Now, ten years later, this all-volunteer grassroots initiativeChaos bnecnomeeca tsiginnifigcantSandcenhduorionglpart of the educational and community landscape in Ithaca.

What is IPEaI?nd Community IPEI is a community-based, all-volunteer, nonprofit organ- ization that supports the teachers and students of the Ithaca City School District, connecting the schools with the human and financial resources of our community, thereby enhancing the educational experience and success of every student.

What have we accomplished in 10 years? • Enhanced classroom curriculum through our Teacher Grants Program and the Kids Discover the Trail! collaboration • Increased community commitment to Ithaca public schools • Encouraged and facilitated the growth of community groups that support students and teachers • Provided opportunities for collaboration among groups and individuals working to support our schools • Established Donor Endowments that provide awards each year to students and teachers • Worked with schools to assist students as they transi- tion from elementary to middle school Where are we going in the next decade? IPEI is proud of its accomplishments. Our goals include expanding and improving our cur- rent programs, as well as considering new initiatives that fit our mission to serve as a link and catalyst for strengthening our schools and our community. For ten years, IPEI has been working together with other community groups to enhance public education by con- necting our teachers and students to the diverse array of resources already available in our own backyard. Collabo- ration starts with communication: listening to each other’s ideas, searching for common ground and then together devising solutions that achieve the objectives of the group. Only thPen rdooyogurgao tmo wosrk on programs and activities. IPEI has been a catalyst for several collabora- tions over the past ten years and welcomes additional opportunities to collaborate. Teacher Grants Central to IPEI’s core values and beliefs is the importance to the individual student of the classroom or other in- school experience. We also believe strongly in the value of community involvement with the schools. In keeping with these beliefs we have developed a variety of programs that provide small-to-medium-sized grants to teachers and others to enrich the educational experience for students. Most of these grants require the applicant to have a community partner involved in the project or activity. “Taking the play from the ‘page to the stage’ engaged students in the text and gave them a foundation for reading and appreciating Shakespeare in the future. They realized that the language of Shakespeare is not beyond their understanding and not so intimidating.” —Teacher, Boynton Middle School

In December 2005, 18 teachers in ICSD were awarded a total of $16,000, including $5,000 from the Charles E. Treman Jr. Teacher Grant endowment. IPEI encourages

“My daughter learned an appreciation of a new culture, learned some basic grammar, a positive first experience with a foreign language. The teacher was very charming and a lot of singing and fun activities took place.” —Parent, Caroline Elementary

4 Kids Discover the Trail! Collaboration By far the most ambitious of IPEI’s collaborations, is a joint effort by the eight Discovery Trail partners and our eight elementary schools to introduce 3500 students and their teachers to the wonders of bird migration, animal art, dinosaurs, magnetism, joy of books, wildflowers, and much more through the world-class experts and collections we have here in Ithaca. Discovery Trail part- ners include Cayuga Nature Center, Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, Cornell Plantations, History Center in Tompkins County, Johnson Museum of Art, at PRI, , and the Tompkins County Public Library.

Last year the Kids Discover the Trail! collaboration contin- ued to grow and reached 60% of our elementary teach- ers and students in the Pre-K through 5th grades. Now in its third year, we hope to expand to include up to 75% of all such students and teachers.

“These institutions are jewels, but they only achieve their full worth when all members of the community are able to take advantage of their assets. By bringing hundreds and someday thou- sands of kids to these sites—at no cost to the students or area taxpayers—IPEI has enhanced its own already significant value to Ithaca and Tompkins County.” —Ithaca Journal Editorial

5 “I think the exposure to the Discovery Trail sites is a wonderful experience for all children and having it as a common experience will help to build a feeling of community across the school district.” —Teacher, Belle Sherman Elementary

Kids Discover the Trail! aims to do the following

• Enrich school curriculum • Provide equal access to all Discovery Trail sites for all district Pre-K through 5th grade students • Promote understanding, lessen tensions by providing opportunities for positive social interaction • Promote community awareness of the resources of the Discovery Trail

“I love that this program allows all of our children to experience the rich resources of our community.” —Teacher, Caroline Elementary

Major funding for this Kids Discover the Trail! has been provided through the generosity of local institutions, foundations, businesses and individuals. The overall Program Sponsor in 2005 and 2006 was Tompkins Trust Company and will be Tompkins County Foundation in 2007 and 2008.

6 Fine Arts Booster Group The Ithaca Community Fine Arts Booster Group (FABG) works in partnership with the Ithaca district to support and celebrate all the arts for all the kids. Formed five years ago as an affiliate of IPEI, the Boosters believe the arts—music, visual art, drama, and dance—are a central part of every child’s K– 12 education. The Fine Arts Boosters support existing dAistrfictfpriolgiraamts aendsstaff, and advocate for increased student access, participation, and equity in the arts programs.

Artwork displayed at “The Festival of Talents” by Michelle Chong, Dewitt Middle teacher; Cindy Dougherty, Caroline Elementary teacher; Helen Bigsby, Ithaca High teacher

Highlights from 2005–2006 include

• The teacher mini-grant program awarded 17 grants totaling close to $7,000, including funding assistance and hosts for a visiting choir from Denmark

• An exhibit of artwork by ICSD visual art teachers: “The Festival of Talents” highlighted the connection of teachers’ outside artistic work to their classroom instruction

7 • The musical instrument recycling and refurbishing program called Play it Again, Ithaca, resulted in an additional fifteen instruments now available to the district for student use.

• Increased awareness of the importance of the arts: A total of 8,000 performance booklets or programs were printed for mid- dle and high school band, choir, orchestra, and drama events; advocacy efforts continued, including the need for a fine arts director; mem- bership of the Fine Arts Booster Group increased.

• The Booster group was honored to receive gifts given in memory of Ithaca High School student, Lee Strebel, following his sudden and tragic death.

Code Red Robotics The Code Red Robotics team from Ithaca High School receives major support of local technological organiza- tions and local fans of the robotics. IPEI provides the organizational support needed for these financial trans- actions. There are over 30 students and a dozen mentors involved with the designing, building, and maneuvering of robots that compete in regional and even interna- tional competitions. The game changes from year to year, which represents the ever changing world, so students must tackle different ideas and create new solutions.

8 Mentoring Initiative Matching youth with caring adults who can guide them through the school years is important work done by many organizations in our community. IPEI encourages collaboration among these groups by convening a Mentoring Roundtable to share program ideas, increase awareness and avoid duplication of efforts. For the past two years, IPEI hasIwnoirtkediaclotseilyvweithsthe Ithaca Youth Bureau as part of its College Discovery Program which matches mentors with 5th graders to begin the college discovery process.IPEI worked with the LeadershipTompkins Spring 2006 class to develop a mentoring video on bene- fits, procedures and training needed for any mentoring program. Copies are available from IPEI.

Elementary to Middle School Transition Initiative A collaboration between the IPEI Family and Student Involvement Committee, a VISTA volunteer, Cornell Coop- erative Extension, and the PTA Council, this initiative has been strengthened through the Kids Discover the Trail! collaboration which schedules two trips for fifth graders teaming up with fellow students from other fifth grade classes. Mixing students from different neighborhoods through a shared academic experience promotes under- standing, lessens tensions, and provides opportunities for positive social interaction prior to meeting again in middle school.

IPEI Roundtable Once a month representatives of organizations that are actively supportive of the Ithaca schools get together for a lunch meeting. All attendees get a chance to share news around the table about their individual efforts and chances to collaborate. Guest speakers and focused discussions are sometimes scheduled.

After-School/Transportation Initiative Two years before the change in school start and end times, IPEI was already in conversation about the wide- spread need for more accessibility to afterschool activities as well as employment and educational programming. An online survey was done of Ithaca High School students to document teenagers’ opinions of riding the public bus, as well as their need for transportation at various times of the day. TCAT is altering routes and offering a new youth pass to improve teen transportation. IPEI summer intern, Annie Swafford, completed an inventory of all after school programs offered at our elementary and middle schools in summer of 2005. This inventory is available to the public.

9 Scrubs Club This collaboration between the and the DeWitt Middle School continues to be an exam- ple of a community-school connection that exposes students to the role of the medical center in our commu- nity and the variety of career opportunities available in hospital related jobs. Thirty-forty students in small groups of 10–15 each year participate. This program is in its third year and is made possible by the generosity of the Cayuga Medical Center.

“Education Organizing Grant” Collaboration Along with 30 other community partners, IPEI has pledged their support for the Community Foundation of Tompkins County’s effort to win national funds for Education Organizing in our area.

10 Our Community Engagement Programs encourage community members to discover the pleasure of sharing their talents with our teachers and students, to support the programs and projects that make Ithaca schools spe- cial, and to celebCratoe wmithmciviuc pnridietoyur public schools. Adult Spelling Bee In its eighth yeaEr, IPnEI hgosatsganeAmnnuealnSptelling Bee Contest that draws in community members for an afternoon of fun and competition with proceeds supporting local teachers and other IPEI programs. In the last eight years, approximately $92,000 in grants has been awarded to almost 100 Ithaca City School District teachers at all grade levels.

Tenth Anniversary Celebration A gathering of over 200 people joined college presidents Carl Haynes of Tompkins Cortland Community College, Hunter Rawlings of , and Peggy Williams of Ithaca College to support and celebrate IPEI’s Tenth Anniversary. William’s parting words quoting Margaret Mead captured the mood well,“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful and committed citizens can change the world; indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Media Communications Throughout the year, monthly IPEI guest editorials appeared in , and a monthly radio interview was hosted by “The Morning Report” on WHCU addressing the ways that IPEI has made an impact on public education.

“Connecting School and Community” Campaign Community support for our schools takes many forms and all forms are valuable. IPEI celebrates the entire gamut from Cornell retirees volunteering in elementary school classrooms to local businesses donating supplies for co-curricular student clubs. Financial support through IPEI is growing steadily. On behalf of the students and staff of the district, we thank our donors for their generous contributions. Our ‘Connecting School and Community’ Campaign is the primary means for securing resources to support the IPEI mission as well as its programs and affiliates.

IPEI encourages donors considering gifts of retirement plans, life insurance, real estate, and bequests to work with your own professional adviser. IPEI has a volunteer with expertise in the field of gift planning who can also assist you and the IPEI board with such transactions.

Corporate Honor Roll As part of our Tenth Anniversary celebration, IPEI announced the creation of the first ever IPEI Corporate Honor Roll to recognize local organizations that have been supportive of IPEI and its programs. Strong local schools are essential for a strong community. Local busi- nesses and corporations can participate in strengthening public education through IPEI’s activities.

Founders Fund For our Tenth Anniversary, IPEI has established a “Founders Fund” to recognize the commitment and inspiring work of IPEI’s founders, some of whom are still active board members while others have retired from the board or have moved away from Ithaca. Gifts to the fund will help secure a strong and stable future for the organi- zation.

Donor Endowments IPEI provides community members with a way to recognize and honor special people and support public education at the same time. Endowments enhance the future of our schools and preserve the memory of those honored. These endowment award funds can receive additional gifts at any time.

22 Consistent community financial support for teachers and programs since our inception has made a difference . . .

Our most sincere thanks to our past and present board members, to our dedi- cated “affiliate” friends in the Fine Arts Booster Group and the Code Red Robot- ics Team, to all the volunteers in commu- nity organizations with whom we collaborate, to all the “community part- ners” who come into the classrooms through our Teacher Grants, and to the hundreds of Ithaca teachers and staff who have been our willing and enthusiastic partners!
