That of the company’s founder (1898- 1944), that of the Régie Nationale des Usines Renault (RNUR), wholly owned by the French State (1945- 1995), and that of Renault SA (1995-present). Nevertheless, these three lives form a single experience, the life of a car manufacturer that has always deftly adapted to changing times, changing societies, and evolving economies. Over 120 years, Renault has stayed wholly in tune with the demands of an ever broader and more international clientele, remaining the beating heart of automotive life to fulfil those aspirations, measuring and analyzing societal changes in a mobility-loving world, where the freedom to move, to travel, to endeavor became increasingly essential. Renault’s longevity was built on the understanding of lifestyles and uses, the desire to make people the defining element in the worlds of automobiles and technology. Looking back through history, we can see that it is a vehicle forged by values, expressed through models that combine automotive passion, exploration, discovery, family, work, recreation…and emancipation. Ce succès n’est pas aperçu d’emblée par les constructeurs concurrents de Renault et par la presse automobile ou sportive, mais la Quatrième République naissante — l’adoption de la constitution par référendum est presque exactement contemporaine du Salon de l’Auto de 1946 — sent bien la carte à jouer : le véhicule nouveau va prouver les capacités industrielles de croissance d’une Régie nationale dont les statuts sont tout jeunes, montrer un visage neuf de la France et de Renault, et enfin assurer le progrès social du pays. Première véritable auto française d’évasion, petite puce de sympathie, gentille « motte de beurre », la 4 CV va offrir des plaisirs divers grâce à la première vitesse non synchronisée et au démarrage en seconde, elle sera une mine de plaisanteries pour les chansonniers radiophoniques, une source d’accidents par le capot, les portes avant, les arbres de roues arrière et la prise au vent, mais la 4 CV est la voiture du renouveau et une arme industrielle et commerciale essentielle pour Renault ! 1 Cf. -

Louis Renault himself had hired Emile Rédélé right at the beginning of the 20th Century. His son Jean always kept in his office at home, a small picture commemorating Szisz’s successes in the big, 13-litre Renault, assisted by his father. At the end of the First World War, at the request of Louis Renault, the young Emile Rédélé settled in Dieppe and opened a Renault dealership there in rue Thiers. He married Madeleine Prieur, and two years later, Jean-Emile-Amédée Rédélé was born on May 17, 1922. The couple subsequently had two further sons: Pierre, who was born in 1924, and Claude, in 1931. The family gained greater influence when Emile Rédélé married into his wife’s family and her cousins Jacques and Roger Prieur became practically inseparable from the three Rédélé brothers. -
