I conducted interviews with leaders in eight of the largest mosques in Norway, and asked them about their religious and political world views. Specifically I tried to explore the relationship between what they regard as the ideal Islamic system, and the political changes they want to see in Norway and their Muslim countries of origin. My main finding is that all the informants regard the Norwegian political system as a good system, and view the current situation in most of the Muslim world as bad. On an ideological level, however, they relate to the Norwegian political system in different ways. I construct a four-fold typology in which all the informants fit: The secularists want a secular democratic state in both Norway and their Muslim home country. The Muslim democrats want liberal democracy in both Norway and their country of origin. -

MOHAMMAD ARKOUN’S STUDY OF THE QURAN Katharina Völker* This exploration into Arkoun's stances on the Quran looks onto the genesis of the Quran, the notion of the Quran as the 'deliverer of truth', and with that, its significance for the 'being in the world' of Muslim societies. I will also point out some crucial difficulties in the study of Arkoun's views on the Quran as well as their implications for the study of Islamic cultures. Trained at the University of Algiers (Faculty of Philology) he ventured off to lecture Arab language and literature at the Sorbonne. His engagement with philosophy and sociology led in 1968 to his PhD at the Sorbonne through a work on Ibn Miskawayh's ethics.1 He lectured at several universities in Europe and the USA and remained emeritus professor of history and Islamic thought at the Sorbonne until his death. Mohammad Arkoun was furthermore scientific director of the journal ARABICA (Brill: Leiden), a member of the 'French National Committee for Ethics, Weltanschauung and Health', and in 2002 a member of the international jury of the UNESCO Prize for the promotion of peace. From 2003 onwards, he held a chair within the 'Committee for Laicism in France' and was awarded the Ibn Rushd Prize for Freedom of Thought the same year in Germany. -

However, it remains rather opaque how God’s compassion can be fully explained in terms of comparative theology. How can Muslims relate to God’s compassion? What role does God’s compassion precisely play in the Quranic revelation and the daily practice of Muslims? Laying the Foundation Islamic theology currently faces a challenging phase of its ongoing development. Whereas the global Muslim community is engaging global modernity in the political, cultural, economic and social arenas, Islamic theology remains—aside from individual examples few and far between—somewhat reluctant to participate in new forms of comparative discourses. He is one of the great upholders of Phenomenological tradition in the Muslim World. He is of the view that the Phenomenological interpretation may convert the Islamic disciplines into”rigorous Sciences” with strong and vigourous methods and terminologies of their own. Hanafi identifies four such rational disciplines for the application of his Phenomenological method, that is,a- Philosophy (Ḥikmat ),b- ‘Ilm Uṣūl al-fiqh (Foundations of the Religion),c- ‘Ilm Uṣūl al-fiqh ( Foundations of the Jurisprudence) and d- Mysticism ( taṣawwuf ). He, however, chose the third and fourth in the above mentioned to apply his method. This paper intends to study in depth the application of Phenomenological method in the understanding and interpretation of Mysticism by Hanafi. His case study for the same is al-Ḥikma al-muta‘āliya fī al-asfār al- ‘aqlīya al-arba‘a by the legendary Muslim scholar Ṣadr Ad-dīn Ash- shīrāzī , better known as Mullā Ṣadrā 1 .The paper will discuss, Hanafi's method, its scope, application, legitimacy and subsequent results. -

SOCIAL APPROACH IN TAFSIR AL-QUR’AN PERSPECTIVE OF HASAN HANAFI Ade Jamarudin Fakultas Ushuluddin UIN Suska Riau [email protected] Abstract Hasan Hanafi states that a thorough revival in religious reforms affects social revolution and Muslims’ politics, interpretation methodologies are needed go beyond the textual and historical interpretations, which do not take al-Qur’an in a narrow space and time in Rasulullah period, Hasan Hanafi gave a social approach in interpreting the Qur’an (al- manhaj al-ijtima’i Fi at-Tafsir). With this interpretation, according to Hanafi, an exegete who want to find the meaning of al-Qur’an do not only deduce the meaning of the text, but on the contrary, can induce the real meaning into the text. Interpret according to Hasan Hanafi means looking for something, object focus. Interpreting is to find something new among language text. It uses thematic method that is characteristic of interpretation by the scientific paradigm, which expresses the subjectivity emphasis of commitment interests and interpreter objective socially.
