One of the Blessings of Retirement Is Being Able to Enjoy Watching the Children Going Past My Garden Daily to Schools Close to My Home

Benefice community newsletter for Tytherington, Rockhampton, and Tortworth

Volume 13 Issue 8 August 2016

One of the blessings of retirement is being able to enjoy watching the children going past my garden daily to schools close to my home. There is a sense of purpose as the youngsters hurry on with parents in their wake heading off to their various destinations. As I write the end of the academic year is very close – just days now before the holidays begin! This is the time of year when we all look forward to a bit of down time – leisure time! Even if people don’t actually go away, there is a different ‘feel’ in the air when children have time free from school activities. What do you think of when you say the word ‘leisure’? Me, I imagine sunny beaches with the waves lapping at the shore, sunshades, deckchairs, ice-cold drink in hand, and a ‘Jeeves’ who has clearly spent time in the gym coming at regular intervals to refill the glass. Perhaps you imagine a stroll or a ramble somewhere in the countryside, with the birds singing and the rabbits scurrying away as they hear your footsteps approaching, with the dog walking (a la dog training classes) obediently by your side. Why is it then that when we go to a leisure centre we jog in full of energy and enthusiasm, crawling out some time later looking (and prob- ably feeling) as if we have just been put through our paces by an unsympathetic sergeant major – with apologies to any nice sergeant–major reading this! So I ponder this word leisure – and I hasten to my concordance to see where the word leisure comes in the Bible – alas it is not there! Definitions I have come across to do with leisure nearly all refer to “time off” - time – ah, now that is different, because the Bible does have a lot to tell us about time. It gives plain common sense advice about our needs if we are to be fully alive people fulfilling our potential every day – in our working time as well as in our leisure time. It is so important for us all to have a distinction between time that is for us and time that we, of necessity, give to others – to family and to our work situ- ation. For Christians there is also the special time we need to spend with our God. Leisure time is part of God’s plan for us all and we are encouraged to make the most of this valuable commodity and take hold of opportunities it brings. So, do I use my leisure time well or am I in danger of being selfish and lazy? Do I have quality time for other peo- ple to build up my relationships - with family, with friends? Do I ensure that I have the time I need to fulfil who I am, so that I can then give to others? For all of us time is a bal- ancing act, but an important aspect of our lives to ponder. Enjoy some leisure time in the coming weeks! Sue Phillipson-Masters

THORNBURY LIBRARY SUMMER READING CHALLENGE 2016

Come and join The Big Friendly Read this summer - it wouldn’t be the same without you!

The Big Friendly Read, Summer Reading Challenge 2016 began in all South Libraries on 16 July and runs until 10 September. It’s fun, it’s friendly and best of all, it’s totally FREE.

All children have to do is read six library books over the summer, collecting special Big Friendly Read collector cards from some of Roald Dahl’s best-loved stories along the way, to get their medal and certificate.

More than 6,700 children took part in Record Breakers last summer. A parent of children who did said “My three children loved the reading challenge. I think it is a fantastic idea and gets kids reading through the summer.”

Libraries are also holding free activities throughout the holiday to help children complete the challenge. You won’t want to miss a thing - like Libraries on Facebook, follow @SouthGlosLibs on Twitter, visit your local library or visit www.southglos.gov.uk/libraries

Cromhall Parish Council Report for July 2016

The July meeting was held in the village hall on the 13th July 2016 and the published agenda was fully dis- cussed. The following is an update on issues.

There has been a good response from both the village shop and residents of Lygon Court to our appeal on the parking issues around the Townwell Play Areas. The Parish Council would like to thank those con- cerned for the prompt action in helping to minimise the risks to child safety.Cromhall Parish Council Report for July 2016 The poor visual condition of the Showman’s site was again discussed and dialogue is currently ongoing between South Gloucestershire Council and the current occupiers of the site to try to resolve these issues. Consultations: Councillors were briefed by Cllr. John O’Neill on the proposed merger of South Gloucestershire Council into a unitary body with the two other councils, BANES and Bristol in response to central government devolution proposals for local councils, North Somerset Council has voted to stay out- side of the devolution agreement. South Gloucestershire Council is consulting on the creation of a new West of England Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA), including how this combined authority would work and what it means. More information is available on the West of England devolution webpage: http:// www.westofenglanddevolution.co.uk/ The consultation runs from Monday 4 July 2016 until Monday 15 Au- gust 2016. Note: The devolution issue may have a major impact on local democracy so the Cromhall Parish Council would like to invite local people to the routine council meeting on the 10th August 2016 starting at 7:30 pm to hear your views. We will set aside extra time in the agenda for public participation so we can discuss the issues and record your views but would encourage everyone to make your thoughts known to the consultation which runs between the 4th July and the 15th August 2016. There is an online survey link at the above web link so have your say. There is a public consultation on the Oral Health Promotion Strategy 2016-2021 which runs until 20th July which we would like to make you aware of. Details at https://consultations.southglos.gov.uk/consult.ti/ oralhealthpromotion/consultationHome. There is a further consultation on a proposal to decommission the adult day services provided at the Turn- berries facility in Thornbury which will constitute the removal of a local care facility from the area so if you want to have ‘your’ say on this consultation, the link is https://consultations.southglos.gov.uk/consult.ti/ dayservices2016/consultationHome Speed Limit & Vehicle speeds through the Village: Speeding through the village continues to be an issue and the Parish Council is exploring ways to try to encourage speeding drivers to act responsibly be- fore there is a serious incident. Reducing the speed limit on the section of road approaching from the direction which is currently 50 MPH to 40 MPH, fitting more intermediate 30 MPH signs and con- tinuing police speed camera enforcements are all being considered. We have also contacted the new Po- lice & Crime Commissioner to highlight our concern on this issue. St Andrew’s School: As many of you will know keeping up pupil numbers at the school is essential to preserving this valuable part of our community. A lot of hard work is being done by the school staff and governors to maintain and improve standards at the school to obtain the highest possible OFSTED rating, so we would like local people to spread the message far and wide to encourage any spare school places to be taken up by the surrounding villages in order to even out the normal fluctuations in village children num- bers needing school places. To help keep the school ‘on the map’ we are proposing to put up some new sign posts to remind passers-by that the school is only a little way up Church Lane and is definitely open for business. Village Survey: We were hoping to publish the results of the Village Survey that was carried out in 2014 this month which we have turned into a Cromhall Village Plan 2016 but we have delayed publication for a couple of months in order to produce a concise, informative action plan to take forward the important issues identified. Finally we would like to remind residents that Cromhall Parish Council meets in the village hall on the sec- ond Wednesday of each month at 7:30 pm; the agenda is displayed on the village notice board and village shop and on www.cromhall.com/cromhall/cromhall-parish-council web site. Anyone can attend and there is an allotted section in the agenda for public consultation or comment so please do come along and support us if you can. Keith White, Cromhall Parish Council

VACANCY UPDATE - GOOD NEWS

We are delighted to welcome the Rev’d. Sue Phillipson-Masters, (Sue PM) as our interim minister for the CRoFTTBenefice. Bishop Rachel has appointed her to be on duty for Eucharist Services on two Sundays a month and also for pastoral care for most Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. She is also hoping to be able to do some home visiting for the housebound or sick. She will also be responsible for our spiritual guidance and this is not just for those who come to church, but anyone who feels they need to talk to someone and we can assure you that Sue is a good listener and adviser.

As the title 'interim minister' implies, this is a position that is intended to pave the way for a new form of 'Chaplaincy' care for the Benefice. It is hoped to be able to appoint two priests, probably recently retired, who feel that they have much still to offer, but are un- willing to take on the heavy duties of running five churches. The day to day administra- tion of the Benefice will continue as it has during the last year, with possibly some extra help in the office, but with lay people taking an active part in the organisation. The pat- tern of services will remain much the same until Christmas, when Sue, together with the Wardens and any other interested members, will review the whole rota.

We do hope that you will pray for Sue in her new responsibilities and I am sure we will enjoy her great energy and enthusiasm in the future.

Distraction burglars in Bristol and South Gloucestershire claiming to be from 'Age Concern'

Avon & Somerset Police have been in touch with Age UK about a recent scam where people are posing as ‘Age Concern’ staff to gain access to older people’s homes.

Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK said: “Criminals who target vulnerable older peo- ple are calculating thieves and can be very convincing. We would urge all older people not to open their door to someone unless they are absolutely sure of their identity. If you’re sus- picious or the caller won’t leave, call 999 and ask for the police. If someone is specifically concerned about the credentials of someone who claims to be from Age UK or one of our found- ing charities – Age Concern and Help the Aged – then we would also urge them to contact our free advice line for further advice on 0800 169 65 65. Our free guide Staying Safe can also be downloaded from www.ageuk.org.uk. “If you would prefer a paper copy of the ‘Staying Safe’ guide, you can get this from your local Age UK Office or charity shop.

“All local Age UK staff visiting older people in their homes are advised to take some form of iden- tification, such as an ID card, or visit by appointment only. All collectors for Age UK shops are required to carry Age UK ID cards and present them if requested.”

Martin Green, Chief Executive Officer at Age UK South Gloucestershire said: “This is a despica- ble crime and we would urge people to make sure they know what to do to stay safe in this sort of situation.

“I would want to reassure people that when we visit older people in their homes this is always done by appointment so they are expecting us. All local staff and volunteers must carry an ID card which they should show to the older person when visiting. If an ID card isn’t shown when asked, please don’t hesitate to close the door. If you’re suspicious or feel at risk, then call the police on 999 straight away.
