Tchaikovsky Competition 1982 a Diary by Peter Donohoe1
TCHAIKOVSKY COMPETITION 1982 A DIARY BY PETER DONOHOE1 1 The footnotes in this diary are restrospective notes from 2012 – 30 years later... 08 June 1982 Recital at Charlotte Mason College in Ambleside in the British Lake District Program: Tchaikovsky Sonata 2 in G Major (1st Movement) Tchaikovsky November (from The Seasons) Tippett Sonata 2 Prokofiev Sonata 6 ---- Scriabin Etude Op65/3 Chopin Etude Op10/8 Rachmaninov Etude Tableau Op39/5 E flat Minor Bach Prelude and Fugue Book 2 No. 3 Flierkovsky – Prelude and Fugue in G minor Stravinsky Three Movements from Petrushka A very nice, but knowing guy came up to me after the concert, and said “That was a very unusual program. It is almost as if you are preparing to enter the Tchaikovsky Competition.” I asked him to keep it under his hat – it is never good for people to know in advance of your competition efforts, in case it doesn’t work out. Set off home at 11.00 p.m. The car –a Vauxhall Viva borrowed from my parents-in-law – broke down after about 10 miles of a 120 mile journey to my in-laws on the Wirral. Still in the Lake District countryside. The weather was appallingly wet. I had to get to the Wirral, and then the next morning to Manchester for an early flight to London to connect with the Aeroflot flight to Moscow. 09 June 1982 Thank God for the AA Relay service. They got me to the Wirral in the cab of one of their trucks, with the car on the back. -

YOUR O.A.T. ADVENTURE TRAVEL PLANNING GUIDE® The Baltic Capitals & St. Petersburg 2022 Small Groups: 8-16 travelers—guaranteed! (average of 13) Overseas Adventure Travel ® The Leader in Personalized Small Group Adventures on the Road Less Traveled 1 Dear Traveler, At last, the world is opening up again for curious travel lovers like you and me. And the O.A.T. Enhanced! The Baltic Capitals & St. Petersburg itinerary you’ve expressed interest in will be a wonderful way to resume the discoveries that bring us so much joy. You might soon be enjoying standout moments like these: What I love about the little town of Harmi, Estonia, is that it has a lot of heart. Its residents came together to save their local school, and now it’s a thriving hub for community events. Harmi is a new partner of our Grand Circle Foundation, and you’ll live a Day in the Life here, visiting the school and a family farm, and sharing a farm-to-table lunch with our hosts. I love the outdoors and I love art, so my walk in the woods with O.A.T. Trip Experience Leader Inese turned into something extraordinary when she led me along the path called the “Witches Hill” in Lithuania. It’s populated by 80 wooden sculptures of witches, faeries, and spirits that derive from old pagan beliefs. You’ll go there, too (and I bet you’ll be as surprised as I was to learn how prevalent those pagan practices still are.) I was also surprised—and saddened—to learn how terribly the Baltic people were persecuted during the Soviet era. -

Zaryadye Park, Glass Grid Shell Roof

Chesnokov b a Malishev Engineers, United Kingdom, [email protected] b Glass Research Institute, Russia, [email protected] This paper will describe the design, detailing, testing and construction of the structural glass beams which make up the load bearing grid shell structure of the newly built Zaryadye Park in Moscow, Russia. The canopy structure is situated short distance from Red Square and the Kremlin. Structural glass beams, 72 in total, are connected into the main undulating steel grid shell structure which measures approximately 120m long and 60m wide. The beams themselves vary in length according to the geometry but are generally 3m long, 0.2m deep. The beams meet each other and the main steel structure at bespoke stainless steel nodes, and are topped by triangular glass roof panels. The glass beams were designed to accommodate Moscow’s extreme weather conditions, with drifted snow loads of up to 350 kg/m2. Differential movement of the main structure was another challenge for the design team, and required sophisticated linear analysis with over 150 load combinations. The resulting movements called for further development of the nodal connections and non-linear analysis of their performance. Due to a lack of legislation covering structural glass in Russia a so called ‘Special Technical Standard’ was required. -

New Perspectives for Landscape Architecture in Russia – Park Zaryadye in Moscow
Scientific Journal of Latvia University of Agriculture Landscape Architecture and Art, Volume 11, Number 11 New perspectives for landscape architecture in Russia – Park Zaryadye in Moscow Nickolay Vladimirovich Kasyanov, Scientific Research Institute of Theory of Architecture and Urban Planning (NIITIAG), Moscow, Russia Abstract. The article considers a recent large-scale landscape-architectural experiment in the historical centre of Moscow. Zaryadye district, mentioned since the XII century, has a rich history, and the most dynamic changes occurred in the XX century, when historical buildings were demolished and several architectural projects of Soviet gigantomania were subsequently tried to realize in this area. By 2010 this territory in the centre of the Moscow turned into a wasteland. By September 2017 a landscape-architectural park was created here according to the project of the American firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, which won the competition. The park implements an artificial relief, in which a miniature display of different Russian landscapes is integrated with buildings of various cultural purposes. As a result, the sudden transformation of a considerable territory near the Kremlin appeared, and new unexpected and interesting visual landscapes opened. One of the goals is to present a new park to landscape architects and researchers. Keywords: landscape architecture, urban landscape, landscape change, multifunctional park, Moscow, park "Zaryadye" Introduction The work was carried out to explore a new figures in landscape architecture in XX century. landscape architectural artifact in the centre of He was an environmentalist, professor, and an Moscow.
