KVHA News - Vol. 17 No. 20 – May 23, 2019 Rob Sumner and Keith Espirito will Coach KVHA’s 12U A1 Selects for 2019-2020 Season Kent Valley Ice Centre, Kent, WA., Thursday, May 23, 2019 – Harry Smith, Kent Valley’s Hockey Director, is pleased to announce that Rob Sumner and Keith Espirito will be coaching Kent Valley’s 12U A1 Selects for the 2019-2020 season. Rob Sumner is an Assistant Director of Scouting for the NHL’s Calgary Flames and has worked for Calgary since 2011. Prior to joining the Flames, Sumner coached over 1,000 games in the and served seven seasons as Head Coach with the . A former WHL defenseman, he was a Flames draft pick in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. Sumner played his minor (youth) hockey in North Vancouver beginning at age 9 through 5 years of juniors, including the National Junior “A” Championship with the of the BCHL in 86-87. He played 4 years in the WHL, 3 years with the Victoria Cougars 86-90 and 1 year with the Prince Albert Raiders 90-91. Sumner has four seasons of experience with KVHA having assisted with Learn to Play and coached the 16/17 10U Tornadoes, 17/18 10U "B" Selects and the 18/19 12U "B" Selects. When asked about his motivation for coaching, Sumner responded, “I understand where the kids are in terms of hockey skill and knowledge and enjoy trying to provide a positive environment that will take each of them to that next level in their development.” Keith Espirito has been involved with KVHA’s youth hockey programs for six seasons and has served as a Coach at the Learn to Play, 8U “B” and 10U “B” levels. He led the Kent Valley Mite Minor team to an exciting victory at the Spokane Jr. Chiefs Tournament in February 2013. During his tenure as coach at the 10U level his teams won tournaments in Montana, Winthrop, Spokane and Portland. Keith currently holds USA Hockey Level 4 coaching certification. Espirito has been an off-ice official with the Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL) for the last 10 years. Prior to that he was an off-ice official with the Houston Aeros (AHL) for 5 years. Keith began playing hockey at the age of 5 with the Spokane Youth Hockey Association. He played Mites through Midget “A” with Spokane. He also played hockey with the Huskies’ University of Washington club team while attending college. After a ten-year hiatus from playing hockey he joined a team in the Greater Seattle Hockey League. Espirito is employed by Russell Investments in Seattle conducting hedge fund due diligence.

Asked why he coaches, Espirito responded, “I coach because I love the game and want to pass on life skills I learned early on through hockey such as teamwork, sportsmanship, giving 100% and responsibility. I enjoy helping kids develop and getting them to realize their full potential.”

Seattle Thunderbirds Skills Camp Set for August 5th – 16th Hockey Camp at ShoWare Center The Seattle Thunderbirds will be hosting a Skills Camp focusing on the areas of shooting, scoring and power skating. These 3 essential parts of every players game will be honed in and developed by current and past T-Birds coaches and players. This year’s staff will be working with all age groups 1.5 hours per day, committed and motivated to teaching and improving the skills of everyone in attendance throughout the week. All sessions for the 2019 Seattle Thunderbirds Hockey Camp will take place at the accesso ShoWare Center, home of the 2017 Western Hockey League Champion Seattle Thunderbirds. Participants will utilize the Thunderbirds locker room and WHL dressing rooms throughout the camp. Registration opens February 21, 2019.
