I am thankful for the fi nancial support of the Early Career Scheme Fellowship, awarded by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong. I received four courses of teaching relief as well as funding for a research assistant and con- ference travel. The Doris Zimmern HKU-Cambridge Hughes Hall Fellowship allowed me to work on the monograph in Cambridge and to share my research with scholars in the UK and Europe.
