This year’s Bruins will have a bit of a different look than the high-flying, athletic squad that Phillips sent out between the lines last season . “I don’t know if we’re more athletic than we were last year—but we have some good size . We’ve got big- bodied guys that are a little taller inside,” he said . “We’ve still got great athletes— II returns and we’ve definitely got some players who can get after it and play exciting basketball.” The Bruins return just three players that saw time on the floor from last year’s group and will have the services of a redshirt freshman as well . Sophomore guards Gary Payton II and Jaden Jackson will join sophomore forward Kurtis Toolson as second-year Bruins . “I have high expectations for the sophomores we’ve got coming back,” said Phillips . “We need Gary to continue to get better—we’ll definitely put more on his plate this year and have him pick up some of the scoring for us . All of our sophomores are expected to step up right away as it takes time for our freshmen to do so, get involved and learn what they’re capable of .” “I’ve been really happy with our freshmen,” he said . “They’ve got great attitudes and they’re working hard both in the classroom and on the floor. They just don’t know what they don’t know yet but they’re definitely eager to learn .” With the Bruins competing in perhaps the toughest junior conference in the nation, the young faces on the roster will need to get ready quickly. With storied programs like North Idaho Col- lege (NIC) and the College of Southern Idaho (CSI) in the SWAC, the margin for error in conference play is slim . “Our league is kind of the same every year . CSI is going to be really talented, NIC is loaded and I’d prob- ably say they’re the early front runner,” Phillips said . “Snow College is young, but they’ve brought in some good talent and are more athletic than they were last year . USU-Eastern has some good players coming back and brought in some great foreign recruits, so this year will be a battle in the conference schedule as always .” A tough test awaits the Bruins again in 2013-2014, but that doesn’t do much to deter the Bruin coaching staff and the team from holding high expectations . “I put it on our guys and on ourselves as coaches—if we don’t have high expectations than we’re in the wrong business . The program that’s been built here and hopefully we’re carrying forward is year in and year out to play for that conference, region and national championship,” said Phillips . “We don’t want to just be competing every fourth year or so for a trip to nationals, we want to be putting ourselves in a posi- tion every year to do that .”

She was the only woman considered in the Top 25 Most Influential People in Utah Sports. As the first woman in Utah to serve as athletic director for both men’s and women’s sports programs and the first to officiate in boy’s high school basketball games, she has been recognized as a standard- bearer among Utah sports figures. Norma graduated as a five-sport athlete from Brigham Young Uni- versity (BYU) in 1969 and went on to receive her Master’s Degree at the University of Utah . She started her coaching career at Davis High School and in 1975 went on to coach multiple sports at the University Tanya Schmidt of Utah . During her 14 years at the U of U, Norma was head volleyball Administrative Assistant coach for five years and assisted with women’s basketball and softball for one season . Since joining the Bruins in 1989, Norma has been at the helm of building both the SLCC athletic program and its facilities . Norma took a struggling ath- letic program that consisted of only two sports (Men’s and Women’s Basketball) and turned it into a successful and nationally competitive five-sport program. She oversaw the construction of the state-of-the-art Lifetime Activities Center and Bru- in Arena, as well as Bruin Baseball’s Cate Field and SLCC Softball’s Bruin Softball Field . Norma was awarded the Pioneers of Progress Award by the Days of ’47 Board of Directors in 2013 and was inducted into the U of U’s Crimson Club Hall of Fame Lisa Peshell AnneMarie Jensen in 2012 .
