  • Narration in Poetry and Drama
Published on the living handbook of narratology (http://www.lhn.uni-hamburg.de) Narration in Poetry and Drama Peter Hühn Roy Sommer Created: 6. December 2012 Revised: 1. November 2013 Roy Sommer 1 Definition Narration as a communicative act in which a chain of happenings is meaningfully structured and transmitted in a particular medium and from a particular point of view underlies not only narrative fiction proper but also poems and plays in that they, too, represent temporally organized sequences and thus relate “stories,” albeit with certain genre-specific differences, necessarily mediating them in the manner of presentation. Lyric poetry in the strict sense (and not only obviously narrative poetry like ballads or verse romances) typically features strings of primarily mental or psychological happenings perceived through the consciousness of single speakers and articulated from their position. Drama enacts strings of happenings with actors in live performance, the presentation of which, though typically devoid of any overt presenting agency, is mediated e.g. through selection, segmentation and arrangement. Thanks to these features characteristic of narrative, lyric poems as well as plays performed on the stage can be profitably analyzed with the transgeneric application of narratological categories, though with poetry the applicability of the notion of story and with drama that of mediation seems to be in question. 2 Explication Transgeneric narratology proceeds from the assumption that narratology’s highly differentiated system of categories can be applied to the analysis of both poems and plays, possibly opening the way to a more precise definition of their respective generic specificity, even though (lyric) poems do not seem to tell stories and stories in dramas do not seem to be mediated (but presented directly).

  • The Novelistic Poem and the Poetical Novel: Towards A
THE NOVELISTIC POEM AND THE POETICAL NOVEL: TOWARDS A THEORY OF GENERIC INTERRELATION IN THE ROMANTIC PERIOD by Nick Bujak A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland July 2014 © 2014 Nick Bujak All Rights Reserved Abstract This dissertation examines the shifting set of formal and conceptual relations that have structured the intertwined development and reception of “the novel” and “poetry” since the Romantic period. In Part One, I focus on the continuing rise of the novel in the age of best-selling poetry, arguing that narrative poetry and the novel participated in a shared history of narrative innovation. I take the popular and formally innovative poems of Walter Scott as a particularly important example of poetry’s contribution to this shared history. Specifically, I argue that Scott’s knowledge of the ballad tradition and his modern experiments with poetry in that mode enabled him to introduce narrative techniques into the novel that prepare the way for the deployment of free indirect discourse in the novels of Jane Austen and her successors. More broadly, I attempt to describe a theory of generic interrelation that is capable of identifying and explaining the interrelated formal development of works written during the Romantic period. In Part Two, I work to recover and analyze the complex history of perceptions about genre from the Romantic period through the twentieth century. Since the Romantic period itself, many thinkers have been interested in identifying what is essentially poetic about poetry, and, as a closely related matter, in determining what can distinguish poetry from prose and the novel.

The Perspective of Poetry Performance in Eastern Europe Goody, Jack Department of Media and Communications, Aga Khan University, Pakistan. ABSTRACT In the second half of the twentieth century, poets and artists in Eastern Europe in particular took up the challenge of reflecting on and investigating the instrumentalization of language for communicative and political-ideological purposes. They did so by drawing attention to the made-ness of language, its materiality and mediality, and by creating performative situations for themselves and their audiences within which possibilities of verbal expression could be tested and acted out. Poetic performance makes the limits of language and speakability tangible. Narrative poetry: Telling stories through verse By ThoughtCo.com, adapted by Newsela staff on 02.12.20 Word Count 1,046 Image from public domain Narrative poetry tells stories through verse. Like a novel or a short story, a narrative poem has plot, characters and setting. It creates a mood using poetic devices such as rhyme and meter and often includes action and dialogue. In most cases, narrative poems have only one speaker — the narrator — who tells the entire story from beginning to end. For example, Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" is narrated by a grieving man. In the poem, he describes his mysterious confrontation with a raven and his descent into despair. Origins Of Narrative Poetry The earliest poetry was not written but spoken, recited, chanted or sung. Poetic devices like rhythm, rhyme and repetition made stories easier to memorize. This allowed people to hand the poems down through generations. Narrative poetry evolved from this oral tradition. In nearly every part of the world, narrative poetry established a foundation for other literary forms. For example, "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey," which have come down to us from ancient This article is available at 5 reading levels at https://newsela.com. The Anglo Saxon narrative "Beowulf" has inspired modern-day books, movies, operas and computer games.

  • Medieval Romance and Feminine Difference in the Knight's Tale
Medieval Romance and Feminine Difference in The Knight’s Tale Susan Crane Rutgers University ECENTLY THE learned and classicizing aspects of Geoffrey Chau- cer’sR Knighti Tale have received more favor than the tale’s affiliations with romance. A. C. Spearing argues in his Medievalto RenaIjsance in English Poetry that “we must recognize in Chaucer, wherever we look, a contempt for romance of all kinds.“] A. J. Minnis, Derek Brewer, Robert Frank, and J. A. Burrow have also noted Chaucer’s lack of interest in or sympathy for romance, especially for its narrative illogicalities and unmotivated mar- vels.2 Much in The Knight? Tale is not best understood in terms of romance; for example, emphasizing Chaucer’s classicism illuminates ideas about order and justice in the tale, and mythographic analyses consider Chaucer’s use of Boccaccio’s Teseida. Yet readers have long recognized that the romance genre informs The Knight? Tale more fully than any other genre. Spearing concurs with earlier critics in calling the tale a “classical” or “philosophical romance,”a generic modification that simplifies and clar- ifies plot and makes wonders explicable or historicizes them “as part of the religion of the classical past. “3 Chaucer’s generic revisions, in this view, free The Knight) Tale from disorder and irrationality, precisely the qualities that characterize romance from the classical perspective. 1 A. TRANSFORMATION AND CLOSURE IN RENAISSANCE LYRIC POETRY by LISA MICHELLE ULEVICH Under the Direction of Stephen B. Dobranski, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Closure is one of the most important putative goals for highly structured Renaissance verse. Elements of structure—for example, sophisticated prosody or the embedding of a poem within a web of intertextual relationships—determine how poets work toward closure. This project explores how verse forms and genre manifest poets’ attempts to create resolution, and, significantly, how often the challenges of the process instead become the object of focus. Developing a New Formalist approach that focuses on how literary forms are inherently responsive (both to the social conventions that inform various genres and to the expressive goals of individual authors), I examine texts in four important Renaissance poetic genres: epyllion (William Shakespeare’s Venus and Adonis [1593]), satire (Joseph Hall’s Virgidemiae [1598, 1599]), religious lyric (George Herbert’s The Temple [1633]), and pastoral elegy (John Milton’s Epitaphium Damonis [1639] and Lycidas [1637, 1645]).

  • Understanding Narrative Poetry
Understanding Narrative Poetry What is Narrative Poetry? Narrative Poems are poems that tell stories. There is a beginning, which introduces the background to the story, a middle, which tells the action of the event, and an end, which concludes and summarizes the story. What are the origins of Narrative Poetry? Narratives are the oldest form of poetry. Long before there was paper to write on or ink to write with, long before the invention of the printing press, people often shared stories as a form of entertainment. These stories were also often used to relate historical events. In the same way that we spread news through newspapers today, oral stories were used to spread LESSONnews of historical events long ago.PREVIEW In order to help recall details of the events, people began to use rhyme and rhythm to give their stories a musical quality that would allow the story to be remembered and recalled much more easily. Think about how much easier it is to remember the words to a song than it is to recall all of the words of a short story.
