Only thirty 3rd, 4 , Student Directory 2 and 5th grade students will be selected, so ask your child to do their best on the application. Each participating grade level requires their students to read a certain number of books from this list. Every year a committee comprised of Texas librarian from about the state nominate 20 books to be on the “Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List”. When selecting titles, the committee considers student interests, relevant content, reputable reviews, and literary quality. Both fiction and nonfiction are represented. The goal of the yearly list is to introduce children in grades 3-6 to a variety of quality books, develop critical thinking skills, and honor imaginative authors. As your children work through the books, please keep in mind that the list was set for children in 3rd- 6th grades. Some of the subject matter presented in the books may be intense of difficult for younger readers to understand. With this in mind, we are including two books that can be used as substitutes for any of the master list books for students who are challenging themselves to read all 20 titles. These students may opt to read The Friendship War by Andrew Clements or A Boy Called Bat by Elana Arnold Sign up to receive the Pony in lieu of any master list title. He then shook his head in disgust after the shot sailed through the air on the fair side of the left field pole for a three-run home run, pushing the Astros closer back to the AL West pack. Brought in to bolster the Astros’ rotation for the pennant stretch, Kazmir could not match his protégé Sonny Gray in his first outing against the A’s since Oakland traded him to his hometown team on July 23. Gray and reliever Ryan Dull combined for a shutout and Canha broke open a one-run game with his three-run home run to propel the A’s to a 4-0 victory before a crowd of 11,364. “It’s always frustrating losing games, especially at a time like this when we really need to take care of business,” Kazmir said. “You have to stay positive and trust what’s gotten us here this entire year, and we’ll be just fine. “We can’t let a game like this really bother us and we can’t let it carry on for tomorrow’s game and the series after that.” The AL West-leading Astros are now off to an 0-2 start on their crucial 10-game trip through Oakland, Anaheim and Arlington.

    ASTROS DAILY CLIPS FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 2015 Astros' youth baseball initiatives go beyond the field; Urban Youth Academy, RBI program offer free instruction By: Brian McTaggart / MLB.com The Astros have long had a commitment to youth baseball in the Houston area, something that's even blossomed in recent years with the opening of the Houston Astros Urban Youth Academy on the city's north side. In addition to the Urban Youth Academy, Astros RBI is a free baseball and softball program funded by the Astros Foundation. What's more, the Astros Community Leaders program has renovated 18 youth fields in seven parks around the area in the last couple of years. "We are very proud of the Astros RBI program and the Astros Urban Youth Academy," Astros owner Jim Crane said. "The RBI program is a continuation of our efforts at the Academy, where we provide free baseball and softball instruction. Our focus of developing skills on the field helps to instill important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, dedication and respect for others." Astros RBI is holding tryouts for its summer baseball and softball leagues in the upcoming weeks at the Urban Youth Academy. Astros RBI includes teams in three divisions: junior baseball (boys 13-15), senior baseball (boys 16-18) and senior softball (girls 13-18). Baseball tryouts are scheduled for May 2, 9 and 16, and softball tryouts are scheduled for May 9 and 16. In 2014, nearly 300 youth baseball and softball players participated in the Astros RBI program. The senior boys' baseball and senior girls' softball teams were Southwest Regional champions, and both went on to play in the MLB RBI World Series.
