Experience the pleasure Errors in the Rule Book of skippering a Snipe In spite of every care, and all precautions taken to insure built by sailors, for perfection, errors in printing anything are bound to creep in sailors, to win! somehow - somewhere. Thus in the 1961 SCIRA Rule Book a couple have been discovered, and here they are: Lippincott Snipes are (1) Page 80,Snipe Sails Dimensions, Roach on foot of jib (see built to the same exact diagram): It now reads, "Maximum roach of 5" measured to ing requ i rements demanded tangent points - not grommet centers. " This was restated last year for the sake of clarity to read, " Maximum roach of 6" by racing skippers of measured from grommet centers. Class Dues Approved by IYRU Of special interest to loyal organization members of all one- design racing classes is the recent statement by the IYRU to the Secretary of the International Flying Dutchman Class: fc' For your information,the Committee was satisfied that, in a //ell controlled and well administered class, income was essential and it was reasonable to limit entries to champion ships to paid members of the Association. " This official ruling by IYRU confirms what the International MORE... FUN Snipe Class has advocated and practiced for several years, not only on a local,but also international basis. The official dues are small and allowances are made for specific cases, In '61 but in all cases, financial contribution is considered obligatory for all individuals or groups and nations who want to participate in a in SCIRA activities. It is due to this policy and the usually cheerful compliance with the requirements that SCIRA has developed into the strong organization it is today. BOX 413 OAKVILLE, ONT., The Illinois Valley Yacht Club of Peoria, Illinois, and Snipe CANADA Fleet 131,of which the late Cleve Slauson was a member,decided to inaugurate a new regatta in memory of their fellow sailor. To be known as the Cleve Slauson Memorial Regatta, this invitational series will be held each year around Memorial Day. FIBERGLAS SNIPES The first was was held June 10-1 lth, 1961. HULLS — KITS Three races were scheduled for the weekend, and the lack of wind prevented a race Saturday morning. But that afternoon, a SPARS — SAILS little wind finally came up out of the west and the first race was on. Stan Salzenstein got away first, rounded the windward mark UNSURPASSED QUALITY—REALISTIC PRICES first, and was first over the finish line. No one could catch him! Sam Chapin of Springfield came in 2nd, Tom Head 3rd, and Dan Wesselhoft, 4th. Sunday morning, the wind was very light out of the southwest. WE SHIP ANYWHERE! Positions changed frequently throughout the entire course and finally ended up when Tom Head came in first with Chapin close behind in 2nd again. Wesselhoft was 3rd. When the wind freshened up that afternoon, there was a little more action. The CUSTOM BUILT SNIPES Wesselhoft brothers jumped to an early lead with Head and Chapin in hot pursuit. Tom Palmer of Decatur sailed into 3rd position on the second leg and the finish was Wesselhoft 1st, MASTS- BOOMS-RUDDERS Chapin in 2nd again. Palmer 3rd, and Head 4th. Thus Chapin with three 2nds won the first Slauson regatta CENTERBOARD LIFTS and took home the beautiful new Cleve Slauson Memorial Trophy pictured above. It is a punch bowl, tray, and 12 cups - all THE FAMOUS engraved with Snipes. Sam filled the bowl several times and everyone went home in good spirits. 26 Snipers from 4 Illinois SHEET JAM fleets participated and the presence of Chicago representatives — our specialty/ s was especially appreciated. More than 25 Snipes, all exactly alike In construction and equip ment, are being furnished by one builder and this feat in itself is quite unusual for sailing classes in the United States. All must be privately financed and every Sniper lias the opportunity to get one of these fine boats and, at the same time,give support to the occasion. They are all built of Western Cedar with mahogany marine ply wood deck with Everdur fastenings and hard glue construction. The windward mark was fairly close to shore, which to like so well lately with a 2-2-11. was quite steep. The seven races of the Heinzerling and Wells Series will atart with the first one Monday P. M. at 2:30. There will be two races each on Tuesday and Wednesday,and then one race each in the morning on Thursday and Friday.
