From the Desk of Fr. Connolly October 22, 2017 October: the Month of the Holy Rosary The Battle of Lepanto On October 7, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the yearly feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Known for several centuries by the alternate title of “Our Lady of Victory,” the feast day takes place in honor of a 16th century naval vic- tory which secured Europe against Turkish invasion. Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of the battle through a campaign to pray the rosary throughout Europe. In his 1883 encyclical Supremi Apostolatus Officio, Pope Leo XIII echoed the words of the oldest known Marian prayer (known in the Latin tradition as the Sub Tuum Praesidium) when he wrote, “It has always been the habit of Catholics in danger and in troublous times to fly for refuge to Mary. This devotion, so great and so confident, to the august Queen of Heaven has never shone forth with such brilliancy as when the militant Church of God has seemed to be endangered by the violence of heresy … or by an intolerable moral corruption, or by the attacks of powerful enemies.” Foremost among such attacks was the Battle of Lepanto, a perilous and decisive moment in European and world history. Troops of the Turkish Ottoman Empire had invaded and occupied the Byzantine Empire by 1453, bringing a large portion of the increasingly divided Christian world under a version of Islamic law. For the next hundred years, the Turks expanded their empire westward on land, and asserted their naval power in the Mediterranean. In 1565, they attacked Malta, envisioning an eventual invasion of Rome. The next year, three Catholic powers on the continent, Genoa, Spain, and the Papal States, formed an alliance called the Holy League, to defend their Christian civilization against Turkish invasion. Its fleets sailed to confront the Turks near the west coast of Greece on October 7, 1571. Crew members on more than 200 ships prayed the rosary in preparation for the battle, as did Christians throughout Europe, encouraged by the Pope to gather in their churches to invoke the Virgin Mary against the daunting Turkish forces. Pope Pius V was granted a miraculous vision of the Holy League’s stunning victory. Without a doubt, the Pope understood the significance of the day’s events, when he was eventually informed that all but 13 of the nearly 300 Turkish ships had been captured or sunk. He was moved to institute the feast now celebrated universally as Our Lady of the Rosary. HOLY LAND 2015 Monday 25th May 2015 On way to airport for flight to Holy Land. There's a mix of folks from many parishes but happy to report there's been no fighting......yet! Arrived safely without losing anyone or, strangely, wanting to lose anyone! 34 degrees temp. Straight to hotel for dinner and bed for a 6:30 am start. God have mercy on us! Tuesday 26th May 2015 Mass this morning in Church of The Nativity at St Joseph's altar, the place of his vision of the Angels telling him to flee to Egypt. Veneration of the 'Locus iste'. A need for Ecumenism here. After visit to Church of Ascension, Church of Pater Noster and the Dominus Flavit where Jesus wept over Jerusalem, we spent time looking at the old city seeing features that wouldn't be unfamiliar to Jesus. Then, down to the Garden of Gethsemane for a very emotive visit in baking heat. In short, a very striking first day with some profound silences. It must be gin o'clock now!! Wednesday 27th May 2015 Another early start to local co-operative that helps support around 50 Christian families. I've done my bit on behalf of the parish! All I'll say is: Make sure you're at Mass in a couple of weeks ........! Morning visits to Church of the Dormition of Our Lady and the Cenacle Room (Upper Room) on Mount Sion. Onto the Jewish Quarter which is full of American accents with a smattering of Hebrew. Mass beside the Cenacle. Afternoon visit to St Peter in Gallicantu, the place where Peter denied Jesus.

  • 2021 05 28 Grace-Notes-In-Miniature
Dear friends: As we anticipate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity on Sunday, and the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Monday, May is certainly going out with a fanfare. 1 The prayers dedicated to the Holy Trinity came into being as a response to the Arian Heresy which held that the Son of God was not eternal with the Father, but rather created by the Father in Time and therefore had to be subordinate. The Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 formally confirmed the doctrine of the Trinity and this is reflected in the Nicene Creed, where we state: I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father… In response to the continuation of Arianism, the Church Fathers introduced an Office for the Holy Trinity, and the Sacramentary of St Gregory the Great (590 – 604) included such an Office and the Preface of the Trinity. In the early fourteenth century, Pope John XXII designated the Sunday after Pentecost as the feast of the Holy Trinity and we continue that practice today. Until the decision was made to move the celebration of Corpus Christi to the following Sunday, that Solemnity would have been celebrated on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday. In the home, Trinity Sunday has been celebrated with triangular pastries or rolls shaped like clover leaves or shamrocks. You can find a liturgy for use at home while we wait out our Covid-19 separation from our churches at https://aleteia.org/2020/06/06/how-to-celebrate-trinity- sunday-at-home/ 2 On Monday we celebrate the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, remembering the story of a newly pregnant Mary making a journey into the hill country to visit her older cousin, Elizabeth, who, after many years of longing, is in her sixth month of pregnancy with the child who will be John the Baptist.
