Thoroughfare 5.qxp 11/20/2006 11:17 AM Page 78 Thoroughfare 6.qxp 11/20/2006 11:17 AM Page 79 Chapter 6 The Saints Flee from Ohio to Missouri 1838 he year 1837 was a time of tragedy for the Church in Kirtland. “The spirit of speculation in lands and property of all kinds, which was so prevalent throughout the whole nation, was taking deep root in the Church,” wrote Joseph Smith. “As the fruits of this spirit, evil surmisings, fault-finding, disunion, dissension, and apostasy followed in quick succession, andT it seemed as though all the powers of earth and hell were combining their influence in an especial manner to overthrow the Church at once, and make a final end.”1 One sorrowful result of this disunity was that many members left the Church at this time. Some of them even joined forces with Mormon haters to harass the faithful Saints. The apostates were so mean-spirited that they forced the steadfast members of the Church in Ohio to flee to Missouri in order to escape persecution. This chapter will discuss the events that led to this apostasy. It will also give an account of the members’ mass exodus to Missouri, with special emphasis on their travels along the Mormon thoroughfare of Illinois. The Road to Apostasy The historic background to the “Great Apostasy” in Ohio began soon after the Saints completed construction of the Kirtland Temple in the spring of 1836. Smith: This Diary of SILAS SANFORD SMITH covers a period of time from November 4, 1879 to October 25, 1880 during which time he was leading and assisting to get a colony of L.D.S. people located and settled on the San Juan River in Southeast Utah and one in which to settle emigrants from the Southern states in the San Luis Valley in South Central Colorado. This Diary is in possession of Mrs. Edith Smith Dibble, daughter of Silas S. Smith, Salt Lake City, 1960, and has not before been published. The Diary is contained in a small leather covered book. The writing done in lead pencil and parts are very dim. In addition to the Diary, it contains some miscellaneous records of calls and transactions and materials assembled for himself and others as he prepared to fulfilling this colonization call made of him by his Church Officials. This copy was prepared from the original by Albert E. Smith assisted by Mrs. Edith S. Dibble and Mrs. Albert E. Smith. Some explanatory notes are included where the meaning seemed to be somewhat obscure. Such notes are indicated as made. Tues., Nov. 4 1879 —Started for the San Juan via Potato Valley. Drove to Watson’s Ranch, 13 miles. Wed. 5 —Drove to Huston’s farm and found pasturage. 15 miles. Thurs. 6 —Stopped at Panguitch for dinner. Found the boys with the stock thence to Butler’s farm. -

The Archive of Restoration Culture, 1997–2002 Richard Lyman Bushman hen I first began work on Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling in W 1996, I realized that reconstructing the cultural environment of the Prophet would be one of my largest tasks. I could scarcely conceive how to go about probing the huge quantities of sermons, newspapers, journals, pamphlets, books, artworks, and private diaries that possibly bore on the restoration of the gospel in the 1820s through the 1840s. Yet the culture of that period bore directly on the success of the young church under Joseph Smith’s leadership. People would never be able to grasp theological ideas that were entirely foreign to them. They would need a basic preparation for the Prophet’s revelations, making the cultural environment crucial to understanding how the Restoration came about. Faced with this apparently insuperable difficulty, it occurred to me that my problem was the problem of every historian interested in early history of the Church. We all need information about the sources as they relate to the distinctive doctrines of the Restoration. -

NEW BOOK EXCERPT Nauvoo Neighbor The Latter-day Saint Experience at the Mississippi River, 1843–1845 Susan Easton Black he Nauvoo Neighbor is a significant key to understanding the Latter-day TSaint experience at the Mississippi River from 1843 to 1845. Although only three volumes were published, the newspaper contains 127 issues, each spanning four pages in length, with each page divided into six columns. This translates into approximately 4,000 single-spaced pages on 8½" x 11" paper. From the first issue on Wednesday, May 3, 1843, to the last issue on Wednesday, October 29, 1845, its masthead proudly proclaims, “our motto—the saints’ singularity—is unity, liberty, charity.” The new bookThe Best of the Nauvoo Neighborand the accompanying searchable DVD-ROM of all 127 issues surpass on many fronts local news printed in the official Nauvoo LDS paper, the Times and Seasons. The Neighbor played a significant role in the national discussion of Mormonism, the presidential election of 1844, and perceptions of the martyrdom of Joseph Smith. The paper printed an unrelenting defense of Mormonism against a backdrop of exaggerated reports and sensational claims that stemmed from Hancock County to newspapers in the East. Senior editor John Taylor did not hesitate to confront politician, newspaper columnist, or the governor of Illinois on issues of the day that distorted the Mormon faith. His words were written in defense of Joseph Smith and thousands of Mormons, who had gathered on the banks of the Mississippi River and built Zion in Nauvoo. Among those who had come were Latter- day Saint exiles seeking refuge from unchecked persecution in the state of Missouri and English converts pushed westward by black clouds of war, poverty, and promises of a glorious new day in an American Zion. -

He was of the “royal lineage”—nephew of the Prophet Joseph and son of the Patriarch Hyrum—and his zeal for the Restoration never wavered. Whatever privileges may have accrued to him from his parentage were surpassed in spades by the trials he suffered as a young man. Combined, they produced a complex and very human being. President of all High Priests in the Church, 1870-77. President of High Priests Quorum, Salt Lake Stake, 1877-88. Elias Smith was the first Probate Judge in Salt Lake City, which position he held for thirty-two years, until his death. He was also editor for the Deseret News, 1856-63. 2. JOHN SMITH (1781-1854) Younger brother of Joseph Smith, Sr. by 10 years. Father of George A. Smith, uncle of Joseph Smith. Baptized 10 Jan 1832 as he was dying from consumption. He slowly recovered. He was sustained as assistant counselor to the First Presidency from 3 Sep 1837 until Joseph Smith’s death, 27 Jun 1844. He was appointed president of the Salt Lake High Council on 3 Oct 1847. He graduated in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania and practiced medicine in New York City. -
