Prior to coming to Boise State, Ihmels spent the previous six seasons (2007-13) as the head coach of the cross country COREY and track and field programs at his alma mater, Iowa State. The two-time Big 12 Conference Cross Country Coach of the IHMELS Year enjoyed similar success with the Cyclones:

After two years at the helm of the Boise State track and field and 6 Top-10 Team Finishes at the cross country programs, head coach Corey Ihmels and the Broncos NCAA Championships have steadily climbed the national ranks along with establishing themselves as a force in the Mountain West. Below is a list of some 38 Individual Big 12 Champions of the program’s accomplishments in Ihmels’ two seasons at Boise State: 400+ Big 12 All-Conference Honorees

1 Individual National Champion In addition to his accomplishments on the Big 12 and NCAA Emma Bates (2014) – 10,000m level, Ihmels helped two athletes at Iowa State compete in the 2012 Summer Olympics: 2 Mountain West Athlete of the Year Awards Emma Bates (2x, 2013 and 2014) - Lisa (Koll) Uhl competed for the United States and took 13th (31:12.80) in the 10,000m. 3 Individual National Runner-ups - Guor Marial competed as an Independent Olympic Athlete Emma Bates (2014) – XC and took 47th (2:19.32) in the marathon.
