As a consequence, ongoing climate change is heavily impacting the stability of high altitude en vironments. Main effects are a reduced stability of rock slopes and moraines, growth of glacial lakes, outcrop of large quantities of unconsolidated and unvegetated glacial sediments, which can lead to ice and rock falls and avalanches, glacial outburst fl oods and debris flows. In this context, the Alcotra 2007 -2013 project n.56 GLARISKALP (“Glacial Risks in Western Alps”) has been promoted. Its focus is on past, present and potential instability phenomena in glacial and periglacial areas of Western Alps. I n the framework of the project, the contribution of CNR -IRPI refers to the Piedmont Region. The areas considered in the study are the main mountain groups of Marittime Alps (Clapièr, Corburant, Argentera), Cozie Alps (Monviso, Ambin) and Graie Alps(Rocciam elone, Levanne, and Piedmont side of Gran Paradiso). Traditional investigation techniques along with well -established and innovative geomatic technologies have been used. The CNR -IRPI contribution to the project, is: 1) a regional study of localisation and characterisation of glacial and periglacial areas, aimed to point out instability prone areas and typologies of expected natural instabilities; 2) a close examination of some sites, chosen according to problems and critical situations found in the previou s phase of the work. The results of the project will improve and enrich the knowledge about the impacts of climate change in high mountains and also supply methodologies for studying and moni toring alpine glacial and periglacial areas. Outcomes of this work will help public administrations to manage natural hazard assessment related to climate change. The Italian Glacier Inventory Glaciers are among the best terrestrial indicators of climate change and thus glacier inventories have attracted a growing, worldwide interest in recent years. In Italy, the first official glacier inventory was completed in 1925 and 774 glacial bodies were identified. As the amount of data continues to increase, and new techniques become available, there is a growing demand for computer tools that can efficiently manage the collected data. The Research Institute for Geo-hydrological Protection of the National Research Council, in cooperation with the Departments of Computer Science and Earth Sciences of the University of Turin, created a database that provides a modern tool for storing, processing and sharing glaciological data. The database was developed according to the need of storing heterogeneous information, which can be retrieved through a set of web search queries. The Database’s architecture is server-side, and was designed by means of open source software . The website interface, simple and intuitive, was intended to meet the needs of a distributed public: through this interface, any type of glaciological data can be managed, specific queries can be performed, and the results can be exported in a standard format. The use of a relational database to store and organize the large variety of information about Italian glaciers collected over the last hundred years constitutes a significant step forward in ensuring the safety and accessibility of such data. Altogether 1,102 specimens were collected and determined (180 queens, 227 males, and 695 workers) belonging to 30 species - two of which are represented by two subspecies - which account for 70% of those known in Italy, demonstrating the particular value of the area examined with regard to environmental quality and biodiversity. Bombus soroeensis (F.), Bombus me- somelas Gerstaecker, Bombus ruderarius (Mueller), Bombus monticola Smith, Bombus pratorum (L.), Bombus lucorum (L.), Bombus terrestris (L.), and Bombus lapidarius (L.) can be considered predominant, each one representing more than 5% of the collected specimens, 12 species are rather common (1-5% of specimens) and the remaining nine rare (less than 1%). A list of col- lected specimens with collection localities and dates is provided. To illustrate more clearly the altitudinal distribution of the dif- ferent species, the capture locations were grouped by altitude. 83.5% of the samples is also provided with data on the plant on which they were collected, comprising a total of 52 plant genera within 20 plant families.

A list is provided of 174 carabid species from these valleys. Chorological and ecological notes about some species are also reported. RIASSUNTO - Il presente lavoro è il risultato di trent’anni di ricerche entomolo- giche sui Carabidi delle Valli di Lanzo (Torino). Viene presentato un elenco di 174 specie di Coleotteri Carabidi di queste valli. Vengono inoltre presentate alcune os- servazioni sulla corologia e sull’ecologia di alcune specie. INTRODUZIONE La presente nota intende sintetizzare in un lavoro di carattere faunistico la consistente mole di reperti e osservazioni relativi ai Coleotteri Carabidi ottenuta dagli autori in più di trent’anni di ricerche nelle Valli di Lanzo. Uno degli autori (Giuntelli), risiedendo nei pressi dell’imbocco, ha raccol- to materiale lungo i fondivalle sin dagli esordi in campo entomologico. L’altro autore, nel corso di numerose e ripetute escursioni sui monti del territorio in oggetto, ha effettuato indagini soprattutto sulla carabidofauna che ne popola gli orizzonti subalpino, alpino e altoalpino, utilizzando poi una parte dei dati raccolti in precedenti pubblicazioni (Bisio, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999a, 2000, 2002, 2005a, 2005b). Oltre ai reperti personali gli scriventi hanno avuto a disposizione i dati, piuttosto numerosi, desunti dalla letteratura. Three larvae of Scythis fiaviventrella (H.-S.) were found in Italy on Helianthemum apenninum (Miller) (Cistaceae) and two on Astragalus onobrychis (Linne) (Fabaceae). They were reared in the laboratory so that adult behavior could be studied immediately after eclosion. Courtship and mating are described for the first time; courtship was brief but mating lasted 6-7 hours. Both females remated after 48 hours. Oviposition was not observed. Notes on larval morphology and behavior are included. Additional key words: Helianthemum apenninum, Cistaceae, Astragalus onobry­ chis, Fabaceae, larvae. Even though much has been published about caterpillars and larval food plants of Scythrididae, numerous discrepancies exist in the obser­ vations published by different authors for the same species. These dis­ crepancies throw doubt on the supposed polyphagous habits and intra­ specific structural variation of the larvae, or both, of those species. Recent taxonomic and nomenclatural works (Bengtsson 1984, Jackh 1977,1978; Passerin d'Entn'wes 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980) based on close examination of adult specimens preserved in museum collections reveal that scythridids frequently have been misidentified. In some cases, the two sexes of the same species have been described under different specific names. Consequently, the previously published data about im­ matures and food plants of these species are unreliable. Additionally, there is no published account of the courtship and mating behavior of any scythridid species.
