THE 1984 OLYMPIC GAMES 202 Carl Lewis Made Only a Cameo Appearance in the Long Jump
THE 1984 OLYMPIC GAMES 202 Carl Lewis made only a cameo appearance in the long jump. He raced down TRACK AND the runway once, leaped a couple of inches beyond 27 feet, far enough to qualify comfortably for the final, then left the Coliseum to rest on, and for, FIELD his laurels. Edwin Moses, a graduate of Morehouse University with a degree in physics, settled for a costarring role in the 400-meter hurdles. He did the physical work. He won the event for the 105th straight time, a flawless victory that was never in doubt; he broke 48 seconds for the 28th time, a feat the rest of the world had accomplished only five times; and he ran only a tenth of a second slower than he ran in 1976 when, at the age of 20, he won the gold medal in Montreal. He joined Paavo Nurmi in history, the only runners to win the same individual Olympic event twice—eight years apart. Danny Harris, an American teenager, came in second, and Harald Schmid, a West German veteran, the last man to defeat Moses, in 1977, finished third. Moses costarred not with his rivals, but with his lovely West German wife, Myrella. She did the emotional work. As the race approached, and the tele- vision camera zoomed in on her, she displayed every nuance of feeling from anxiety to anguish. She cried. She trembled. She buried her face in her hands. Myrella knew, and she showed, much more than he did, how much the race meant to her husband. -

http://www.epgn.com/arts-and-culture/features/13236-live-from-new-hope-television-icons-take-the- stage-in-bucks-county-productions March 29, 2018 By Larry Nichols Stars from classic and beloved television shows and film will star in a pair of theatrical shows at the Bucks County Playhouse. The first up is Emmy-winning actor and television icon Ed Asner, starring in “A Man and His Prostate,” a one-man show written by Philadelphia native and nine-time Emmy winner Ed Weinberger. Based on a real experience, the stage comedy is an unflinching and heartwarming examination of Weinberger’s encounter with pain, relief and the retrieval of his manhood when his vacation in Italy takes an unexpected turn after he is rushed to a hospital for prostate-cancer surgery. Faced with an operation he doesn’t want, in a medical system he doesn’t understand, he decides he won’t take any of life’s injustices sitting down. “It’s wonderfully funny,” Asner told PGN about the show, running March 30-April 1. “It’s written beautifully enough and we keep them entertained the whole time. Women are the hardest laughers of all.” Asner said that while the show overflows with humor, it also touches on some less-than-pleasant facts about prostate cancer. “The salient point is, a man dies of prostate cancer in this country every 16 minutes.” Asner has portrayed a wide range of characters, both comedic and dramatic, throughout his long and storied career, ranging from kind-hearted souls to irrepressible scoundrels. Asner said he’s never shied away from taking roles that are the opposite of his personality. -

RELEASE EMBARGOED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 7, 2012 PRESS CONTACT: James Ford 972-865-2239, Ext. 6 [email protected] ACTRESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST MEREDITH BAXTER TO KEYNOTE SOLD-OUT 31ST ANNUAL BLACK TIE DINNER DALLAS — (September 7, 2012) — Meredith Baxter, acclaimed actress, producer and advocate for women’s and human rights and breast cancer research, will keynote the 31st annual Black Tie Dinner, co- chairs of the event announced today. The sold-out event is the largest one-night GLBT black-tie fundraiser in the nation. This year’s dinner will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel. Baxter recently came out as a lesbian on national television during an interview with Matt Lauer on The Today Show and in an interview in People Magazine. She also signed a deal with Broadway Books to write a candid and revealing memoir of her eventful personal and professional life. “Meredith Baxter is a champion of women’s rights and devotes much of her time speaking out on issues about which she is passionate,” said Black Tie Dinner Co-Chair Chris Kouvelis. “Her life experiences reflect our theme for this year’s dinner: ‘Affair of the Heart.’ Every cause that Meredith involves herself with is an affair of her heart in every way.” Noted for her accessible portrayals of intelligent, independent women who struggle with the challenges before them, Baxter achieved early success with a string of television hits, including the CBS situation comedy Bridget Loves Bernie; the critically acclaimed ABC drama Family, for which she received an Emmy nomination; and, most notably, the long-running and perennially popular NBC sitcom Family Ties, in which she starred in the role of Elyse Keaton.
