CLARINGTON TAKES TWO AT THE HARROW/OLA PEE WEE LACROSSE PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The made a double showing in the Harrow/OLA Pee Wee Lacrosse Provincial Championships at the 2015 Ontario Lacrosse Festival. Clarington 1 challenged the Sarnia Pacers1 for the Pee Wee B final, and Clarington 2 took the into overtime in search of the Pee Wee C title.

The Green Gaels 1 wasted no time taking the lead in the Pee Wee B final, scoring three goals in three minutes. Ethan Matthews responded for the Sarnia Pacers with a goal to end the period, leaving the Green Gaels with a 3-1 lead. The Pacers jumped out first in the second period with a goal from Sebastien Frenette, but Jack Goulding responded for the Green Gaels two minutes later. Ryan Whelpley took the Pacers within one of the leaders in the second period to make the score 4-3. Landen Hookey tied the game for the pacers with a goal early in the third, but the Green Gaels led a strong press for the rest of the period. Goals by Hayes Bell, Shayne Pearsall, and Brooklyn Walker-Welch boosted the Green Gaels ahead by three for a 7-4 championship score.

The Clarington Green Gaels 2 and the Cornwall Celtics met in the Pee Wee C final to determine which of the two undefeated teams would become Division C Champions. Brody Strong and Benjamin Houle scored a goal each in the first period for a tie score of 1-1. Though the Celtics took the lead in the second period with an unassisted goal by Kaleb Malyon, Chris Sobil brought the Gaels back to a tie with his first goal of the game. Brandon Braithewaite pushed the Gaels ahead by one in the third period, but the Celtics were quick to follow up with a goal by Roenick Jodoin. With a minute and a half left to spare in the final period, Ty Harris shot one past the Celtics goaltender to take a one-goal lead. A minute and a half proved too much time, as the Celtics sent the game into overtime with a 0:49 shot from Houle. Despite their aggressive play in the first three periods, the Gaels failed to break through the Celtics defense in overtime. Two goals from Malyon and Colby Dobbins pushed the Celtics ahead, solidifying a 6-4 winning score.

After failing to make the Pee Wee D final at the 2014 Ontario Lacrosse Festival, the returned in 2015 to reclaim their 2013 Pee Wee D Provincial Championship title. They confidently dominated round robin play with a 3-0 record, taking on the 2-1 2 in their final matchup of the weekend. Zachary Aubin-Vardy struck first for the Hawks, though Ryan Reyes evened the score for the Mountaineers to create a 1-1 tie. Aubin-Vardy logged his second for the Hawks with 46 seconds left in the first period, to edge out a 2-1 lead. The Hawks made the first mark again in the second period with a goal by Ayden Veitch to extend the lead to 3-1. The Mountaineers were quick to respond, however, with Atkin Dwyer bringing his team within a point of the leaders. Riley Knox closed out the scoring in the second period with a goal assisted by team captain, Ryan Clarke, to hold the 4-2 lead for the Mountaineers. Though they were shut out in the third period, the Hawks held the Mountaineers to one goal to take the championship title with a 4-3 final score.

The Pee Wee E final proved to be another close match, with the undefeated Kingston Krossfire taking on the 2-1-0 2. The teams matched goals in the first period for a 1-1 tie, and Justin Leigh took the lead for the Kings with eight minutes left in the second period. Though Isaac Wills brought the game back to a tie minutes later with a Krossfire goal, the Kings notched two more to end the period with a 4-2 lead. Momentum shifted in the third period after an exchange of goals, and the Krossfire took control of the 5-3 deficit. With three minutes left to play, Owen Wills and Will Daniel each hit solo shots to tie the game 5-5. Daniel took an assist from Oliver Doig to score the game-winning goal with 44 seconds left on the clock. The Kings were shut out in the final seconds, and the Krossfire took the championship title with a 6-5 final score.

The 3 and the Stayner Hitmen met in the Pee Wee F final at the 2015 Ontario Lacrosse Festival. The Knights shut the Hitmen out of the first two periods, collecting four goals to the Hitmen’s zero. Sean Kennedy, Kaleb Ellard, Akash Prasad, and Noah Ellard were all credited. Though Ethan Grainger put the Hitmen on the board with a goal in the last two minutes of game play, the Knights prevailed to win the Pee Wee F title in a 4-1 final score.
