Utilizing traditional community knowledge as a guiding framework and a qualitative inquiry guided by Indigenous research ethics and Anishinaabe protocols, open-ended interviews were conducted with three key informants and six young people who resided on-reserve during schooling years to discuss their educational experiences, needs and concerns. Based on these interviews, this study brings First Nations student voices and experiences to the forefront to show that on-reserve First Nations high school completion is influencedby significant challenges that are related to the trauma and history of colonization in Canada. F orrnerstudents discussed concerns and challenges in the intertwined areas of the school, family, community, and culture. The research reflections reported in this study prompted the development of a framework for a partnershipmodel of educational support which incorporates the Anishinaabe Seven Grandfather Teachings.

Come Along was created by Theatre Department students as a means to interact with a live audience during these pandemic times. Steeped in magical realism, the play presented themes of transgression and transformation. It featured original musical compositions by Music Department students Anika Zak and Connor Stewart. The cast included Kaydence Banga, Bronwen Bente, Benjamin Matity, Macey Hay, Tianna Chorney, Owen Westerlund, Billie Liskowich, Brad McDougall, Jadav Cyr and Jiness Helland. Stage management was by Rachel Butt, assisted by Erik Lillico. Music Department students Anthony Merkel, Joshua Stewart and Nathan Syrnick provided the music. The sold-out show had to close early due to more stringent COVID-19 health measures. Despite the early closure, Media, Art and Performance faculty member Shannon Holmes congratulated the cast and crew and said the experience was a magical, playful romp of a fairy tale for grown-ups.     Joint statement calling for sanctioning of Chinese and Hong Kong officials and protection for Hong Kongers at risk of political persecution We, the undersigned, call upon the Government of Canada to take action in light of the mass arrests and assault on civil rights following the unilateral imposition of the new National Security Law in Hong Kong. Many in Hong Kong fear they will face the same fate as the student protestors in Tiananmen Square, defenders’ lawyers, and millions of interned Uyghurs, Tibetans, and faith groups whose rights of free expression and worship are denied. We urge the Government of Canada to offer a “Safe Harbour Program” with an expedited process to grant protection and permanent residency status to Hong Kongers at risk of political persecution under the National Security Law, including international students and expatriate workers who have been involved in protest actions in Canada. Furthermore, Canada must invoke the Sergei Magnitsky Law to sanction Chinese and Hong Kong officials who instituted the National Security Law, as well as other acts violating human rights; and to ban them and their immediate family members from Canada and freeze their Canadian assets. Canada needs to work closely with international allies with shared values to institute a strong policy toward China. It is time for Canada to take meaningful action to show leadership on the world stage.     Brief to the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage Nurturing Media Vitality in Quebec’s English-speaking Minority Communities Presented by the Quebec Community Groups Network April 12, 2016 Introduction The Quebec Community Groups Network, or QCGN, is a not-for-profit representative organization. We serve as a centre of evidence-based expertise and collective action. QCGN is focused on strategic issues affecting the development and vitality of Canada’s English linguistic minority communities, to which we collectively refer as the English-speaking community of Quebec. Our 48 members are also not-for-profit community groups. Most provide direct services to community members. Some work regionally, providing broad-based services. Others work across Quebec in specific sectors such as health, and arts and culture. Our members include the Quebec Community Newspaper Association (QCNA). English-speaking Quebec is Canada’s largest official language minority community. A little more than 1 million Quebecers specify English as their first official spoken language. Although 84 per cent of our community lives within the Montreal Census Metropolitan Area, more than 210,000 community members live in other Quebec regions. Media Landscape English-speaking Quebecers have consistently signalled that access to information in their own language is both a need and a priority (CHSSN-CROP survey, various years). This may seem a bit of a contradiction in a world awash in English language information through CNN, Time magazine and Hollywood movies galore. The important nuance is that English- speaking Quebecers need information in their own language about their own local and regional communities, something that is increasingly hard to access on a consistent basis in a context of the francization of daily life in Quebec and the demise of traditional community media.
