INTERMEDIATE B AND C FINALS GET GIRL’S BOX OFF TO GREAT START AT FESTIVAL

The Girls finals marked the halfway point of the 2014 Ontario Lacrosse Festival, with the Intermediate B and C finals heading up the group.

The battled it out for the Intermediate C title, in their first year of existence, against the Sarnia Pacers. Sarnia took the early lead in the first, ending the period up 2-1 with goals by Jada Henry and Krystal Adair. Though Bridget Folk extended the lead with a goal early in the second, Orillia battled back, with shots from Kennady Blunt and Madison Valle, to tie it up 3-3 going into the third. The Kings locked in their first Intermediate title with a tie-breaking goal by Marah Roberson with four and a half minutes to go, for a final score of 4-3.

The Clarington Gaels fought for their club’s only title at the Festival, trumping the Wallaceburg Griffins 6-2 in the Intermediate B final. Though Megan Seed notched two goals in the first and third for the Griffins, they were unable to keep up with the intense offensive pressure of the Gaels. Julia DeVouge scored the Gaels opening goal in the first period, tying the game 1-1. The Gaels tore away from the Griffins in the second with goals from Mackenzie Clements, Zoe Chad, and two from Rachel Dowdall. Seed’s effort in the third came all too late as Clarington’s Krista Laing popped off another goal with 32 second left, solidifying the Gaels’ 6-2 championship win.

The defended their Intermediate A title, defeating the Peterborough Lakers in a 3-1 showdown. Though it was Peterborough’s Kristen Kehoe who opened up the scoring early in the first, the Warriors exerted their dominance late in the game after a scoreless second period. Taylor Milburn, assisted by Kaylyn Roach, tied the game three minutes into the third period. Amanda Kernohan followed up with a goal of her own, assisted by Kennedy Milburn, to take the lead 2-1. Rachael McKinnon extended the lead with 31 seconds left in the game to deliver the Warriors second straight Intermediate A provincial title.

Abby Clayton lead the Centre Wellington Mohawks through their 5-3 victory against last year’s champions, the Whitby Warriors, in the Girls Midget A Final. The Warriors took the early lead in the first period with three goals, two by Captain, Kristine Webber and one from Samantha Gates. The momentum switched hands in the second, however, as the Mohawks battled back to a one-point differential with goals from Abby Clayton and Taylor Collins. The Warriors still had the lead late in the third until Clayton logged two goals at the 3:21 and 1:17 marks to take the lead 4-3. The Warriors were unable to retaliate, and the Mohawks solidified their 5-3 win with a goal by Collins in the last minute.

The won the Girls Midget B Provincial title for the second year in a row, defeating the in a close 2-1 battle. Summer Belanco scored both of the Bengals’ goals, logging her first at the 7:47 mark in the opening period. Jennica Klassen brought the Knights back with a last second blast in the first to tie the game 1-1 going into the second. The tie was broken by Belanco with two and a half minutes left in the second, and the score would hold to the end of the game to deliver the Bengals’ second straight win.

The Girls Midget C final took place between the Kitchener-Waterloo Braves and . The Braves took an early lead with a cluster of goals scored mid-way through the first. Jenna Brown scored two a minute and a half apart with assists from Taylor Cloutier and Caitlyn McGivern. Cloutier scored her team’s third goal with two and a half minutes left in the third period. The Braves extended their lead to 4-0 in the second with a goal from Megan Fergusson who was assisted by Brown and Cloutier. Though the Thunderhawks tried to make a comeback in the third with a two goal run by Julia Ruscio, they failed to break through the Braves defense in enough time to diminish their early lead. The Braves brought home the C title with a 4-2 final win.

The Kingston Krossfire Bantam A team battled back after a loss in the finals at the 2013 Ontario Lacrosse Festival to beat the Whitby Warriors 4-1 in the 2014 Provincial Championship. Captain of the Krossfire, Clare Johnston, scored her first of three goals with 6:18 left in the first to take the lead 1-0. The Warriors’ MacKenzie Dennis tied it up with two minutes left in the period. The Krossfire reasserted their dominance in the second, as assistant captain Rachel Brayton logged the period’s only goal. Johnston continued her hot streak, scoring two in the third period for a final score of 4-1.

Team Captain, Adelle St John lead the to the Girls Bantam B title, scoring the team’s only goals in the final game for a 3-1 win. St John opened up the scoring late in the first, with an assist by Mackenzie Deleary, to take a 1-0 lead. She continued to assert her dominance in the second period, scoring her second goal unassisted, to extend the Devils’ lead by one. She scored her third unanswered goal in the third period, with an assist from Marrissa Smoke, to solidify her team’s place as the Bantam B Provincial Champions. Kitchener-Waterloo’s Samantha Kudoba scored one with 28 seconds left in the game to make the score 3-1.
