In the Footsteps of St. Benedict with the Monks of Norcia, Italy October 5 - 14 2016 In the Footsteps of St. Benedict with the Monks of Norcia, Italy October 5 - 14 2016 Day 1 Oct 5 – Depart USA for overnight flight to Rome, please arrive before 10:45 am. Day 2 – Oct 6 - Rome/Norcia Upon arrival in Rome set off into the wild hills of Umbria for the medieval walled town of Norcia; birth place of St. Benedict and his twin sister, St. Scholastica, in 480. Upon arrival meet with the Monks of the Monastery of San Benedetto, our host for our stay in Italy. While in Norcia all are invited to join the monks for Vespers and Compline. Overnight in Norcia. (D) Day 3 – Oct 07 – Norcia Morning visit to the Monastery of San Benedetto, built over the birthplace of the twin Saints. Afternoon visit to the nearby 12th Century Abbey of Sain’Eutizio and the Church of San Scholastica. Take in the pastoral scenery of the hills that surrounded the Saints in the time of their youth when their Christian formation was nurtured by the monastic tradition of the local monks. Arrive first at the Abbey of San’t Eutizio, build upon the land that St. Spes and his hermits lived on in the years preceding the birth of Benedict & Scholastica. As Benedict often came here to pray during his youth, this Abbey has been referred to as the “cradle of the Benedictine Order”. We continue on to the Church of San Scholastica. Tradition tells of the twin saints sharing a close spiritual bond from childhood and that after Benedict left for Rome, Scholastica dedicated her life to God by living in community with the other holy women on an area of land near Norcia. It was on this land that the Church of San Scholastica was built centuries later. Overnight in Norcia. (B, D) Day 4 – Oct 8 - Norcia Morning visit to the future monastery of the Benedictine Monks of Norcia. Pending confirmation we will continue on to Castelluccio and then on to Cascia, home of St. Rita. Return to Norcia for dinner and overnight. (B, D) Day 5 – Oct 9 – Norcia/Assisi/Norcia After an early Mass enjoy an excursion to Assisi, the 12th Century birthplace of St. Francis & St. Clare, who, like Benedict & Scholastica, dedicated their lives to God and changed history. Upon arrival will visit the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angles which houses the Porziuncola. ETERNAL BATTLEFIELD GLORY Dear Readers, n the glorious history of the Polish army, there were many battles where Iour soldiers showed exceptional heroism and sacrifice. The seizure of the Monte Cassino abbey has its special place in the hearts and memory of Poles. General Władysław Anders wrote in his order: “Long have we waited for this moment of retaliation and revenge on our eternal enemy. […] for this ruffianly attack of Germany on Poland, for partitioning Poland jointly with the Bolsheviks, […] for the misery and tragedy of our Fatherland, for our sufferings and exile.” The soldiers of the Polish II Corps did not waste this opportunity and seized the reinforced position in the abbey’s ruins, which had earlier been resisting the gunfire, bombing and attacks of the Allied forces. Polish determination and heroism broke the fierce defense line of the German forces. This victory was however paid very dearly for. On the hillside of Monte Cassino over 900 soldiers were killed, and almost 3,000 wounded. Still, the Monte Cassino success, although paid for with blood, paved the way to independent Poland. Saint John Paul II, when talking about the Battle of Monte Cassino, said about a live symbol of will to live, of sovereignty. INTRODUCTION I learned to show this reverence and respect only to those books of the scriptures that are now called canonical so that I most firmly believe that none of their authors erred in writing anything. And if I come upon something in those writings that seems contrary to the truth, I have no doubt that either the manuscript is defective or the translator did not follow what was said or that I did not understand it. I, however, read other authors in such a way that, no matter how much they excel in holiness and learning, I do not suppose that something is true by reason of the fact that they thought so, but because they were able to convince me either through those canonical authors or by plausible reason that it does not depart from the truth.1 Augustine to Jerome, Letter 82 Martin Luther and his reforming colleagues maintained that Scripture alone determines the articles of faith. All that the church believes, teaches, and confesses rests upon the authority of the canonical scriptures, upon the unique revelation of God himself through his prophets and apostles.     L’UMBRIA 60 e la fioritura di CASTELLUCCIO DI NORCIA Dal 3 al 7 Luglio 2019 1° giorno: Riviera Ligure / Perugia / Foligno Incontro dei Sigg.ri Partecipanti nelle località/orario convenuti e partenza per l’Umbria. Arrivo per il pranzo in ristorante a Perugia e visita guidata della città: Fontana Maggiore, la Cattedrale, il Palazzo dei Priori, dove si trova il Museo Nazionale dell’Umbria, Corso Vannucci, la via principale della città; Piazza Italia, che occupa il sito della cinquecentesca rocca Paolina, Via Biagiotti, ed il Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo. Al termine proseguimento per Foligno, sistemazione in albergo, cena e pernottamento. 2° giorno: Foligno / Castelluccio di Norcia / Norcia / Trevi / Foligno Prima colazione in albergo e partenza per Castelluccio di Norcia che si trova nel Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini a quota 1452 metri ed a pochi chilometri da Norcia. Il borgo si trova in cima ad una collina, al centro di un altopiano che fra giugno e luglio è rinomato per “La Fioritura delle lenticchie” che mescolandosi con i papaveri crea un effetto meraviglioso e suggestivo. Proseguimento per Norcia e pranzo in ristorante. Nel pomeriggio ci dirigiamo verso Trevi, uno dei borghi più belli dell’Umbria e conosciuto come la città dell’olio, affacciato sulla ringhiera Umbra. Dopo la visita di Trevi, trasferimento in un frantoio per la degustazione dell’olio extra vergine di oliva. Al termine rientro in albergo, cena e pernottamento. 3° giorno: Foligno / Gubbio / Assisi / Foligno Prima colazione in albergo. Mattinata dedicata alla visita guidata di Gubbio, tra le più antiche città dell’Umbria, meravigliosamente conservata nei secoli e ricca di monumenti che testimoniano il suo glorioso passato.
