Your Select Committee was appointed during the Fourth Session of the Fifty-fourth Legislative Assembly by resolution of the House adopted December 18, 2001, and empowered to sit after prorogation of the session. This report is the result of your Committee’s public consultation and deliberations to explore acceptable and appropriate local governance models and regional service delivery structures, in response to three recommendations of the Minister’s Round Table on Local Governance. On behalf of the Committee, I wish to thank the many individuals and organizations who appeared before the Committee at the public hearings or submitted written briefs. As well, I wish to thank everyone who attended the hearings and took part in this important process. I also wish to thank the various individuals who provided assistance to the Committee, in particular, the resource person, Mr. Johnny St-Onge, for his invaluable advice and dedication throughout the process. Finally, I express appreciation to the members of the Committee and the Members of the Legislative Assembly who participated in the process, for their contribution in carrying out our mandate. More importantly, the Report and nine recommendations of the Select Committee reflect and respond to the insightful and beneficial feedback received from the many New Brunswickers who made their views known to the Committee. These recommendations reflect previous reports, more particularly the report of the Commission on Land Use and the Rural Environment (1993), the report of the Municipalities Act Review Panel (1999) and, of course, the report of the Minister’s Round Table on Local Governance (2001). The Report recognizes that New Brunswick’s rural and urban communities have changed and will continue to change, and that the local government system needs to be reorganized in a gradual manner in order to accommodate those changes. Building upon the customs and practices of citizens in unincorporated areas, some of the recommendations are targeted at laying the foundation for the gradual acquisition of local powers in unincorporated areas in order to strengthen the governance

    20 août 2018 – Telegraph Journal 5 RIDINGS THAT WILL DECIDE ELECTION ADAM HURAS LEGISLATURE BUREAU They are the ridings that the experts believe will decide the provincial election. “Depending on what happens in about five ridings, it will be a Progressive Conservative or Liberal government,” Roger Ouellette, political science professor l’Université de Moncton said in an interview. J.P. Lewis, associate professor of politics at the University of New Brunswick added: “It feels like the most likely scenario is a close seat count.” Brunswick News asked five political watchers for the five ridings to watch over the next month leading up to the Sept. 24 vote. By no means was there a consensus. There were 14 different ridings that at least one expert included in their top five list of battlegrounds that could go one way or another. “Right now, based on the regional trends, it’s really hard to call,” MQO Research polling firm vice president Stephen Moore said. Six ridings received multiple votes. The list is heavy with Moncton and Fredericton ridings. 20 août 2018 – Telegraph Journal Meanwhile, a Saint John riding and another in the province’s northeast were cited the most as runoffs that could make or break the election for the Liberals or the Progressive Conservatives. Gabriel Arsenault, political science professor at l’Université de Moncton 1. Saint John Harbour: “It was tight last time and (incumbent MLA Ed) Doherty screwed up, so I’m putting my bets on the Tories,” Arsenault said. The Progressive Conservatives called on Doherty, the former minister in charge of Service New Brunswick, to resign amid last year’s property tax assessment fiasco.

We still haven't reached our ultimate goal: pay equity legislation. However, thanks to our relentless efforts, the provincial government and the Legislative Assembly have taken pay equity seriously. They now recognize the existence of pay inequity – a victory in itself given that the topic was almost dead just a few years ago. In June 2005, because of our demands, the government released a five-year action plan to reduce the wage gap. This plan outlines four objectives to eliminate the wage gap between New Brunswick men and women. While one of the objectives of the plan is to increase the use of pay equity practices, it still only proposes voluntary measures. The Coalition is closely monitoring the implementation of the Wage Gap Action Plan. We are acting as a “watch dog” to make sure that pay equity is central to the plan, that women are involved, and that real progress is made.
