    Tykocin traces of a rich Jewish past Before World War II, the almost six-hundred-year-old Tykocin was one of Podlasie’s many towns – and not only – inhabited almost in half by Jewish population. In gratitude for the idea and coordination of the Virtual Shtetl social service, dedicated to Jewish local history, Albert Stankowski, Director of the Warsaw Ghetto Museum, received from the Mayor of Tykocin, Mariusz Dudziński, a commemorative recognition plaque. „We would like to thank Mr. Albert Stankowski, Director of the Warsaw Ghetto Museum, for his tremendous work for studying and popularizing the history of Polish Jews, including the inhabitants of Tykocin” – the giving of the honorary gift for the Director of the WGM was held in one of the most beautiful places in Podlasie. Located on the banks of the Narew River, Tykocin – Podlasie’s oldest town with its charter dating back to 1425 – boasted the „first in the Crown after Krakow’s” Jewish kehillah in which Jews had settled as of the 16th century. Owing to their thriving merchant, financial, craft, and scientific activity, the city had constantly raised its status. Rebecca bat Meir Tiktiner, a scholar and writer, daughter of Rabbi Meir Tiktiner, the author of “Meneket Rivkah”, published in Prague in 1609 and known in Western Europe, discussing the subjective role of the woman in society, was Tykocin’s famous resident. She is also the author of the song for the holiday of Simchat Torah. In the place of a wooden synagogue, in 1642, a brick, Baroque-style synagogue was built that in the 17th and 18th centuries was the largest in the Crown after Krakow’s synagogue.

In contrast to Auschwitz, there is not much to see at first sight – while Auschwitz is meticulously reconstructed and located in a cultural landscape with historic traditions, Treblinka is in an ‘outback’ site with no big cities nearby, only fields and woods. Auschwitz involved immense terrors, but also cynical camouflage games, while Treblinka was solely a desperate death factory. In Treblinka, there is space for your imagination and thoughts. Many people say that this is where the power of the place lies. It is necessary to outbalance Treblinka – so you will travel to the east to reach Tykocin, a pretty small town with a distinctive shtetl character. Like Treblinka it is not a tourist place. Today Tykocin resembles an ethnographic museum with its charming wooden houses, a synagogue and a majestic baroque church. There is also a memorial to the White Eagle Order – the most prestigious Polish award and which was established here in Tykocin in 1705. A Jewish community was founded here in the 16th century and it quickly became an important centre of both Polish and Jewish cultures.

His ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk—or total work of art—and his outstanding buildings like Stoclet House in Brussels (1905– 1911), now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, left a mark on the architectural and artistic landscape both nationally and internationally. Although this all-round designer has featured in every important exhibition on Viennese Modernism, only sections of his oeuvre have been analyzed in full. To mark this year’s anniversary the exhibition’s team of curators—Matthias Boeckl, Rainald Franz, and Christian Witt-Dörring—set themselves the task of closing the gaps that still exist in the research by using at times unknown sources and by updating his catalogue raisonné.

    CLASSIC SYMMETRY JOSEF HOFFMANN VASES FROM 1922–1923 IN ART DECO STYLE We present a design by Josef Hoffmann from the turn of the year 1923, exceptional in its architectural rendition, proportions, and manual cut. This timeless piece commemorates the 150th anniversary of the renowned designer and architect, whose creations mark the high points of glass design of the 20th century. This edition is limited to a symbolic 150 pieces. SYMMETRY OF CUT, DESIGN AND PURITY OF CRYSTAL The 40-centimetre tall hand-cut vase is the embodiment of Moser DNA, with perfection in the overall cut and precision in the individual cuts. It may not be obvious at first glance, but this piece features one of the most complex designs that our glassmakers have ever created. Josef Hoffmann AUTHOR Austrian architect and designer Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) was one of the founders of Viennese Art Nouveau. One of his most famous architectural achievements is the Stoclet Palace in Brussels, widely regarded as a ground- breaking example of modern architecture. In 1903, he co-founded the Wiener Werkstätte – a Viennese avant-garde art association. He also employed his creativity in household glassware, creating mainstay collections for the Wiener Werkstätte and the Viennese company Lobmeyr. At the time, the supplier and implementer of Hoffmann's unique designs for both of these organisations was none other than Moser glassworks. Hoffmann’s original vases are displayed in the Glass Museum in Passau, Germany. TECHNOLOGY AHEAD OF ITS TIME Realization at the glassworks demands absolute precision and focus from the glassmakers, not only during the blowing of the basic shape, but also when the individual parts are joined together while hot (still on the blowpipe).

The works of Koloman Moser (1868–1918) are considered the artistic antithesis of Josef Hoffmann’s (1870–1956) when it comes to the architecture of their designs: while Hoffmann remained a tectonically austere creator, Ko- loman Moser always incorporated a decorative, painterly element. Designs and objects from the areas of graphics, glass, and ceramics are displayed in the exhibition so as to place these exceptional artists’ works in dialogue with one another and render their individual charac- teristics visible. The careers and works of both creators are closely linked. Both were founding members of the Vienna Secession and, from 1899 onwards, both taught at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts (today’s University for Applied Arts Vienna). Together with the industrialist Fritz Waerndorfer, they founded the Wiener Werkstätte in 1903, thus having a crucial influence on the applied arts in Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century.
