CARDIGAN MART CHRISTMAS FATSTOCK REPORT 7TH DECEMBER 2015 A full ringside of buyers and farmers were present to watch this years’ Champion beast enter the ring to go under the hammer. The cattle section was judged by Messrs Rees of Penanty and the Championship was awarded to Dylan and Enfys Davies of Troedrhiw Fach with an impressive 535 kilo BB heifer which sold at £3.65k. Taking the Reserve Championship was a 510 kilo BB steer again from Dylan and Enfys which sold at £2.90k, both animals were bought by the judge Mr. Llew Rees of Preseli Bluestone Meats. The lamb classes were judged by our regular buyer Mr. Eric Lewis of St Merryn Meats, not an easy task but 5 lambs weighing 45 kilos caught the eye of the judge and the Championship was awarded to Tom Coney and Family of Lower End Town, Lampeter Velfrey which later sold at £100 and was bought by Mr. Llew Rees of Preseli Bluestone Meats Ltd. In Reserve were 44.5 kilo lambs from Mrs. Tomkinson of Brynyrefail, Oakford which realised £88 and were bought by local butcher Dewi James & Co, Cardigan. In the lighter weight section first prize was awarded to Dylan and Enfys Davies of Troedrhiw Fach with their 38.5 kilo lambs which were sold to the judge Mr. Eric Lewis. J. J. Morris would like to thank all our regular producers and buyers for their continued support throughout the year, 2015 has not been the greatest of 12 months for those involved with the farming industry. Topping at 222p and £100/head were the Champion pen of lambs from Coney, Lower End Town which were bought by Mr. Llew Rees of Preseli Bluestone Meats Ltd. CULL SHEEP (93): Prices topped at £92.50 for a ram from Whittal-Williams, Cwm Farm; other leading prices at £85.50 for ewes from Morris, Pencwarre who also sold at £78; £85 for a ewe from Whittal-Williams, Cwm Farm; £84 for a ewe from Organ, 1 Brodewi; £83.50 for a ewe from I.G Innovations Ltd, Gernos; £83.50 for ewes from James, Gilfach. FAT CATTLE (14): It was lovely to see such quality animals on display a true credit to all producers who had taken the time and effort to prepare the show cattle and a full ringside of regular buyers guaranteed excellent buyer support. Leading the fatstock prices was the Overall Champion a cracking 535 kilo BB heifer from Davies, Troedrhiw Fach which peaked at an incredible £3.65/kg and £1952/head which was bought by the judge Mr. Llew Rees of Preseli Bluestone Meats Ltd. The same vendor took the Reserve Championship with a 510 kilo BB steer which sold at £2.90 realising £1479 which was also purchased by the judge Mr. Llew Rees of Preseli Bluestone Meats. Other leading prices at: £2.60 and £1898/head for a 730 kilo Lim steer from Jones, Blaenpant; £2.50 and £1612/head for a 645 kilo BB steer from Davies, Troedrhiw Fach; £2.49 and £1506/head for a 605 kilo Blonde steer from Coney, Lower End Town; £2.40 and £1440/head for a 600 kilo Blonde steer from Hickin, Talarwen. STORE CATTLE (50): Peaking at £1120 was a 19mth AA steer from Vaughan & Sons, Fagwrgoch, the same vendor also sold 19mth Charolais steers at £1115 and £1100; other leading prices at £1030 for a 27mth Montbeliarde steer from Hodson, Cefngranod; £1030 for a 27 mth Lim steer from Lewis & Son, Tyriet; £1020 for 22-24mth AA steers from Jenkins, Gwelfor; £1020 for a 28 mth Hereford steer from Thomas, Glandwr Ceibwr who also sold a 35mth old Holstein steer at £915. Heifers topped at £815 for a 34mth Hereford from Thomas, Glandwr Ceibwr. BARREN COWS (26): Peaking at £800 was a 710 kilo Charolais from Jones & Sons, Dyffrynsaith; other leading prices at £770 for an 820 kilo H/Fr from Davies, Brynsiriol who also sold an 830 kilo H/Fr at £760; £755 for an 810 kilo H/Fr from Griffiths Bros Ltd, Tafarnybugail; £730 for an 825 kilo H/Fr from Jones & Sons, Dyffrynsaith; £700 for an 810 kilo H/Fr from Davies & Son, Hafod who also sold an 840 kilo H/Fr for the same money. CALVES (39): Topping the day’s prices at £395 was a BB heifer from Shepherd, Garnwen; other leading prices at £390 for an AA bull from Thomas, Glandwr Ceibwr who also sold a Hereford heifer at £240; £290 for a BB bull from Thomas, Ciliau Ganol who also sold a BB heifer at £202; £235 for a Hereford bull from Williams, Treale. The best dairy bred bulls sold at £86 from Parkes, Pengaer. J. J.
