Organisation of the EDE design course

A Cooperation of GAIA Netherlands foundation with several ecological communities.

This EDE course is organised by the GAIA Netherlands foundation together with several communities, living together or working together, in Holland and Germany. GAIA Netherlands offers sustainability education. promoting flourishing communities within planetary boundaries. You can read more about our vision, mission and goals on the website of GAIA Netherlands - www.gaia-nederland.nl.

About the curriculum

The curriculum of the EDE is based on experience and expertise developed by a network of teachers of some of the most successful ecovillages and ecological community projects. The curriculum is the result of years of cooperation with teachers from all over the world. These teachers are members of 'GEESE' which means 'Global Ecovillage Educators for Sustainable Earth'.

The first EDE course was offered in 2005 in Findhorn, Scotland. Since then it has been organised more than 200 times all over the world in 34 countries, enriching the lives of more than 5000 participants. The curriculum is an official contribution to the UN decennium of education for sustainable development. The foundation of the training is the 4-D framework for holistic design which goes beyond the conventional three-dimensional sustainability model. The framework integrates social, ecological and economic solutions with a more holistic approach where the critical approach of a holistic worldview and change of values are recognised as the main drivers for behavioural change and cultural transformation. You can read more about the curriculum on GEN (Global Ecovillages Network) and on the website of GAIA Education: http://gaia.org/gaia-education/ede-curriculum/

The Dutch EDE vision

In this EDE we try to create a close interaction between teachers and students and between students themselves. Participants with expertise in specific fields are invited to share their knowledge with the whole group. Hands-on activities will also be facilitated by course participants. We as teachers will often participate in group – and other processes, partly as supervisors/counsellors, but also co- discovering the actual teachings and the learning process as result of the current (socio-cultural) situation.

Authenticity is achieved by using real situations within learning environments. The exercises will draw on real situations from participants’ and facilitators’ lives, so that the learning will be both an understanding of theory and abstract concepts and – often more important – a deepening experience of the applied concepts in concrete socio-cultural situations. The several levels of learning environment are;

• your individual inner universe with your personal imprints from your past life, your world-views, your stories, feelings, possibilities of thoughts.

• the participants as a group with its inter-individual dynamics like shared cultural backgrounds as well as inter-cultural dynamics; personal reactions on one another; co-creations like mutual support and potential shared ideas as well as conflicts and misunderstandings.

• the different ecovillages and excursions, with all its existing and tangible examples.

The Dutch EDE program

The program consists of several components:

Theory The theory is explained on the basis of the twenty themes as illustrated in the sustainability mandala, with the help of exercises and examples. The theory is linked to the experiences gained during the exercises and the knowledge, skills and personal experiences of the participants.

Practical skills The EDE uses many different methods. The theory is also applied in practice. From the beginning, the group forms a community in which tasks are divided among the participants. In addition, we regularly practice practical skills, such as working with clay, gardening in the permaculture garden, making art and making designs.

Field trips The training is given at various locations. A guided tour is organized at each location. Excursions in the area are also part of the curriculum. The following locations are included:

• Earthships in Aardehuizen Olst • Natural Temple at Earth Awareness Teuge • Veerhuis Varik • Hof van Wolda • Mas Con Menos • Trip to the Waddensea • Transition Town Olst

Your own learning path At the beginning of the EDE training you get the opportunity to formulate the goals you want to work on during the course. During the EDE training we will concentrate on different ways to work on our own goals. We work with peer-to-peer groups, where you can reflect on your own processes in pairs. We also work with 'home' groups (CLANS), which reflect on group processes, the content of the EDE, personal goals and feedback. CLAN time of half an hour is scheduled every day.

Co-founder of a Dutch think-tank on climate change with government officials, NGO’s and representatives from industry that did ground-breaking work on carbon reduction and compensation.

Sally Hafez Bahgat Sally established the Oasis Community Centre as a sustainability education centre, a 10,000 square meters’ piece of greenery and desert land, with eco-friendly buildings and facilitating children’s environmental activities. In order to help solve the problem of scarcity of energy, water, and food, the Oasis Community Centre provides curricula-based-education, hands-on training, and practical show-casing to school kids on sustainability issues. This is done through Oasis Green Day and Green Camp for children from national and international schools, and university undergraduates.

In order to provide the same standard of environmental education to all Egyptian kids, Sally founded Khadra, a long-term education project for children from public schools and orphanages, about environmentalism, where children learn about gardening, up cycling and recycled fashion. Through Khadra, and in collaboration with PwC, Oasis aspires to be part of the solution for environmental sustainability in Egypt by educating and encouraging school children to make lifestyle changes and to adopt simple habits to manage solid waste, conserve energy and water. Sally wishes to see this centre replicated nation-wide as satellites, acting as local flagship for sustainability education all over Egypt, and thereafter for all Arabic-speaking countries. The satellites shall be operated by women from the locality, serving the neighbouring schools, and university students. Satellites will then be a game-changer of the education scheme nation-wide, as well as opportunities for women’s employment.

14 Bas Visser, jurist and druid "Do not ask me who I am. If I am already ... then I am emptiness ... emptiness through which that breathes what breathes through everything. '

Bas is co-initiator of the ecological home-work initiative De Zwerm in Winterswijk and co-owner of Levensland, a 3.5 ha large food forest laid out according to permaculture and Anastasia principles. He lives in a farm (starting home-work group) in Winterswijk.

Bas is a lawyer and, among other things, uses his knowledge to supervise starting ecological home-work initiatives and eco- villages. In addition, he has immersed himself in all sorts of cultures and shamanism. The teachers he names are Dave Hegglun (Maori), Ayako Goh (Japan), Ahamkara (Altai), Erik Berglund (USA), Daniel Crane (Tsuu Tina, Canada), Wai Turoa (Maori), Moon Deer (Objibwaj, USA), Elliot Rivera (Cuba), Suvalaq (Inuit, Alaska), Philip Carr-Gomm (Druid, England), Inti Cesar (Peru), Kiesha / Little grandmother (USA), Tulku Lobsang Rinopoche (India), Ayangat (Mongolia) ), Anastasia (Siberia) and all who live close to nature, close to the Source.

Mali Boomkens Mali Boomkens is a happy inhabitant of mobile Ecovillage Ppauw in , and currently works as a coordinator for OtherWise Foundation, organising lectures, courses, workshops and trainings around environmental and social (in)justice and alternative ways of thinking and doing.

Just as her sirname (in English: “little trees”) indicates, Mali became passionate about nature and all that is connected to her from a young age onwards. The academic world and travels around the globe taught her all about sustainable and participatory (tropical) forest and nature management. Followed up by some years of practical schooling in biodynamic farming – after getting involved with co-initiating the Dutch 'Toekomstboeren' (Future Farmers) association, and moving in closer contact with nature with the year training at Living By Nature. Nature skills, primitive crafting, social skills, self-knowledge and observation taught her how to live in nature for a longer period of time, purely on the basis of using natural materials old – native – skills.

Mali is currently walking the path to develop as a facilitator in the fields of nature connection and (eco-)community building, strongly supported and inspired by workshops, (Erasmus+) trainings and European youth exchanges that introduced her to various methods, like Dragon Dreaming, The Work that Reconnects, Deep Ecology, Theory U and Non-Violent Communication.

After co-facilitating some elements of the cultural dimension in this year's EDE, Mali will integrate her noval inspiration in organising the second edition of an intensive, 8-day long summer training on nature connection and inner sustainability for students and youth.

15 Accommodation and Facilities

Die Schöpfung Die Schöpfung, Am Schöpfwerk 2 in Laar / Germany, just across the border at Coevorden.

Mhaelchior and Mharoeska live on 'Die Schöpfung' and live from the idea that if you are who you are, then you will receive the life that belongs to you. They like to share this with people who also experience this. Mhaelchior and Mharoeska have guided their children for years through homeschooling, and from this experience they have discovered that it is important for children, that a child becomes familiar with his own space and in that way becomes familiar with him- or herself.

Program During this section, the social and cultural dimension of the 4D framework will be discussed. Katrien van den Bergh is head coach of the social dimension. The program of the weekend social dimension is based on the following themes:

• Decision-making: Introduction to sociocracy, examples of sociocratic decision-making from the residential community Vlierhof • Leadership: Self-management and leadership with practical examples from the organization of the Vlierhof • Community formation: Different methods for community formation such as sharing circles, trust building and compassionate communication

The focus in all parts of the program is on experiential exercises. After short theoretical inputs we will do a lot of practical exercises together. The cultural dimension is provided by Mhaelchior and Monica Petter. Mhaelchior explains how he started 'Die Schöpfung'. What developments there have been over the years are experiences with home education and awareness development. Monica takes you as a trainer on a journey to your own inner world and connects inner experiences with theoretical models from various cultures and mindfulness. She provides, among other things, nature coaching sessions in nature, an herbal walk and an intense trip through the Wadden Sea Region. Other topics discussed include:

• Theory U technique • Dragon dreaming • Education for sustainable development • Deep ecology • Healing Circles (Exercise by Joana Macy)

Accomodation You can spend the night in your own tent, a caravan, a place to sleep in a dormitory / mini courtyard or for an additional fee a bed and breakfast room at the holistic horse farm 'De hof van Wolda', which is a fifteen-minute walk from 'Die Schöpfung'.

They see it as their communal task to get in tune with the earth again and relate with her. The knowledge centre actively contributes to realistic, local and practical solutions for global issues like energy, food, and living alternatives. Earth Awareness is building a very inspiring and special work of art, the Temple of Nature. A round space of thick, organically shaped tree trunks, curly branches, lime plaster and coloured windows. In this experience space, they can keep on wondering about the beauty in which nature reveals itself. The Temple of Nature is a focal point for contemplation and connection and helps truth-seekers that want to find their deepest core of being. The centre is situated in a wooded area and is an exceptional paradise of birds. The beautiful colossal trees make it a very pleasant place to be.

Accommodation The special ambiance of the location quickly brings you to another era. You will sleep on the spacious art studio upstairs with many windows and a beautiful view. Take your own camping mattress and bedding. There is space for some small tents at request when you book.

17 Aardehuizen (Earthships) Olst Rietgors 22 Olst http://aardehuis.nl

In 2012 about forty adults together with a growing group of volunteers started building their future eco-houses. In the summer of 2015 the communal Middenhuis was finished. At that moment, everyone was living in their own house. Around 75 people in 23 households, including children. The Aardehuizen are a building unicum: built by the people themselves, assisted by nearly 2000 volunteers from 27 countries. It is the Dutch adaptation of the Earthship concept: fully self- sufficient houses, largely built from waste and natural material, and using sunlight as main source of energy for electricity and heating. The people are a community with ‘freedom in connection’ as guiding principle. Decision-making is done by sociocracy. De Aardehuizen are located on the South border of Olst village, 9 km North of Deventer. The train station is at eight minutes walking distance.

Accommodation In the vicinity of the Aardehuizen is a rural group accommodation (‘t Ooievaarsnest), a converted farmhouse, half an hour cycling or ten minutes’ drive from Aardehuizen Olst. This offers eight rooms for a total of 32 people, a double bedroom and a dormitory.
