11th Countryside Animafest Cyprus July 19-22, Prastio Avdimou village, Limassol As Cyprus prepares to celebrate its European presidency, the Countryside Documentary and Animated Film Festival is integrated in the upcoming festivities, peeling its documentary layers back to reveal its latest reincarnation: the 11th Countryside Animafest Cyprus. This animation-oriented showcase comes equipped with an Official Competition Section and an International Jury. Starting this year, the festival will extend its reach to the Cypriot countryside under the general title Animafest on tour. Come October, it will curate a handpicked selection of the best animation films of the season tagged Aspects of the Fantastic within the context of the International Short Film Festival of Cyprus. In November, in collaboration with the Cyprus University of Technology the MediaDesk Cyprus and Goethe-Institut Cyprus, it will organize an international convention on traditional techniques in 21st Century animation in Limassol. The Countryside Animafest Cyprus aims at raising audience awareness and promoting cultural, financial and social development in the field of animation. To this end, the festival has the pleasure of establishing an International Competition Section, while starting 2013 it will introduce a second one focusing on Cypriot creatives. The festival is also initiating international collaborations with well-established counterparts, like the Stuttgart-based Trickfilm Festival, who will take us on a private tour of the year?s best-of, while Mexico native Cutout Fest will provide a "who's who" of Latin American animation. A special animation program will be curated also by Gerben Schermer, Director of Holland Animation Film Festival. The festival's new direction will be reinforced by established members of the international film community, who will pick out two winners (first and second place) for best film in the International Competition Section, accompanied by 2000 and 1000 euros respectively. This year's jury will consist of producer Lucie Kalmar, a former festival and foreign markets exec at Wild Bunch, who is currently involved in the development of Festival Scope. Kalmar will be joined by Arril Johnson, a senior animation lecturer at the University of the West of England, Bristol, whose animation experience already counts four decades, Yannis Yapanis a distinguished Cypriot film Director, The producer of Zagreb Animafest Vjera Matkovic and Igor Prassel, Festival Program Director of ANIMATEKA The festival is co-organized by NGO "Views of the World" the "Hambis Printmaking Museum" and Media Desk Cyprus it is supported by Hellenic Bank and Goethe Institute Cyprus under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Culture. ABOUT LIMASSOL The district of Limassol which covers the south part of Cyprus, borders with the district of Larnaca in the east, with the district of Paphos in the west, as well as with the capital Nicosia in the north. The area of Limassol is 1,393 km² i.e. 15% of the whole area of Cyprus. About 80 km of Limassol is washed by the sea. The magnificent setting of the ancient Kourion Theater is used for summer concerts and theatrical productions. In the middle Ages, Limassol hosted the marriage of Richard the Lionheart with Berengaria of Navarre from whom he crowned Queen of England. Thereafter the Crusaders made their headquarters at the Square keep west of the city, known as Kolossi Medieval Castle, where they fostered the making of wines, particularly the sweet dessert wine “Commandaria” – the oldest named wine in the world.

City of Limassol Intercultural Profile Introduction1 Like other countries of the Mediterranean basin Cyprus has historically been a country of emigration, exporting migrants to richer countries to the extent that the number of Cypriots currently living abroad nears halves the population of the island. Since the 1980s however the government controlled part of the Republic of Cyprus has experienced several large waves of immigration, most importantly as a result of the Lebanese Civil War, the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the Gulf War, the conflicts in Yugoslavia and the accession of Cyprus to the EU in 2004. The Cypriot government has developed over the years and in a rather pragmatic way different policies which vary according to the economic status of the various migrant groups. The multiculturalist, assimilationist and guest‐worker models co‐exist side by side in a country where the development of a comprehensive integration policy is only just beginning. Of all the cities on the island Limassol is beyond doubt the most cosmopolitan. Its population has more than doubled since the de facto division of Cyprus in 1974. Compared to other cities, Limassol hosts the largest group of refugees from the northern part of the island, the largest Russian community and the largest Roma community. Limassol is widely known as an important tourist destination and a hub for numerous offshore companies. It also harbours the biggest port in the Mediterranean transit trade and has traditionally strong links with nearby countries such as Lebanon and Israel. The UK sovereign base area of Akrotiri is located just West of the main port and provides a vivid reminder of the colonial past and the strategic importance of the island.2 Together with the separation of the two main ethnic groups after 1974, these various elements explain to a large extent the specific cultural mix within the city as well as the way in which Limassolans perceive cultural diversity.
