Tese (Doutorado) – Faculdade de Ciências e Letras de Ribeirão Preto, Universidade de São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, 2013. Mesoeucrocodylia é um clado bem estabelecido, que circunscreve a maior parte da diversidade taxonômica e morfológica de Crocodyliformes. No entanto, questões amplas relacionadas à sua irradiação basal permanecem controversas. Trabalhos de cunho filogenético tem estabelecido hipóteses altamente contrastantes, em especial relacionadas à validade e inter-relações dos grupos Thalattosuchia, Sebecosuchia, Notosuchia, Peirosauridae e Trematochampsidae. Uma revisão filogenética ampla foi elaborada com o intuito de reavaliar a filogenia de Mesoeucrocodylia de maneira crítica. Para tal, baseou-se no estudo dos táxons envolvidos neste contexto, em especial os possivelmente atribuídos aos cinco subgrupos supracitados, mas também membros das outras principais linhagens de Mesoeucrocodylia, além de grupos externos imediatos ao clado. Os caracteres previamente propostos para este contexto também foram reavaliados, e novos caracteres propostos, visando abarcar a diversidade morfológica total dos diferentes táxons analisados. A matiz táxon-caráter resultante da revisão é composta por 122 táxons e 494 caracteres, que foi submetida à análise de parcimônia através do programa TNT (5000 RAS, TBR, Hold 20). O consenso estrito das 3575 árvores mais parcimoniosas resultantes (MPT) não concorda em sua totalidade com nenhuma hipótese prévia. A nova hipótese filogenética apresenta uma combinação de clados anteriormente propostos e relações pela primeira vez recuperadas. Thalattosuchia foi encontrado como o grupo de Mesoeucrocodylia mais basal, assim, grupo irmão de Metasuchia. Metasuchia, por sua vez, é formado por uma grande dicotomia com Neosuchia em um ramo e Gondwanasuchia no outro. Neosuchia é formado por Stomatosuchidae como ramo mais basal, seguido de Atoposauridae como o grupo irmão de uma politomia. Esta politomia envolve Tethysuchia, Goniopholididae, Bernissartia , e um clado congregando os Neosuchia derivados (Paralligatoridae, Susisuchus e Eusuchia). Gondwanasuchia circunscreve a maior diversidade dos táxons na presente análise sendo formado por uma politomia que envolve Doratodon , Peirosauridae + Trematochampsidae, Sebecidae + Mahajangasuchidae e Notosuchia. Assim, Sebecosuchia foi recuperado parafilético, com Baurusuchidae como um Notosuchia derivado. Adicionalmente, Sebecia, como originalmente proposto, não foi recuperado como uma hipótese mais parcimoniosa em todas as árvores, porém, encontra-se entre os possíveis arranjos dentre as MPT. Mesoeucrocodylia is a well established clade encompassing the greatest taxonomic and morphological diversity within Crocodyliformes. However, its basal phylogeny remains poorly understood. Previous works highly disagree on the relationships and validity of an array of basal mesoeucrocodylian groups, particularly Thalattosuchia, Sebecosuchia, Notosuchia, Peirosauridae and Trematochampsidae. The Mesoeucrocodylia basal phylogeny was critically revaluated based on a broad revision. Taxa belonging to the aforementioned subgroups, as well as taxa assigned to other Mesoeucrocodylia major lineages and its immediate outgroups were reanalyzed. Characters previously proposed within this context were also revised and new characters added to cover the morphological diversity within the selected taxa. The final matrix is 122 taxa and 494 character and the parsimony analyses was performed in TNT (5000 RAS, TBR and Hold 20). The strict consensus of the 3575 most parsimonious trees (MPTs) does not fully agree to any of the previous phylogenies. The new analysis depicts a mix of known clades and relationships proposed for the first time. Thalattosuchia is the basal most Mesoeucrocodylia and sister group of Metasuchia. Metasuchia is formed by a dichotomy including Neosuchia on one branch and Gondwanasuchia on the other. Stomatosuchidae is the basal most Neosuchia, followed by Atoposauridae as the sister group of a polytomy encompassing Tethysuchia, Goniopholididae, Bernissartia and a clade of derived neosuchians (Paralligatoridae, Susisuchus and eusuchians). Gondwanasuchia is formed by a basal polytomy including Doratodon , Peirosauridae + Trematochampsidae, Sebecidae + Mahajangasuchidae and Notosuchia. In this sense, Sebecosuchia was not depicted as a monophyletic group and Baurusuchidae was placed derived in the Notosuchia clade. In addition, Sebecia, as original, conceived was not recovered in all of the MPTs however it is a possible result among the MPTs. CLARK* Department of Anatomy, University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, USA Abstract The Archosauria include the living crocodilians and birds, as well as the fossil dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and basal 'thecodontians'. Cladograms of the basal archosaurs and of the crocodylomorphs are given in this paper. There are three primitive archosaur groups, the Proterosuchidae, the Erythrosuchidae, and the Proterochampsidae, which fall outside the crown-group (crocodilian line plus bird line), and these have been defined as plesions to a restricted Archosauria by Gauthier. The Early Triassic Euparkeria may also fall outside this crown-group, or it may lie on the bird line. The crown-group of archosaurs divides into the Ornithosuchia (the 'bird line': Orn- ithosuchidae, Lagosuchidae, Pterosauria, Dinosauria) and the Croco- dylotarsi nov. (the 'crocodilian line': Phytosauridae, Crocodylo- morpha, Stagonolepididae, Rauisuchidae, and Poposauridae). The latter three families may form a clade (Pseudosuchia s.str.), or the Poposauridae may pair off with Crocodylomorpha. The Crocodylomorpha includes all crocodilians, as well as crocodi- lian-like Triassic and Jurassic terrestrial forms. The Crocodyliformes include the traditional 'Protosuchia', 'Mesosuchia', and Eusuchia, and they are defined by a large number of synapomorphies, particularly of the braincase and occipital regions. Originally described on the basis of a single specimen including a remarkably complete and well-preserved skull and lower jaw, S. clarki is now known from five additional specimens that preserve portions of the craniofacial skeleton. Collectively, these six specimens represent all elements of the head skeleton except the stapedes, thus making the craniofacial skeleton of S. clarki one of the best and most completely preserved among all known basal mesoeucrocodylians. In this report, we provide a detailed description of the entire head skeleton of S. clarki, including a portion of the hyobranchial apparatus. The two most complete and well-preserved specimens differ substantially in several size and shape variables (e.g., projections, angulations, and areas of ornamentation), suggestive of sexual dimorphism.

[email protected] RESUMO – Candidodon itapecuruense Carvalho & Campos é um Mesoeucrocodylia, proveniente da Formação Itapecuru (Cretáceo Inferior), bacia do Parnaíba, Brasil. Esta espécie caracteriza-se por apresentar dentes de morfologia complexa, com uma cúspide principal e uma série de cúspides menores na base da coroa. São apresentados novos elementos referentes ao esqueleto pós-craniano de C. itapecuruense, bem como suas relações com outros Crocodylomorpha. O esqueleto pós-craniano de C. itapecuruense apresenta vértebras anficélicas com o corpo arredondado a levemente quadrangular. O úmero é alongado, cilíndrico e com uma crista deltopeitoral pronunciada. O fêmur é estreito, com a diáfise cilíndrica e reta. Os metatarsais são longos, delgados e com as extremidades pouco expandidas. Apresenta osteodermos muito delgados, de contorno quadrangular a cordiforme não ultrapassando 1mm de espessura, sendo a superfície interna lisa e a externa ornamentada com rugosidades e depressões irregulares. Em todos os osteodermos observa-se, na superfície externa, uma crista localizada no terço posterior da peça. Palavras-chave: Crocodylomorpha, Mesoeucrocodylia, Cretáceo Inferior, bacia do Parnaíba. Abstract: The record of Cretaceous terrestrial lizards (Squamata) in South America is patchy, with seven species described from north-eastern and south-eastern Brazil, and few isolated records of iguanians and scincomorphans from the Argentinian Patagonia. Herein we describe a new genus and species of Cretaceous lizard, Paleochelco occultato gen. et sp. nov., based on a partial skull (MACN-Pv-N 120) discovered about three decades ago that was unnoticed in the Colección Paleovertebrados of the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales “Bernardino Rivadavia”. It comes from rocks of the Upper Cretaceous Bajo de la Carpa Formation (Neuquén Group) exposed at the Campus of the Universidad Nacional del Comahue, north of Neuquén City (Neuquén Province). The new taxon was included into a broad phylogenetic dataset of squamates and it was recovered around the base of Polyglyphanodontia in a constrained analysis using a total-evidence backbone.

    Razanandrongobe sakalavae, a gigantic mesoeucrocodylian from the Middle Jurassic of Madagascar, is the oldest known notosuchian peerj.com /articles/3481/ Introduction A decade ago, Maganuco, Dal Sasso & Pasini (2006) described the fragmentary remains of a very large predatory archosaur from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) of the Mahajanga Basin, Madagascar. The material included a fragmentary right maxilla bearing three teeth, and seven peculiar isolated teeth clearly belonging to the same taxon. In spite of the scanty remains, the presence of a unique combination of features, which included a well-developed bony palate on the maxilla, mesial and lateral teeth respectively U-shaped and sub-oval in cross-section, and very large tooth denticles (1 per mm) on the carinae, allowed the authors to erect the new taxon Razanandrongobe sakalavae Maganuco, Dal Sasso & Pasini, 2006. However, the systematic position of the new species remained uncertain: indeed, besides the autapomorphic denticle size, R. sakalavae shared a mix of potential autapomorphic, synapomorphic, and homoplasic features with crocodylomorphs and theropods. Therefore, the species was referred to Archosauria incertae sedis. Here we describe new cranial material referable to R. sakalavae and consisting of an almost complete right premaxilla, the rostral half of a left dentary, a maxillary fragment with diagnostic teeth, and a very large isolated tooth crown. In addition, we tentatively refer to the same taxon five cranial fragments that were likely collected at the same locality.
