The di.trict had a 1:~51 p"pulation of 1,175,309 and an area of 4034-4 sqllare miles, according to the area. figure furnished by the Surveyor General of India. This Handbook contains tables for Sa tara Worth dhltl'ict, compiler! after the 1951 Census of India. The main results of the 1951 Censns are embodied in the State Tables published for the States of BCll1lbay, Saul"lslllra and Kutch. In this Handhook, the data are exhibited in gl'E'ater detail. The numbers givf:D to tables ill this publication cones pond to thode given in the State Census Report, The following tahles for t.he district have, howevel', not heen included in tbisHandbook, ;- A-Il Vari1ttion in population'daring fifty years, A-IV Towns clasf;ified by popUlation with variations sinee 1901. D-IV Migrants In the E-Summary table, in this Handbook, some columns have ~been omitted. III the case of the C-serit's of tables, except C-I. the data were'extracted Oil the basis of a sample ~I)unt of approximatply 10% of the censns slips, Instead of a full C01lnt of all the slips, The C-I tahle was prepared from a four pel'cent sample of the households l'ecorded in the National Re~i8ter. of Citizens relating to each town or vill~e. ' In 1941, the population figur(l~ were exhibit<>d accordi.ng to communities in the "Villal{e Handhooks" publish",d by the G,)Vei'fiIUent oE Bombay. I~ 1951, the basis of classification at the Census was changed fl'<l1D a s[)ci:l] to an economic one, and the figm','s for villages given in the Pl'imary Censns Abstraots and in tables A-V. B-1, B-II, C-II and E are according to the following eight Livelihoorl C}asses:- Agricultural Classes I Cnltivators of land, wholly or mainly owneJ; and their dependant", It Cultivators of land, wholly or mainly unowned;.· Rlld thpi, dependants. II I Culli vating labourers; and their dependants, IV N on-cultivating owners of land j agricultural rent recei vel's; and their dependante. Non-Agricultural Classes Persons (inHuding dependants) who derive their principal means 01 liveli- hood from;-" ' V Production other than cultivation. V I Commerce. V II Transport. VIII Other services and miscellaneous SOllrceg, ,Dependants, w}1ether earning or non-earning, were classified at the cen'Sus at®rding to the prino.pal means of livelihood of the persons on whom they were dependent. The Primary Census Abstracts, which contain basic information in respect of every village and town, have been arranged according to talukas and petas, units into which every di~trict is divided for administrative purposes. The taluka was, however, too small a unit to adopt for preparing the main cens us til bles. Therefore, in the B, C and D-series of tables figures have beeR given for tracts and not for talukas and petas. Before sorting the census slips and tabulating the results, tracts were formed by combinin14 the rural and urban areas of two or more talllkas or pet as. The tracts into which Satara North district was divided for this purpose~are shown below:- Rural Tracts (1) Rural areas of Satara and K(l,rad taJukas, (2) Rural areas of Palan and ]aoli talukas. (3) Rural areas of Koregaon, Khatav, Man, Phaltan and Wai talukas and Khandala and !--lahabaleshwar petao. Urban Tracts (1) Urban area~ of Satara and Karad talukas,\ (2) Urban areas of Koregaon, Khatav, Man. Phaltan and Wai talukas and Mahahaleshwar peta. Urban areas co~prise the towns shown in table A-V. j~ • Shortly before the 19;)1 population census, a census of Small Industries \vas ~aken, and the results of this census are given in the table called "Small Scale I Industries Census-Employment in Esta~ishments", included In this Handbook. The intention was to find out something about Cottage and Home J ndustries and small workshops. The larger establi~hments, that is, power-using t'stablishments with 10 or more workers and non-power using establishments with ']0 or more workers, were excluded from the scope of the enquiry as they now submit returns under the Factory Act. The enquiry did not concern itself also with workers functioning on dieit own and not employing other people, except wpen looms were used. Otherwise the concept was of an enquiry which embraced all forms of associate activity where articles were produced, repaired or otherwise treated for sale, use or disposal. • Shivaji's Fortunes and Possessions
The Life of Shivaji Maharaj, 414-420, 2017 (Online Edition). N. Takakhav Chapter 31 Shivaji’s Fortunes and Possessions N. S. Takakhav Professor, Wilson College, Bombay. Editor Published Online Kiran Jadhav 17 March 2018 The life story of Shivaji has been told in the preceding chapters. It is proposed in the present chapter to make an attempt to estimate the extent of his power, possessions and wealth at the time of his death. Nor should it be quite an uninteresting subject to make such an audit of his wealth and possessions, seeing that it furnishes an index to the measure of his success in his ceaseless toils of over thirty-six years, in that war of redemption which he had embarked upon against the despotism of the Mahomedan rulers of the country. At the time when the Rajah Shahaji transferred his allegiance from the fallen house of the Naizam Shahi sultans to that of the still prosperous Adil Shahi dynasty and in the service of that government entered upon the sphere of his proconsular authority in the Karnatic, he had left his Maharashtra jahgirs, as we have seen, under the able administration of the loyal Dadaji Kondadev. These jahgir estates comprised the districts of Poona, Supa, Indapur, Daramati and a portion of the Maval country. This was the sole patrimony derived by Shivaji from his illustrious father at the time he embarked upon his political career. Even these districts were held on the sufferance of the Bijapur government and were saddled with feudal burdens. That government was in a position to have cancelled or annexed these jahgirs at any time.

BIOGRAPHY OF MAHATMA PHULE by Dr. Y. D. Phadke. for the bo... http://www.dalitstan.org/books/slavery/slavry_b.html ------- O ------- Slavery by Mahatma Phule ------- O ------- Biography of Mahatma Phule Dr.Y.D. Phadke. [This brief Life Sketch of Mahatma Jotirao Phule is written by the noted the scholar Dr.Y.D. Phadke. He is the editor of the Collected Words of Mahatma Phule in Marathi. He is also an eminent scholar of Mahatma Phule and the Satyashodhak Movement.] JOTIRAO GOVINDRAO PHULE occupies a unique position among the social reformers of Maharashtra in the nineteenth century. While other reformers concentrated more on reforming the social institutions of amily and marriage with special emphasis on the status and right of women, Jotirao Phule revolted against the unjust caste system under which millions of people had suffered for centuries. In particular, he courageously upheld the cause of the untouchables and look up the cudgels for the poorer peasants. He was a militant advocate of their right. The story of his stormy life is an inspiring saga of a continuous struggle whih he waged relentlessly against the forces of reaction. Though some keen observers of the social scene in Maharashtra like Narayan Mahadeo Parmananda did acknowledge his greatness in his lifetime, it is only in is only in recent decades that there is increasing appreciation of his service and sacrifice in uplifting the masses. Jotirao Phule was born in 1827. His father, Govindrao was a vegetable-vendor at Poona. Originally Jotirao's family known as Gorhays, came from Katgun, a village in the Satara district of Maharashtra, His grandfather Shetiba Gorhay settled down in Poona.
