Legends of Hockey FRANÇAIS | SITE MAP Doug Anderson His only two NHL games were in the 1953 playoffs, neither in the finals, but his name is on the Stanley Cup. Anderson's first outing came March 26 and a 4-3 victory over Chicago in a semi-finals Montreal won in seven games. He had been called up by the Habs as a precautionary measure for the playoffs after an excellent year in Victoria in the WHL, but after his brief stint with the Canadiens he spent the next decade in the WHL, playing almost 700 games in that minor-pro league. Anderson began his career in his hometown, Edmonton, making it to the Memorial Cup his first year (and losing, in 1945-46) and winning the Allan Cup with the Edmonton Flyers in 1947-48. He moved to Victoria in 1951, and from there he made the big show before retreating to the WHL for the rest of his playing days. • Frank Foyston Frank Foyston Began His Professional Hockey Career with the Toronto Blueshirts of the National Hockey Association (The Precursor to the NHL) in 1911-12
Frank Foyston Frank Foyston began his professional hockey career with the Toronto Blueshirts of the National Hockey Association (the precursor to the NHL) in 1911-12. The Minesing, Ontario native played three seasons with the Blueshirts, winning the Stanley Cup in 1914. Prior to the start of the 1915-16 season he and five of his Toronto teammates jumped their contracts, heading out west to skate in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association. Foyston, along with Eddie Carpenter, Harry Holmes, Jack Walker and Cully Wilson formed the nucleus of the PCHA’s newest franchise, the Seattle Metropolitans (known locally as the “Mets”). After a 9-9 inaugural season, the Mets moved to the top of the league in 1916-17. Foyston, a forward who split his time between center and right wing, was the second leading scorer on the team with 36 goals in only 24 games, winning the league MVP award in the process. The PCHA title earned the club the right to host the Montreal Canadiens of the NHA for the 1917 Stanley Cup championship. After dropping the opening game 8-4, the Mets took the next three straight to win the best-of-five series. Foyston’s seven goals were the second most in the series behind teammate Bernie Morris, who scored an amazing 14 goals in four games. The Mets made two more trips to the Stanley Cup Finals, playing to a draw against Montreal in 1919 (the series was cancelled prior to the deciding game by local health officials due to a flu epidemic) and losing in five games to Ottawa in 1920.

  • Arena Cairn' on Oak Bay School Grounds
MEMORANDUM TO: Mayor and Council FROM: Director of Engineering Services DATE: July 14, 2015 RE: Reinstatement of 'Arena Cairn' on Oak Bay School Grounds BACKGROUND: A location across Cadboro Bay Road from Oak Bay Secondary School, on the east side of Epworth Street, was the former site of the Patrick Arena, which was destroyed by fire in 1929. The Patrick Arena was the location of the first professional hockey game played on artificial ice in Canada. It was also the scene of the Victoria Cougars' victory over the Montreal Canadiens in the 1925 Stanley Cup playoffs. In 2000, the Oak Bay Heritage Commission proposed that a cairn be erected, which would provide information about the Arena, the Patri::k family and the events which occurred at the site. Subsequently, the Greater Victoria School District and Oak Bay entered into an agreement as described in the letter dated March 26, 2001 (Attachment # 1) in regards to the erection and maintenance in the vicinity of the Cairn. To protect the Cairn during the Oak Bay Secondary School construction process, it was removed and stored for safe keeping with the intention that the cairn would be reinstated at an appropriate time. DISCUSSION: The construction of the school is well advanced and the cairn reinstatement can now occur. The location of the cairn will be very close to that described in 2001 agreement (Attachment # 1). In order to proceed with the proposed reinstatement, Council needs to authorize entering into a similar agreement with the School District to address maintenance and ownership of the cairn.
