Lucan’s Natural Questions: Landscape and Geography in the Bellum Civile Laura Zientek A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2014 Reading Committee: Catherine Connors, Chair Alain Gowing Stephen Hinds Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Classics © Copyright 2014 Laura Zientek University of Washington Abstract Lucan’s Natural Questions: Landscape and Geography in the Bellum Civile Laura Zientek Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Catherine Connors Department of Classics This dissertation is an analysis of the role of landscape and the natural world in Lucan’s Bellum Civile. I investigate digressions and excurses on mountains, rivers, and certain myths associated aetiologically with the land, and demonstrate how Stoic physics and cosmology – in particular the concepts of cosmic (dis)order, collapse, and conflagration – play a role in the way Lucan writes about the landscape in the context of a civil war poem. Building on previous analyses of the Bellum Civile that provide background on its literary context (Ahl, 1976), on Lucan’s poetic technique (Masters, 1992), and on landscape in Roman literature (Spencer, 2010), I approach Lucan’s depiction of the natural world by focusing on the mutual effect of humanity and landscape on each other. Thus, hardships posed by the land against characters like Caesar and Cato, gloomy and threatening atmospheres, and dangerous or unusual weather phenomena all have places in my study. I also explore how Lucan’s landscapes engage with the tropes of the locus amoenus or horridus (Schiesaro, 2006) and elements of the sublime (Day, 2013). -

Our program distinguishes itself with a combination of global scope, object-driven research, and committed interdisciplinarity. Students pursue research spanning five continents, including Asian, European, Islamic, Latin American, and North American art, as well as the relations between these and other areas traditionally treated in isolation. Object-, material-, and site-based research and teaching are often large-scale and collaborative and include annual traveling seminars, conservation classes, as well as instruction and training at the Smart Museum and Art Institute. Virgil’s Aeneid In the manner of Homer, the story proper begins in medias res, with a Trojan fleet in the eastern Mediterranean, heading in the direction of Italy after Troy has been destroyed. The fleet, led by Aeneas, is on a voyage to find a second home. It has been foretold that in Italy, he will give rise to a race both noble and courageous, a race which will become known to all nations. Juno is still wrathful, because she had not been chosen in the judgment of Paris against Aeneas's mother Venus, and because her favorite city, Carthage, will be destroyed by Aeneas' descendants. Juno proceeds to Aeolus, King of the Winds, and asks that he release the winds to stir up a storm in exchange for a bribe (Deiopea, the loveliest of all the sea nymphs, as a wife). He agrees, and the storm devastates the fleet. Neptune takes notice: although he himself is no friend of the Trojans, he is infuriated by Juno's intrusion into his domain, and stills the winds and calms the waters. The fleet takes shelter on the coast of Africa. There, Aeneas's mother, Venus, in the form of a hunting woman very similar to the goddess Diana, encourages him and tells him the history of the city. Eventually, Aeneas ventures in, and in the temple of Juno, seeks and gains the favor of Dido, Queen of Carthage, a city which has only recently been founded by refugees from Tyre and which will later become one of Rome's greatest enemies. -

G Gaia or Ge (Γαῖα, Γῆ, Latin 'Tellus', 'Terra'). Mother earth, oldest of the gods, the personification of the antiquity and fertility of the earth, from which all life emerges, and to which it returns in death. Her main mythology is from Hesiod, who views earth as a flat disk, the first formation from the primeval *Chaos. As the original mother, she gave birth from herself first to Uranus, the sky, and then, with the articulation of her surface, she brought forth hills and Pontus, the sea. In the second phase of generation, she mated with Uranos to produce the twelve *Titans, the first of which was *Oceanus, the freshwater river which then encircled her. Next were the monstrous, one-eyed *Cyclopes, and then, among the most terrible of her children, the three *Hundred- handers. But their father Uranus would not allow them to be born, and to be relieved of the agony of her travail, Gaia plotted with the youngest Titan *Cronus to overthrow his father. She provided Cronus with a sickle, and hid him within her until Uranus spread himself over her in love; the son then castrated his father, and from the drops of blood that fell on the earth were born the *Erinyes, the *Giants, and the *Meliae, nymphs of the ash-tree (who in Hesiod are connected with the origins of the human race); the severed genitals of Uranus fell in the sea, floated to Cythera in Cyprus, and from them arose *Aphrodite. The emergence of sky and sea from earth, the marriage of earth and sky and the violence involved in their separation narrate the stages in the generation and separation of the world masses in the Hesiodic cosmogony. -

The book is to be a compilation of extracts from the Greek authors, selected, so far as possible, without prejudice and translated with such honesty as a translation may have. This plan has the merit of isolating the actual thought of the Greeks in this period from all the constructions put upon it by later ages, except in so far as the choice of extracts must be governed by some scheme in the compiler's mind, which is itself determined by the limits of his knowledge and by other personal factors. In the book itself it is clearly his business to reduce the influence of these factors to the lowest point; but in the introduction it is no less his business to forewarn the reader against some of the consequences. -
