Interview Freethinkers of Our Time For over the last one and a half decades Mukto-Mona has been fighting for the development of humanism and freethinking in South Asia. The organisation's member-contributor's included novelist Humayun Azad. In an email conversation with the SWM, three members of mukto-mona.com talk about the state of freedom in Bangladesh, and South Asia in general. Ahmede Hussain 1. How has Mukto-Mona evolved? Can you please explain the idea behind Mukto-Mona for our readers? Avijit Roy: Mukto-Mona came into being in the year 2000, with the intention of debating and promoting critical issues that are of the utmost importance in building a progressive, rational and secular society, but usually are ignored in the man stream Bangladeshi and South Asian media. For example, consider the question: Does one need to adhere to a religious doctrine to live an honest, decent and fulfilled life? This may seem like an off-the-track topic to many, but at the same, we cannot deny that this is a very critical and crucial question. It was 2000. I was very active on the net and writing in several e-forums simultaneously on topics pertaining to rationalism, humanism and science. One such e-forum which I came across at that time was News From Bangladesh (NFB) which regularly published debates between believers and rationalists like me. Although only a handful in number, I discovered, I was not alone. I met a few more expatriate Bangladeshi writers (of whom some constitute today Mukto-Mona’s advisory and editorial board) who also thought in same way about religious doctrine and conventional beliefs.

Notes 1. Introduction 1. ‘Diaras and Chars often first appear as thin slivers of sand. On this is deposited layers of silt till a low bank is consolidated. Tamarisk bushes, a spiny grass, establish a foot-hold and accretions as soon as the river recedes in winter; the river flows being considerably seasonal. For several years the Diara and Char may be cultivable only in winter, till with a fresh flood either the level is raised above the normal flood level or the accretion is diluvated completely’ (Haroun er Rashid, Geography of Bangladesh (Dhaka, 1991), p. 18). 2. Abstract The Impact of Christian Missions and Colonization in Northeast India and Its Role in the Tribal Nation-Building Movement Christian missions had a huge impact in the Northeastern region of India. This impact, combined with western (British) colonization, produced a synergy that changed the entire landscape of the Northeast. This dissertation focuses on the social and political aspects of that change. The primary catalyst was the translation of the Bible into local languages, and a highly successful education program that every mission and denomination implemented from the very beginning.

  • Killing for Blasphemy and the Ghost of Al Qaeda in Bangladesh Abstract
1 Killing for Blasphemy and the Ghost of al Qaeda in Bangladesh Taj Hashmi Abstract While Islamist terror outfits like HUJI (B) and JMB resorted to indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians up to 2005/2006 to establish an alternative Islamic order, the vicious attack on Humayun Azad in early 2004 – purportedly by Islamists for his blasphemous anti- Islamic writings – signaled a new pattern in the realm of political assassination in Bangladesh. Afterwards assassins have killed five people for blasphemous writings against Islam. This paper sheds light on the problem of killing for blasphemy against Islam, with a view to drawing a line between ideologically motivated target killing of “blasphemers” by Muslim fanatics, and indiscriminate killing of total strangers by ideologically motivated Islamist terrorist groups. Although target killings or assassinations of “blasphemers” could be acts of terrorism, but there are compelling reasons not to assume that the ongoing killing for blasphemy in the country are acts of terrorism. In the backdrop of inadequate information, contradictory, over-simplified reports, and the dubious role of government agencies vis-à-vis the so-called Ansarullah Bangla Team (“al Qaeda affiliate”) attacks in Bangladesh, one believes there are lots of delusional cries of “Wolf” behind the curtain. Keywords: HUJI (B); JMB; Islamic/Islamist; Bangladesh; killing for blasphemy; Ansarullah Bangla Team; al Qaeda. Taj Hashmi is Professor in Austin Peay State University, USA. Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (Hum.), Vol. 65(2), 2020, pp. 103-121 AWQAF PROPERTIES IN BENGAL SINCE THE PERIOD OF MUSLIM RULE Khoundkar Alamgir Abstract Giving immovable properties to charity began in Bengal from the very beginning of Muslim rule in 1204 and mosques, Madrasahs and Khanqahs were established to create a Muslim community. Henceforth, awqaf (plural of waqf) were created in Bengal by the state, noblemen of the community and wealthy individuals. There are various references of Awqaf in archaeological and literary sources. Sian inscription, Birbhum, West Bengal (1221); Sitalmat inscription, Naogaon, Bangladesh (1254); Nayabari inscription, Manikganj (1595); Bara Katra inscription, Dhaka (1642) are incontrovertible evidences of awqaf in Bengal. Sultan Nasiruddin Nusrat Shah (1519-1532) son of Sultan Alauddin Husain Shah (1494-1519) of Bengal established Bagha mosque (1523) of Rajshahi and Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (16401646 donated lands for the maintenance of the madrasah attached to it. It was a pre- Mughal establishment. Food, lodging and other necessities of the students were fulfilled out of the income of the Waqf property. According to another land grant a mosque, a madrasah and other religious institutions were maintained out of the income of 2,750 bighas of land at Mahi Santosh, Naogaon district, Bangladesh even in the 19th century (in the decaying period). According to sources Lalbagh (at present known as a fort) was originally a waqf property of Nawab Shaista Khan, a Mughal Subadar who ruled Bengal for long 24 years (1664-1688 with a break for one year). Haji Muhammad Mohsin of Hooghly, West Bengal established a large endowment in the Colonial period.
