27 No. 39. THE BURIALS LAWS, 1893 AND 1937. ORDER UNDER SECTION 1. In exercise of the powers vested in the Governor by section 1 of the Burials Laws, 1896 and 1937, and delegated to me by Notification No. 172 published in Supplement No. 3 to the Gazette of the 19th June, 1947,1, Bertram John Weston, Commissioner of the District of Limassol, do hereby order that a new burial ground shall be provided, under the provisions of the said Laws, for use by the Christian community of the village of Prastio (Kellaki) in Limassol District, in lieu of the burial ground now in use by the said community. ~~ Limassol, B. Whereas in pursuance of Notification No. 93, published in Gazette Supplement No. 3 of 13th March, 1940, a fit and proper site has been registered in the books of the Land Registry Office as a burial-ground for the burial of the dead by the Orthodox-Christian Community of the village of Mesayitonia in the District of Limassol: Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers vested in the Governor by section 14 of the Burials Laws, 1896 and 1937, and duly deputed to me under Notification No. 172, published in Supplement No. 3 to the Gazette of the 19th June, 1947, I, Bertram John Weston, Commissioner of the District of Limassol, do hereby order that, from and after the 15th day of February, 1948, no burial shall take place in the burial-ground in lieu whereof the new burial-ground above referred to has been provided. 11th Countryside Animafest Cyprus July 19-22, Prastio Avdimou village, Limassol As Cyprus prepares to celebrate its European presidency, the Countryside Documentary and Animated Film Festival is integrated in the upcoming festivities, peeling its documentary layers back to reveal its latest reincarnation: the 11th Countryside Animafest Cyprus. This animation-oriented showcase comes equipped with an Official Competition Section and an International Jury. Starting this year, the festival will extend its reach to the Cypriot countryside under the general title Animafest on tour. Come October, it will curate a handpicked selection of the best animation films of the season tagged Aspects of the Fantastic within the context of the International Short Film Festival of Cyprus. In November, in collaboration with the Cyprus University of Technology the MediaDesk Cyprus and Goethe-Institut Cyprus, it will organize an international convention on traditional techniques in 21st Century animation in Limassol. The Countryside Animafest Cyprus aims at raising audience awareness and promoting cultural, financial and social development in the field of animation. To this end, the festival has the pleasure of establishing an International Competition Section, while starting 2013 it will introduce a second one focusing on Cypriot creatives. The festival is also initiating international collaborations with well-established counterparts, like the Stuttgart-based Trickfilm Festival, who will take us on a private tour of the year?s best-of, while Mexico native Cutout Fest will provide a "who's who" of Latin American animation. A special animation program will be curated also by Gerben Schermer, Director of Holland Animation Film Festival. Map 72 Cyprus Compiled by D. Rupp, 1994 Introduction Many factors, both ancient and not so ancient, have contributed to the cultural map that can be constructed of Cyprus between 1100 B.C. and A.D. 640. Before the beginning of the third century B.C. the island remained on the periphery of the Greek world. Only then did hellenization begin to permeate its entire society, not just the elite in the urban centers of some of the Iron Age kingdoms. Political and economic ties with the Levant, as well as cultural influences, had contributed significantly to shaping the Cypriote landscape in the Iron Age. Until hellenization irrevocably transformed Cypriote society and its use of the landscape in the Hellenistic period, the historical geography of the island must be understood in its own indigenous terms. Aside from the principal urban centers of the Iron Age kingdoms, Greek and Roman sources do not provide a wealth of detailed information on the geography of Cyprus. Extant epigraphical sources are likewise relatively mute on this topic. It is thus archaeology that must be employed as the primary source for historical geography. In the later nineteenth century, the plundering of chamber tombs and of rural sanctuaries under the guise of research was the norm in Cypriote archaeology. Although subsequently this regrettable approach was abandoned and the scientific excavation of kingdom centers commenced, fascination with the material culture revealed by tombs and by sanctuaries continued unabated. As a result, while there now exists a wealth of evidence for their location, overall distribution patterns and periods of occupation, by contrast the location, size and nature of settlements is much less well understood.
