www.ijird.com August, 2018 Vol 7 Issue 8 ISSN 2278 – 0211 (Online) Succession Under Esan Customary Law in Nigeria: Grounds for Disinheriting an Heir from Inheriting His Deceased Father’s Estate under Esan Customary Law Paul Okhaide Itua Senior Lecturer, Department of Commercial and Industrial Law, Ambrose Alli University, Nigeria Abstract: In Nigeria, there are three main ethnic / tribal groups; these are Hausa - Fulani, Igbo and Yoruba. Apart from these major ethnic groups, there are about 371 (three hundred and seventy-one) other ethnic groups with diverse languages and phonological structures, which are some time noticeable even within the same socio cultural setting. Majority of these ethnic groups share a lot of historical and deep cultural relationship between them as evidence mostly in the application of customary law that regulate their private life on one hand and the relationship that exist between them on the other hand. Apart from these rules of customary law, the common law and statutory law equally plays a major role in the regulation of these relationships. Some time these rules of customary law are subjected to certain test as prescribed by the common law and the statute in other to determine their validity and applicability. These regulatory mechanisms, also apply to the people that constitute Esan ethnic group. They presently occupy Edo Central Senatorial District consisting of five local government areas in Edo State of Nigeria. Historically they share cultural relationship with the Edos in the area of customary law, however with some noticeable differences in its application in certain areas. One of such area is succession. -

Manners, 2019 Abstract This thesis interrogates the suppression of the enslaved spiritual practice, Obeah, through African slavery in the British Caribbean from 1650-1834. Obeah is a syncretic spiritual practice derived from West African religious epistemologies. Practitioners of Obeah invoked the spiritual world for healing, divination, and protection. What is more, under the constant threat of colonial violence, they practiced Obeah for insurrectionary purposes. This thesis reveals and contextualizes the many ways in which Obeah faced cultural suppression at the hands of religious, colonial, and imperial authorities as a means to comply with and respond to sociopolitical conflicts occurring within the British Empire. British writers conceived of Obeah as ‘ignorant’ superstition and used this against Africans as justification for their subjugation by the British empire. Furthermore, this project traces the development of the English concern for Obeah alongside their pre- existing conceptions of magic and religion, which influenced the ways in which British colonists confronted African practitioners. ii Dedication For my grandparents, Claus and Linda. -

However, the effort of some historians in writing the history of Nigerian minority ethnic groups during the pre-colonial Era is far from being complete. A great deal in this aspect, especially that of the minorities that experienced invasions and subjugation in the hands of the larger societies is yet to be achieved to fill the gaps in our knowledge of minority history. It is against this background that this paper discuses Nupe invasion of Esanland of present Edo State and its Socio-political impact. Foreword erna brodber One afternoon when I was six and in standard 2, sitting quietly while the teacher, Mr. Grant, wrote our assignment on the blackboard, I heard a girl scream as if she were frightened. Mr. Grant must have heard it, too, for he turned as if to see whether that frightened scream had come from one of us, his charges. My classmates looked at me. Which wasn’t strange: I had a reputation for knowing the answer. They must have thought I would know about the scream. As it happened, all I could think about was how strange, just at the time when I needed it, the girl had screamed. I had been swimming through the clouds, unwillingly connected to a small party of adults who were purposefully going somewhere, a destination I sud- denly sensed meant danger for me. Naturally I didn’t want to go any further with them, but I didn’t know how to communicate this to adults and ones intent on doing me harm. -

PLATOFF* Introduction The field of vexillology is, by nature, a multidisciplinary one. It is difficult to understand the significance of an individual flag or group of flags without exam- ining the context within which those objects were created and are used. This paper will present a case study of a multidisciplinary investigation of one type of flags. Haitian Vodou flags (drapo Vodou) are little known to vexillologists, but have been studied by scholars in the fields of art, anthropology, African-American studies, and other disciplines. An investigation of prior scholarship from these areas demon- strates that this category of flags is not only significantly different than the flags usually examined by vexillologists, but they also have much to teach us about the study of flags as a multidisciplinary exercise. There are several books that are focused on Vodou flags. Patrick Arthur Polk, a prolific researcher on the topic, has produced a colorful and informative book titled Haitian Vodou Flags (1999). Historiography. Rural. Integration. Nationalism ABSTRACT This paper examines Esanland in the context of modern development planning in Nigeria. It interrogates the problem of planning without development in Esanland and Nigeria. The paper adopts the qualitative research method to explain the phenomenon of rural underdevelopment obstructing Nigeria’s economic development. It finds that, since Nigeria attained independence in 1960, there has been no scarcity of development planning in the country. But there is a stark paradoxical absence of commensurate economic development. This critical review of planning in Nigeria identified economic dysfunctionalism, resources diffusionism and ethnic politics as the bane of plan implementation and rural development. Therefore, using the economy of Esanland as a case study, this paper engages with how these factors interface to undermine and disconnect rural economies. It concludes that rural economic development-oriented planning and dispassionate implementation of plans are developmental imperatives for pre-empting development planning in Nigeria from being a waste of time. Orisha Worship and "Jesus Time": Rethinking African Religious Conversion in the Nineteenth-Century Caribbean Rosanne Marion Adderley Tulane University On a February afternoon in 1994, in the village of Caratal in south- central Trinidad, a seventy-eight year old woman-the great granddaughter of nineteenth-century free African immigrants-used the phrase "Jesus' time" to explain her own devotion to Christian Pentecostalism rather than the African- derived orisha worship brought to the Caribbean by her forebears, and con- tinued by many of her neighbors to the present day. Irene Joseph seemed to argue that, at least for her, the time of African religious beliefs had passed. In earlier years, she had in fact pursued Trinidad's African-derived religion, some- times called "Shango," but in more recent times also widely referred to as "orisha worship."' Joseph would later explain that, as an older woman, she had met a Pentecostal minister and some of his followers during a stay in hospital. Having had a poor prognosis from her medical doctors, she became convinced that the prayers of this minister had restored her health. Thus she had converted to his particular religious group.2 She still remembered well the various "Shango" or "orisha" beliefs and practices and did not speak of them with any regret or criticism. Despite what official Pentecostal doctrine might teach, Joseph gave no hint that she viewed her former African-derived religion as either heathen or in any way bad. At most, she seem to imply on occasion that the orisha worship might have less power than her new-found faith-at least in the late twentieth century! But on the whole, Joseph seemed to inter- pret her conversion to Pentecostalism as a kind of linear move from one form of religious or supernatural practice to another, neither condemning that which she claimed to have left behind nor over valorizing that which she newly em- braced. -
