Programme information Saturday 6th March to Friday 12th March 2021 WEEK 10 ALEXANDER ARMSTRONG GREAT BRITISH ORCHESTRAS WEEK on CLASSIC FM Monday 8th to Friday 12th March, 9am to 12pm It’s Great British Orchestras Week on Classic FM. Each day in the Classic FM Hall of Fame Hour (9am to 10am), Alexander Armstrong features the best recordings taken from the top 300, performed by some of the greatest orchestras that Britain is fortunate to have. The programme begins with Elgar’s uplifting Chanson de Matin played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and one of the country’s oldest orchestras, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, play Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1, with Simon Trpceski as soloist. Classic FM is available across the UK on 100-102 FM, DAB digital radio and TV, on Global Player on your smart speaker (“play Classic FM”), iOS or Android device and at ClassicFM.com. 1 WEEK 10 SATURDAY 6TH MARCH 4pm to 7pm: MOIRA STUART’S HALL OF FAME CONCERT It’s the final week of voting for the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2021, so Moira plays one of her choices: Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, heard in its orchestration by Ravel, whose most famous work is also on the menu this afternoon. Elsewhere, there’s a moving performance of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Pathetique’ symphony from the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who celebrates his birthday today, a choral Mozart favourite, and Yuja Wang plays Rachmaninov. Ennio Morricone’s sun-kissed score for Cinema Paradiso features, as does the story of how Mary Poppins came to our screens in Saving Mr. Banks which was scored by Thomas Newman. Carter Burwell's music for the Coen Brothers' cult hit Hail, Caesar! is also included, as is the all-important music for the 2011 silent film The Artist by Ludovic Bource. 9pm to 10pm: DAVID MELLOR’S MELODIES David focuses on the many beautiful melodies written by Bach. Highlights include Alfred Brendel’s recording of a prelude from the Well Tempered Klavier, and a chance to hear the brilliant Jacques Loussier Trio’s distinctive take on the great composer’s music. 3 SUNDAY 7TH MARCH 4pm to 7pm: JOHN HUMPHRYS John showcases Dvořák’s most famous symphony, written to celebrate his love of Native American music and African-American Spirituals. Colin Davis conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in the opening movement of Dvořák’s Symphony No.9, ‘From the New World’. John also features more sounds of Wales; this week captured live in performance at the Royal Albert Hall, as the thousand-strong voices of the North Wales Male Voice Choir Association, sing Emrys Jones’ Morte Criste. 7pm to 9pm: SMOOTH CLASSICS AT SEVEN with CHARLOTTE HAWKINS Violinist Daniel Lozakovich is Charlotte’s Young Classical Star tonight. Born in Stockholm in 2001, the 19-year-old violinist has already amassed an enviable list of concert appearances including with the Orchestre National de France, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. Last year Daniel released his third album on Deutsche Grammophon, a live recording with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra under Valery Gergiev. 9pm to 10pm: JULIAN LLOYD WEBBER’S RISING STARS (2 / 5) The world-renowned cellist returns to highlight more of his “30 under 30”; those young musicians who deserve a place in the spotlight. This week, the nineteen year old Dutch violinist whose playing has been described as a “miracle of musicality”; Noa Wildschut performs Mozart’s Violin Concerto No.5. Julian also introduces listeners to Freddie de Tomasso – a British/Italian tenor whose voice is already setting pulses racing across Europe. He sings Addio, sogni di Gloria; a track from his new album Passione. Then, Julian shares his particular interest in the career of a musician who plays on the very same Stradivarius cello that he himself performed on for thirty years. 29-year old Iranian Kian Soltani is under the wing of Daniel Barenboim as a member of the West- Eastern Divan Orchestra, and shows off his talent by concluding tonight’s show with the finale of Dvorak’s Cello Concerto. 4 MONDAY 8TH MARCH 9am to 12pm: ALEXANDER ARMSTRONG It’s Great British Orchestras Week on Classic FM. All week, John celebrates these Great British Orchestras, and the wealth of great musical talent across the country. Beginning the festivities, Alexander Mackenzie’s witty Britannia – A Nautical Overture, which is based on Arne’s famous patriotic tune Rule, Britannia!, performed by the Orchestra of Opera North, before a multi-award-winning performance of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.1 from young star Benjamin Grosvenor, accompanied by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Elim Chan. Later, there’s an exciting recording of Prokofiev’s ‘Classical’ symphony from the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy, and fiery Mozart from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Alexander Mackenzie Britannia – A Nautical Overture Opus 52 David Lloyd-Jones conducts the Orchestra of Opera North Frederic Chopin Piano Concerto No.1 in E minor Opus 11 Piano: Benjamin Grosvenor Elim Chan conducts the Royal Scottish National Orchestra Sergei Prokofiev Symphony No.1 in D major Opus 25 (‘Classical’) Vladimir Ashkenazy conducts the London Symphony Orchestra Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat major K.364 Violin: Renaud Capuçon Viola: Antoine Tamestit Louis Langrée conducts the Scottish Chamber Orchestra John Ireland A Downland Suite David Curtis conducts the Orchestra of the Swan 5 TUESDAY 9TH MARCH 9am to 12pm: ALEXANDER ARMSTRONG Alexander celebrates one of the most exciting Great British Orchestras around in the Classic FM Hall of Fame Hour today – the Chineke! Orchestra – with a recording of Dvořák’s ‘New World’ symphony from their debut album. Soloist Min Kym then joins the Philharmonia Orchestra in Brahms’ Violin Concerto. 8pm to 10pm: THE CLASSIC FM CONCERT with JOHN SUCHET: GREAT BRITISH ORCHESTRAS WEEK – PART 2 Continuing Classic FM’s celebration of Britain’s orchestras, the programme opens with a performance from the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, which has been showcasing the nation’s finest young classical musicians since its inception in 1948. After, another young star, Julian Bliss, joins the Royal Northern Sinfonia in a critically acclaimed recording of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, and Constantin Silvestrov conducts a performance of Elgar’s holiday-inspired In the South by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, which began life as a wind ensemble in 1893. Elsewhere, The English Concert plays Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks, and there’s a lesser-known Grieg work performed by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, which celebrated its centenary in 2020.
