School Profile In- 2011—2012 Mission LEADERSHIP Salem Academy Charter School is a small sixth through twelfth grade public school designed to educate the city of Salem’s diverse student population. Through a unique integration of college Sean O’Neil, preparatory classes with service to the community, the school graduates informed, articulate, and proactive individuals of strong character. Executive Director City and School Information [email protected] Salem Academy Charter School is a public school, chartered by the Massachusetts Department of Rachel Hunt, Elementary and Secondary Education under the 1993 Education Reform Act. The school opened its Head of School doors to sixth and seventh graders in September 2004, graduated its first class in 2009, and has grown to over 300 students. All students are challenged with rigorous college-preparatory classes, [email protected] engage in enrichment activities and classes, and apply their learning through service in the Stephanie Callahan, community. JOHN and JANE MATHEW. He was most likely named, as the second son, after his mother’s surname. This seems to be a custom that appears among landed gentry and in several St. John generations. The first son is usually named after the paternal family by either taking the father or grandfather or current tenement-in- chief’s name and the second son takes the mother’s surname as a first name. With his father, Thomas, being a younger son himself, his marriage to the female heir of the Mathew family offered Thomas or one of his sons a greater chance of rising himself to tenant-in-chief of the Mathew estate. -

Places for Struggling Teens™ Published by Woodbury Reports, Inc.™ “It is more important to get it right, than to get it first.” May 2009 - Issue #177 NORTHWEST GET-TOGETHER IS UNIQUE By: Lon Woodbury We are striving to make the upcoming Get-Together on May 15 as unique as the previous three have been. The goal is to emphasize networking and socializing time in a fairly small, informal and interactive setting among everybody who is interested in the network of private, parent choice schools, programs and services, Yes, there will be interesting and valuable presentations, but that is only part of the program. Of at least equal importance is the chance to visit with old friends and make news ones. Those of us who work in this network frequently attend conferences, primarily the IECA and NATSAP conferences. They are invaluable and enjoyable. However, they are usually in expensive hotels or conference centers in cities, and there is a frantic pace from the large numbers attending and being packed with presentations. Each conference is developed around one type of professional (The IECA focuses on the needs of Educational Consultants, NATSAP for school administrative staff….). Frequently, an attendee must choose between whether to have that needed and long-awaited conversation with a colleague or to attend a breakout session occurring at the same time with information important for the attendee’s job. Or, they sometimes take advantage of exploring or shopping in the nearby area. At the NorthWest Get-Together, we are consciously trying to break out of these patterns. The concept was inspired by a meeting called years ago by Rob Spear, then President of the CEDU schools. -

The bridge symbolizes the end of the navigation of Wall St. in the old City of Norwalk, now known as the First Taxing District. The well stands for the former City of South Norwalk, which was called Old Well, a place where ships could replenish their water, and is now the Second Taxing District. The monument, which is dedicated to Roger Ludlow, is the emblem for East Norwalk, site of the original settlement now known as the Third Taxing District. 2018-2019 • Annual Report Letter to the Community FALL 2019 According to Rudolf Steiner, the three components of a Waldorf education are a need for imagination, a sense of truth, and a feeling of responsibility. For 54 years, Detroit Waldorf School has nurtured these pillars of learning in thousands of students, who have entered society as creative, voracious, and responsible citizens of the world. It is our community that sustains DWS. Our parents, grandparents, alumni, teachers, and staff breathe life into our school day after day. We endured periods of uncertainty, and now we are navigating a period of unprecedented growth and demand. This next year is critical for our school to determine how we might increase our capacity and open our doors to more children. It is our challenge to ride this wave of interest in Waldorf education while also addressing the need for more Waldorf educators. In order to thrive, DWS requires more teachers and these teachers deserve fair compensation. DWS has endured because we have remained true to our mission and committed to the children who pass through our gate.
