writer Eddie Robson, culminating in an exceedingly enjoyable yarn that is as much a pastiche of the typical Doctor Who companion introduction story as it is The Apprentice and reality television in general.
