Ludwing Wittgenstein, Cultura y Valor, Aforismo 83. 3 RESUMEN Las montañas y los sujetos evocan la relación que establecen los agentes sociales con el medio de montaña a través del ascenso a las grandes elevaciones. Esta relación contiene un trasfondo de sentidos y significaciones que lo posibilita; manifestando, generando y proyectando de esa manera un universo simbólico implícito en los distintos escenarios tales como en el relato, las imágenes, el Ethos, la visión del mundo o el imaginario social. La comprensión de este universo se basa principalmente en el estudio a través de la mentalidad corporal, es decir asentando la compresión, la aprehensión y el análisis a través del cuerpo como una herramienta de investigación. En este trabajo se pretende entender desde cuándo y por qué se ejerce esta actividad, tomando como referente al alpinismo europeo y la visita de científicos y exploradores del viejo continente a los Andes ecuatoriales hasta las nuevas manifestaciones de la actividad en la actualidad. El sustento así como la finalidad del análisis interpretativo es intentar aproximarse a la dinámica social y la construcción semántica del andinismo desde una mirada antropológica, entendiendo a la cultura como una trama compleja de sistemas simbólicos donde se proyecta el accionar humano. ABSTRACT Mountains and individuals evoke the relationship established by social partners through mountain ascent of the higher elevations. This relation contains an undercurrent of senses and meanings that enables it; meanwhile manifesting, creating and projecting in that way a symbolic universe implicit in the various scenarios such as story, images, Ethos, world view or social imaginary. The understanding of this universe is based primarily on the study of the mind through body, basing the compression, apprehension and analysis through the body as a research tool. This paper tries to understand since when and why this activity is exercised, taking as reference the European mountaineering and the visit of scientists and explorers from the old continent to the equatorial Andes until new manifestations of activity today. Esta relación se ejerce a través de normas disciplinarias o valorativas que terminan por definirlo como un modo de vida o bien como deporte, ambos aspectos atravesados por el apelativo de aventura debido al alejamiento del sector urbano que la ejecución de su práctica exige; también se la ha definido como actividad de riesgo por la exposición o factores de accidente que puede acarrear. Esta actividad se alimenta del uso de técnicas, métodos, experiencias apropiadas y estrictas para el tipo de terreno en el que se desarrolla. En el Ecuador al montañismo se lo conoce con el calificativo de Andinismo, debido a la geografía en la que se desarrolla, en el caso del Ecuador: Los Andes Ecuatoriales1. Considerados como “fascinantes” por los exploradores, académicos y naturalistas extranjeros de la época colonial, los Andes fueron de sumo interés, no solo en términos de investigación científica sino también con la intención de realizar ascensiones a las altas cumbres, atraídos por el “solemne espectáculo”2 que otorga la montaña al sujeto que la contempla. Posteriormente, en la época republicana y con una mayor presencia de personajes locales, siguió manteniéndose este continuum contemplativo que conlleva el esfuerzo de conquistar las cumbres. De esta manera se fue urdiendo el lugar de la representación de la montaña, regida principalmente por los sujetos que intentan asir su cima bajo el manto ideológico de conquista, empresa determinada por ese lugar inhabitable, lejano, misterioso y extraño que comprende la cumbre de una montaña. La práctica del andinismo en los Andes Ecuatoriales converge en una serie de construcciones simbólicas, las cuales dan lugar a una multiplicidad de sentidos y significaciones que han configurado, constreñido y definido su ambiente social. A major stage in the development of alpinism was the climbing of Mont Blanc in 1776 by the physician Michelle-Gabriel Pacar and the mountain shepherd and crystal collector Jacques Balma, who was also his guide during the climbing. With this significant climbing, only one stage of exploring the mountains ends. The importance of mountain guides, being professionals, for the development of alpinism, driven by the desires of their clients and scientific and educational purpose is huge. Charlet has recently retired after forty-seven years climbing as a , guide; in the course of his career he made nearly 3,ooo expeditions in the Alps, ninety-nine of them since becoming a grandfather! Mter twenty years' service he is not standing again for election as Mayor of Argentiere. Herr Albert Eggler is President of the Swiss Alpine Club and was leader of the successful Swiss Mount Everest expedition of I956. Mr. C. F. Meade is known for his Himalayan travels and particularly for his attempts on Kamet; to him is due the credit for discovering the only practicable route up the mountain and he was unlucky not to have reached the summit. In the Alps he made many expeditions including the first descent of the North-east an~te of the J ungfrau with Ulrich and Heinrich Fuhrer in I 903 eight years before the first ascent of the ridge. We congratulate Mr. A. E. Gunther on having been elected an Hono­ rary Member of the Club Andino Venenolano de Merida. ONE HuNDRED YEARS AGo.     25 An even score Greg Child’s 1983 trip to the Karakoram left him with a chaotic collage of experiences—from the exhilaration of a first ascent of Lobsang Spire to the feeling of hopelessness and depression from losing a friend and climbing partner. It also left his mind filled with strong memories—of people, of events and of mountains. Of the images of mountains that remained sharply focused in Child’s mind, the most enduring perhaps was not that of K2 or its satellite 8000 m peaks. It was of Gasherbrum IV, a strikingly symmetrical trapezoid of rock and ice that presided over Concordia at the head of the Baltoro Glacier (see image 25.1). Though far less familiar than Ama Dablam, Machhapuchhare or the Matterhorn, it is undeniably one of the world’s most beautiful mountains. Child said: After Broad Peak I’d promised myself I would never return to the Himalayas. It was a personal, emphatic, and categoric promise. It was also a promise I could not keep. Again and again the symmetrical silhouette of a truncated, pyramidal mountain kept appearing in my thoughts: Gasherbrum IV. My recollection of it from the summit ridge of Broad Peak, and Pete’s suggestion to some day climb its Northwest Ridge, remained etched in my memory.1 Gasherbrum IV offered a considerable climbing challenge in addition to its beauty. Remarkably, the peak had been climbed only once—in 1958, by its North-East Ridge by Italians Carlo Mauri and Walter Bonatti. There are at least two reasons for its amazing lack of attention.

    Piolets d’Or 2017 On Thursday, April 13th, the GHM will host an international forum to discuss the increasing professionalization of mountaineering An International Celebration of Grand Alpinism and more specifically, the question of proof of ascents in alpinism. François Carrell will moderate a debate between alpinists, MÉTROPOLE GRENOBLOISE | LA GRAVE journalists and historians, revisiting famous climbing controversies, exploring new questions and discussing potential changes to the Press Release # 2 | March 2017 charter of the Piolet d’Or. th Part One | April 11-15 , 2017 At the beginning of the evening, members of the Piolet d’Or Jury will announce the winning ascents of 2016. The Piolet d’Or award ceremony will take place in November 2017 during Grenoble’s Jeff Lowe mountain film festival, Rencontres Ciné Montagne. The week will also ______________________ feature a mountain literature themed book fair on April 12th at LA GRAVE Alps-Congrès, as well as unique tours of local exhibits in the city’s museums, accompanied by climbers who are passionate about art. Finally, to add some high mountain flavor to the week’s events, the 2017 Piolet d’Or invites you to join them for two days in the village of La Grave, nestled at the foot of the Meije - one of the Alp’s mythical summits. Featuring festive cultural and sporting events, the weekend will celebrate alpine climbing and include hands-on workshops introducing participants to mountaineering.
