The report was prepared mostly from the transcripts of the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) hearings on Modern Advertising Practices.' The basic structure of the industry as well as its role in marketing strategy is reviewed and*some interesting insights are exposed: The report is primarily concerned with investigating the current state of the art, being prompted mainly by the increased consumes: awareness of the nation and the FTC's own inability to set firm guidelines' for effectively and consistently dealing with the industry. The report points out how advertising does its job, and how it employs sophisticated motivational research and communications methods to reach the wide variety of audiences available. The case of self-regulation is presented with recommendationS that the FTC be particularly harsh in applying evaluation criteria tochildren's advertising. Troelstrup Charter Member President - 1959-60 Distinguished Fellow - 1973 Interview with Arch Troelstrup (Nonnan Silber) Kansas City, Missouri March 16, 1983 Prof. Silber: This is an interview with Prof. Arch Troelstrup. Present also is his wife, Ann. The interview is taking place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on March 16, 1983. The interviewer is Nonnan Silber. Mr. Troelstrup, could we begin by talking about how you became involved in the consumer movement, and then how you became involved with ACCI? Prof. Troelstrup: I suppose my first serious interest in the consumer education area came as an observer of the Sloan Foundation consumer education experiment at Stephens College, Colum bia, Missouri, in 1936-1942. In 1942, the Sloan grant in consumer education at Stephens College was terminated, and I was invited to teach consumer education or consumer problems in the Home and Family Division, to carry on the work started by the Sloan Foundation. Because there was no textbook suitable for that teaching, I subsequently wrote my own textbook. And then I met Colston Warne quite early in the movement. In fact, it was Colston Warne who called me to invite me to attend that initial meeting at the Ray Price home in Minneapolis which resulted in the "birth" of ACCI. A Post-Colonial Perspective on Consumerist Organizations in Brazil
Uma perspectiva pós-colonial sobre organizações consumeristas no Brasil Marcus Wilcox Hemais¹ ¹ Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) / Departamento de Administração, Rio de Janeiro – RJ, Brasil Resumo Este estudo tem por objetivo apresentar, a partir da perspectiva pós-colonial, uma visão sobre o movimento consumerista no Brasil pouco discutida na literatura de consumerismo, analisando como e porque padrões eurocêntricos de proteção ao consumidor foram incorporados ao movimento e como a adoção desse modelo resultou em limitados avanços na proteção aos consumidores no país. São apresentados os casos de importantes organizações de defesa do consumidor brasileiras, a saber, Programa de Proteção e Defesa do Consumidor de São Paulo (Procon-SP), Instituto Brasileiro de Defesa do Consumidor (Idec) e Proteste: Associação Brasileira de Defesa do Consumidor, e sua associação a organizações consumeristas internacionais, em especial à Consumers International (CI), mimetizando suas práticas de defesa do consumidor. A partir da perspectiva adotada é possível perceber como a influência eurocêntrica está presente em campanhas, pesquisas, eventos, testes comparativos de produtos, palestras e intercâmbios de tais organizações brasileiras, revelando como a adoção de um comportamento mimetista perpetua domínios pós-coloniais que, no fim, não resultam em melhorias na proteção aos consumidores no Brasil. A literatura de consumerismo pouco discute tais aspectos geopolíticos do movimento consumerista, dificultando o reconhecimento de que o modelo eurocêntrico de consumerismo tem mais do que a proteção aos consumidores como sua prioridade, pois se alinha aos interesses do Norte Global, em especial dos Estados Unidos da América (EUA), de perpetuidade de sua hegemonia no mundo. (AC 1920) and Clarice Brows Thorp Papers 1857-1994 (bulk 1920-1967) Abstract: Willard Long Thorp (1899-1992; AC 1920) was a pioneer statistician, economist, domestic and foreign policy advisor, international development expert, and private business consultant. Thorp’s papers document the role of a key U.S. government figure during periods marked by political and economic turbulence. As Assistant Secretary of State for Economic Affairs from 1946-1952, he played a critical role in the design and implementation of the Marshall Plan and of the Truman administration’s Point IV program of international aid. He also held a number of United Nations appointments and was Director of the Merrill Center for Economics. Thorp also taught Economics at Amherst College. The collection documents all of these activities and many more. It also partially documents his partnership with Clarice Brows Thorp (1912- 2003) and her career as a lawyer and civil rights advocate prior to their marriage in 1947. Analyzes was performed on how and why Eurocentric patterns of consumer protection were incorporated into the movement and how the adoption of this model resulted in limited advances in consumer protection in the country. The cases of important Brazilian consumer organizations, namely Procon-SP, Idec and Proteste, are presented, discussing their association with international consumerist organizations, with special attention to Consumers International, and how they imitated their consumer protection practices. From the perspective adopted, it is possible to see how the Eurocentric influence is present in campaigns, research, events, comparative tests of products, lectures and exchanges of such Brazilian organizations, revealing how the adoption of mimetic behavior perpetuates post- colonial domination that does not result in improvements to consumer protection in Brazil. -

They have the power to choose to buy one product over another, the power to switch brands and ignore marketing messages. Australian consumers, like their counterparts across the developed world, have almost unlimited choices. However, more choice doesn’t always mean better choice. Indeed, many of our choices may have unwanted consequences not the least over- consumption and negative environmental impact.
