70Th POWELL RIVER FESTIVAL of the PERFORMING ARTS 2014 VOCAL 70th POWELL RIVER FESTIVAL OF THE PERFORMING ARTS 2014 VOCAL Adele Clark - Vocal Adele Clark’s teaching and performance experience span over twenty five years. After obtaining her Bachelor of Music degree at the University of British Columbia she completed her Master’s degree with a major in opera performance. She served as assistant to the Director of Opera studies at University of British Columbia where she also taught voice. Her private studio was established in 1991 and is a thriving enterprise. Many of Ms. Clark’s students have gone on to post secondary education in music and professional performing careers. The constant challenge of staying current in vocal pedagogy and performance practices is very exciting to her. Enthusiasm and a positive approach keep Ms. Clark in demand as an adjudicator, clinician, and workshop teacher across Canada. With a diversified repertoire from opera to cabaret Ms. Clark’s repertoire includes roles as wide-ranging as Nellie Lovett in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd to the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro and Adele in Die Fledermaus, as well as a large collection of crazy ladies and women of dubious repute. Her directing credits include opera, cabaret and musical theatre for professional and community theatre. Ms. Clark is a long standing member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Voice Foundation (professional level), Music Teachers National Association, the B.C Registered Music Teachers’ Association, and the Canadian Actor’s Equity Union. WMC INVESTIGATION: 10-YEAR ANALYSIS OF GENDER & OSCAR NOMINATIONS womensmediacenter.com @womensmediacntr WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER ABOUT THE WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER In 2005, Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan, and Gloria Steinem founded the Women’s Media Center (WMC), a progressive, nonpartisan, nonproft organization endeav- oring to raise the visibility, viability, and decision-making power of women and girls in media and thereby ensuring that their stories get told and their voices are heard. To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys. Our strategic tools include monitoring the media; commissioning and conducting research; and undertaking other special initiatives to spotlight gender and racial bias in news coverage, entertainment flm and television, social media, and other key sectors. Our publications include the book “Unspinning the Spin: The Women’s Media Center Guide to Fair and Accurate Language”; “The Women’s Media Center’s Media Guide to Gender Neutral Coverage of Women Candidates + Politicians”; “The Women’s Media Center Media Guide to Covering Reproductive Issues”; “WMC Media Watch: The Gender Gap in Coverage of Reproductive Issues”; “Writing Rape: How U.S. Media Cover Campus Rape and Sexual Assault”; “WMC Investigation: 10-Year Review of Gender & Emmy Nominations”; and the Women’s Media Center’s annual WMC Status of Women in the U.S.

  • Frodo Is Grea…Who Is That?!?: The
FRODO IS GREA…WHO IS THAT?!?: THE PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION OF AN ONLINE CELEBRITY PARODY A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN ANTHROPOLOGY UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY 2007 Yadana J. Saw Abstract My thesis analyses the phenomenon of Figwit, a non-speaking elf extra who appeared for only three-seconds in the first instalment of Peter Jackson’s 2001 Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Figwit was initially generated as an online parody by female fans of the movie and as a foil to the ‘swooning, drooling girly’ fandom that was being directed towards the movie’s star actors. However, Figwit evolved into a bona fide, albeit minor, celebrity both on and offline as he attracted attention from worldwide media, a small speaking role in the final movie and genuine adulatory fandom as manifested in the production of Figwit merchandise. In my thesis I argue that Figwit’s creation and consequential community formation reflects a dynamic online-offline dialogic in which pre-existing offline and habitus- generated social practices and distinctions, ideal reflexive individuality and celebrity/fandom were dynamically reproduced within online technological frameworks. I also argue that online activity and interactivity is generated by users to strategically express and engage intensified reflexive individuality, affirming sociability and hyper-social distinctions. In this regard I have also argued that these various potentials and imaginaries were significantly enabled by digital architectures and genres of online communication and interactivity. In particular, I discuss the internet’s capacity for searchability, traceability, and rhetorical framing processes that facilitate continuous re-editing authorship possibilities, which are not necessarily replicable in face-to-face interactions.

  • Programme of the Well Known, and the Less Well Known, but Absolutely Every One a Gem
Raffle and Retiring Collection in aid of Registered Charity No. 1143426 Manager, Roger Hopwood St. David’s Hall is owned, funded and managed by Cardiff Council Here we are again! Welcome to our journey through the back catalogue of the House of Mouse! It’s been 6 years since we were last here and as well as the choir changing there’s been lots of new Disney film scores to plunder in putting this concert together. Any concert featuring Disney music at the moment wouldn’t be complete without something from Frozen, so of course we’ll feature that! My daughter might have had something to say if I hadn’t as well! We then put together a programme of the well known, and the less well known, but absolutely every one a gem. And that’s what we present tonight. A lot has happened since we last met! We were delighted to end the year raising over £5,000 for our friends at The Forget Me Not Chorus, we know the money is already making a difference and we hope to be able to invite them back in the future to perform with us. We helped out our friends at Cyncoed Methodist Church raise money for the work they do in Cardiff with the homeless through their ‘Soup Run’ - this year almost £1,000 to add to the £2,000 we’ve raised in previous years. We also performed for the Worshipful Livery Company of Wales at St German’s Church, in February! Now those of you who have followed the choir for some time will remember that we’ve performed there a number of times and it is somewhat chilly! Needless to say it’s an unusual feeling performing with a jumper under my black shirt!! Plus the Curtis family has welcomed another new addition, Noah, on the day after the Cyncoed Concert! Nothing like timed to perfection.
