The pest is known to feed primarily on maize which is a staple food in the continent. Since then, farmers have been using chemical insecticides to control the pest. Chemical insecticides are expensive and harmful to the environment. In this article, the authors Albasini Caniço, António Mexia, and Luisa Santos discuss the possibility of application of an alternative method of control known to be environmentally friendly and economically sustainable in the long term. The method, known as “biological control”, can be easily implemented by farmers, and has the potential to reduce the population of the insect pest and production costs, and bring long term benefits to the environment.

Lakes, in particular, support relatively thick fringing woodland, from which Lepidoptera have been collected, reared and identified. The significance ofAcacia woodlands for biodiversity is discussed. Keywords: Lepidoptera, larvae, Acacia, Kenya, Rift Valley, Naivasha, Elmenteita, Bogoria, Baringo INTRODUCTION DESCRIPTION OF STUDY AREA Acacia trees are very well known as a major constituent of arid Around Lakes Naivasha, Elmenteita and Nakuru, all of which and semi arid parts of Africa. • 1. Introduction
    1. INTRODUCTION The long living Haraz tree (Faidherbia albida)isa key player in traditional agroforestry systems at theinterface between rainfed agriculture and pastoralismin the arid and semi-arid regions of Africa (Depommier, 2003; Faye,et. al., 2009).The treeis widely spread in semi-arid tropical Africa intothe Middle East and Arabian countries, from 270 m below sealevel in Palestine up to 2500 m above sea level in JebelMarra in Sudan and it can live for 70-90 years with some individual trees being reported as old as 150 years (Wickens, 2009; Joker, 2000). Haraz treeis particularly valued in agroforestryon account of its unusual habit of shedding its leavesduring the cropping season and regrowing them duringthe long dry season (Payne, 2000; Ibrahim and Tibin, 2003). It is therefore utilizedfor increasing soil fertility, water holding capacity anddrainage. This is crucial for plants since it resu1ts in nocompetition for water and nutrients between trees andcrops during the rainy season (Gassama-Dia,et. al.,2003). The tree hastwo major functions on a farm, i.e., the provision oftree products such as fodder, fruits, pods and medicineand the tree services like shade, wind breaking and mulching(Bonkoungou, 2001; Elsiddig, 2003; Leakey,et. al., 2005). Therefore, Haraz tree (F. albida) is widely used and is welldocumented for increasing the yields ofcrops grown beneath it. The gum thatspontaneously exudes from the trunk issometimes collected like gum arabic, but itdoes not have the same properties. Thetimber, although straight-grained, denseand weighty, is soft and fibrous. It is usedfor building animal enclosures, huts anddug-out canoes, as well as for makingmany household objects and tools.

Abstract: Meharia interrupta spec. nov. from Dhofar (Oman) is described as new to science. • Developing an Attractant for Monitoring Fruit-Feeding Moths in Citrus Orchards
Developing an attractant for monitoring fruit-feeding moths in citrus orchards A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE of RHODES UNIVERSITY by Mathew Keith Goddard February 2016 Abstract Fruit-piercing moths are a sporadic pest of citrus, especially in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, where the adults can cause significant damage in outbreak years. Currently the only way in which to successfully control fruit-feeding moths within the orchards is the use of repellent lights. However, growers confuse fruit-piercing moths with fruit-sucking moths that don‘t cause primary damage, and there is no way of monitoring which moth species are attacking the fruit in the orchards during the night. In a previous study, banana was shown to be the most attractive bait for a variety of fruit-feeding moth species. Therefore the aim of this study was to determine the population dynamics of fruit-feeding moths develop a cost- effective alternative to the use of fresh banana as a bait for fruit-piercing moths. Fresh banana was compared to nine alternative synthetic attractants, frozen banana and a control under field conditions in several orchards in the Eastern Cape Province. Once again, banana was shown to be the most attractive bait. Some 23 species of fruit-feeding moth species were sampled in the traps, but there was only two fruit-piercing species, Serrodes partita (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Eudocima sp. Surprisingly S. partita, which was thought to be the main pest, comprised only 6.9% of trap catches. Serrodes partita, is a sporadic pest, only becoming problematic every five to 10 years after good rainfall in the Little Karoo region that causes flushes of their larval host, wild plum, Pappea capensis (Ecklon & Zeyher).
