• Breathtaking-Program-Notes
PROGRAM NOTES In the 16th and 17th centuries, the cornetto was fabled for its remarkable ability to imitate the human voice. This concert is a celebration of the affinity of the cornetto and the human voice—an exploration of how they combine, converse, and complement each other, whether responding in the manner of a dialogue, or entwining as two equal partners in a musical texture. The cornetto’s bright timbre, its agility, expressive range, dynamic flexibility, and its affinity for crisp articulation seem to mimic a player speaking through his instrument. Our program, which puts voice and cornetto center stage, is called “breathtaking” because both of them make music with the breath, and because we hope the uncanny imitation will take the listener’s breath away. The Bolognese organist Maurizio Cazzati was an important, though controversial and sometimes polemical, figure in the musical life of his city. When he was appointed to the post of maestro di cappella at the basilica of San Petronio in the 1650s, he undertook a sweeping and brutal reform of the chapel, firing en masse all of the cornettists and trombonists, many of whom had given thirty or forty years of faithful service, and replacing them with violinists and cellists. He was able, however, to attract excellent singers as well as string players to the basilica. His Regina coeli, from a collection of Marian antiphons published in 1667, alternates arioso-like sections with expressive accompanied recitatives, and demonstrates a virtuosity of vocal writing that is nearly instrumental in character. We could almost say that the imitation of the voice by the cornetto and the violin alternates with an imitation of instruments by the voice.

Matthias SCHNEIDER University of Greifswald MONODIC ORGAN CHORALES IN THE ŒUVRE OF JAN PIETERSZOON SWEELINCK’S PUPILS Girolamo Frescobaldi in Rome was to Southern Europe what the great Amsterdam organist and harpsichordist Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was to the North. He was regarded at the beginning of the 17th century as the most famous organist maker in Northern Europe. Many young German organists made pilgrimage to Amsterdam to receive instruction from Sweelinck in organ playing and in the art of composition. Heinrich Scheidemann and Jacob Praetorius from Hamburg, Samuel Scheidt from Halle, Andreas Düben from Leipzig (who later went on to Stockholm), and also Paul Siefert from Gdańsk, Melchior Schildt from Hannover, and probably Petrus Hasse (later organist at St. Mary’s church, Lübeck) were among these young musicians. But what were they expecting to find in Amsterdam? The town had become Calvinistic about 25 years before, and church music life especially had changed not- ably since then. Instrumental music was no longer allowed in church services, and for this reason Sweelinck also lost his position as an organist within the service. Henceforth he was engaged by the town of Amsterdam, the owner of the organs of the Oude Kerk, that Sweelinck now had to play twice a day (normally in the morning and in the evening or, on Sundays, before and after services). Sweelinck earned an impressive salary that ultimately reached the amount of 360 florins a year. But this was not his only income; indeed the students, who came to study with him, normally had to pay around 200 florins a year, including boarding and lodging in the house of the master.

NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XVIII, Number 1 April 2003 A PILGRIMAGE TO IOWA As I sat in the United Airways terminal of O’Hare International Airport, waiting for the recently bankrupt carrier to locate and then install an electric starter for the no. 2 engine, my mind kept returning to David Lodge’s description of the modern academic conference. In Small World (required airport reading for any twenty-first century academic), Lodge writes: “The modern conference resembles the pilgrimage of medieval Christendom in that it allows the participants to indulge themselves in all the pleasures and diversions of travel while appearing to be austerely bent on self-improvement.” He continues by listing the “penitential exercises” which normally accompany the enterprise, though, oddly enough, he omits airport delays. To be sure, the companionship in the terminal (which included nearly a dozen conferees) was anything but penitential, still, I could not help wondering if the delay was prophecy or merely a glitch. The Maryland Handel Festival was a tough act to follow and I, and perhaps others, were apprehensive about whether Handel in Iowa would live up to the high standards set by its august predecessor. In one way the comparison is inappropriate. By the time I started attending the Maryland conference (in the early ‘90’s), it was a first-rate operation, a Cadillac among festivals. Comparing a one-year event with a two-decade institution is unfair, though I am sure in the minds of many it was inevitable. Fortunately, I feel that the experience in Iowa compared very favorably with what many of us had grown accustomed Frontispiece from William Coxe, Anecdotes fo George Frederick Handel and John Christopher Smith to in Maryland.

At the time it was published in 1911, a Seminar of Theory and History of Music was established at the University of Cracow, which meant musicology became a university discipline in Poland.2 Jachimecki’s treat- ise itself proved to be seminal. It initiated an important domain of research of music historians in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries devoted to Italo-Polish relationship in musical culture of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It reflects both the state of knowledge on early Polish music and a specific understanding of how this art was related to Italian. 1. Italian influences in Polish music. Type of approach. Notions of ‘Italian music’, ‘Polish music’ and ‘universal style’ Jachimecki did not claim his book was a synthesis. On the contrary: it comprises nine separate studies-chapters, «not bound by historical causality» (p. VII), but arranged chron- ologically. The author intended to provide «an assessment and analysis» of the primary preserved (and known at the time) «monuments of music» of 1540-1640 and their «his- toric al elucidation». Wayward Sisters prove to be quite a quartet Peter Jacobi Bloomington Herald Times Tuesday May 31, 2011 From what was heard, one never would have suspected. The program was billed “The Naughty List: Music by Braggarts, Hotheads, Curmudgeons, and Snobs.” The music, mostly of 17th century vintage, was a delight to hear, definitely period material, often lyrical or lilting, alternately affecting and danceable. It hinted not at all that their creators reportedly lived lives less nice than their compositions. But then, the performers of Sunday afternoon’s concert in St. Thomas Lutheran Church were not what their collective label indicated: Wayward Sisters. They aren’t sisters and nothing seemed wayward, surely not musicianship, about violinist Beth Wenstrom, recorder specialist Anne Timberlake, and cellist Anna Steinhoff. What’s more, the “sisters” brought a “brother” along, lutenist and theorbo player John Lenti. They made quite a quartet. They also proved themselves excellent soloists. And the program gave each at least one opportunity to take the spotlight. For violinist Wenstrom, that came in William Brade’s Choral with Variations and the Grave momvement of Nicola Matteis’ Ayres for the Violin: Book 4. Wenstrom contributed some heated fiddling during these pieces. Timberlake, a Jacobs School alum, produced floods of clarion tones on several recorders but was particularly prominent in two items by Tarquinio Merula, a Sonata Prima and Ciaconna, that made her instrument the equivalent of a coloratura soprano, and an awfully good one at that. Steinhoff produced resonant and thrusting tones on her Baroque cello in a performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s Sonata Number 3 in A Minor.

  • Baroque for Baby Playlist Curated by Violinist Cristina Zacharias
Baroque for Baby Playlist curated by violinist Cristina Zacharias Following its first digital-only release in March 2020, Tafelmusik returns with Baroque for Baby, a kid-friendly playlist curated by violinist and mother of two, Cristina Zacharias. Tafelmusik’s core baroque repertoire has particular appeal for younger listeners — catchy dance music with great rhythms, singable melodies, plenty of repetition, and lots of opportunity to showcase the textures and sounds of various wind, string, and plucked instruments. Selections from renowned Tafelmusik recordings include music by Telemann, Purcell, Lully, Vivaldi, Handel, Monteverdi, Rameau, Merula, Sweelink, and Marais. Zacharias’s choices balance enlivening, energetic music that encourages children to move and dance with calming, quieter pieces for bedtime. Includes a bonus track of commentary by Zacharias about her selections. Available on digital platforms starting October 16, 2020. CURATOR NOTE: “There is nothing more magical than watching a baby or young child respond to music — the immediate natural and instinctive response to melody and rhythm is a reminder of just how fundamental music is in our lives. There are countless studies and reports that show the impact of music on the developing mind — improvements are evident in self-regulation, spatial awareness, memory, language development, self- expression, motor skills, just to name a few. Music and learning are interwoven in our brains in a powerful way. As a musician and a parent, the importance of music for babies is no surprise
