Fremd erscheint uns nur das, was wir nicht kennen. Daher ist es heute umso wichtiger, hinaus zu schauen in die Welt und die Menschen kennen zu lernen, von denen wir meinen, dass sie Fremde sind. Dabei können wir Überraschendes lernen: Leidenschaft, Neugierde und der Wunsch geachtet und geliebt zu werden, vereint uns wie eine große Familie. 5 Welcome to India welcome to the world of film

Only what we do not know appears foreign to us. It is all the more important nowadays to look out at the world and get to know the people we think of as foreign. There are many surprising lessons to be learned: Passion, curiosity, and the desire for respect and love unites us all – like a big family. 6

OLIVER MAHN Das Indische Filmfestival Stuttgart ist mehr denn je Zeichen der intensiven Beziehungen zwischen Indien und Deutschland, die durch ganz verschiedene Kooperationen und Partnerschaften belebt werden. Dazu gehört die seit 1968 bestehende Städtepartnerschaft zwischen Stuttgart und Mumbai, die in diesem Jahr ihr 50-jähriges Bestehen feiert.

Parallel dazu feiert das Indische Filmfestival mit seiner 15. Ausgabe ein klei- nes Jubiläum. Seit 2004 haben wir rund 800 Filme einem interessierten Publikum nähergebracht und gezeigt, wie sich die indische Gesellschaft im Spannungsfeld zwischen Tradition und Moderne verändert. Eine Verände- rung, die nicht ohne Konflikte vor sich geht und damit Stoff für unzählige weitere Film-Geschichten bietet.

An dieser Stelle sei allen Förderern, Partnern, Sponsoren, Freunden und den großartigen Filmemacherinnen und Filmemachern aus Indien für die wun- dervollen Jahre der Zusammenarbeit Dank gesagt. Jubiläen sind aber auch dazu da, mit einer kurzen Rückschau Anlauf für die Aufgaben der Zukunft und der nächsten Festival-Jahre zu nehmen. 1. More than ever, the Indian Film Festival Stuttgart clearly indicates the intensi- ty of the relations between India and Germany, invigorated by a variety of col- laborations and partnerships. This includes the the city partnership between Stuttgart and Mumbai established in 1968 and celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

At the same time, the Indian Film Festival has an anniversary to celebrate as well: its 15th edition. Since 2004, we have presented around 800 films to in- terested audiences and shown how Indian society is changing, torn between tradition and modernity. These changes are not without conflict, and thus a never-ending source for film plots.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters, partners, spon- sors, friends, and the great filmmakers from India for the wonderful years of cooperation. An anniversary is also the time to take a quick look back, and then get ready for future tasks and Festival years.
